North (+st kilda, melbourne, bulldogs) should just move to the VFL. Clubs are still there for their fans, and Tasmania can have a team of its own.

They’re being selective when they say they’re about growing the game and need to focus on faster expanding markets like GWS and the GC whilst continuing to carry clubs. It’s bizarre that clubs like North carry on at the expense of a side being introduced from Tassie. Tells you a lot about the influential, self serving forces in Australian football. It really is a boy’s club.

It's not like Gil or the A(V)FL actually gives a shit about North (/Saints/Bulldogs/Melbourne). They are only kept around so the Vic clubs have the numbers. Or more accurately the big Vic clubs. North and the others get an occasional bone (umpired to a flag *cough*), but otherwise they know their job is to shut up and letCollingwood, Essendon and co. get everything they want and don't complain or they'll be left to fund themselves (and soon go under).

A North relocated to Tasmania would be better than North in Vic. Over time they'd stop reflexively supporting all the measures that only help the clubs in Victoria. North going under and getting a Tassie side instead, leaving fairness and Tassie supporters not getting the dregs of Victoria, would immediately have another not in the 'Victoria is the CenTRe of the Sporting UniVErsE!!!' camp though, no waiting years. Even at 9 clubs in and 9 clubs out of Victoria, you've removed the 'well it helps more than half the clubs in the league' argument every shitty leg up the Vic clubs currently keep getting.

AFL creates '18 Collingwoods' telling clubs to back end contracts


Irate AFL clubs have warned there will be “18 Collingwoods” forced into back-ending contracts to get under the reduced salary cap next year.

Clubs are angry the league has palmed off applying the cut to the salary cap to the clubs and the league’s best answer for getting under the cap was to back end contracts.

The AFL has mandated the total player payments and additional services agreement for next year will be cut by 9 per cent, while the players will take a 3.5 per cent pay cut on average.

List sizes have been cut by two players, which means the reduced salary cap is slightly spread across fewer players.
The AFL has not applied a flat across the board percentage cut to player salaries next year but instead passed it back to clubs to renegotiate player contracts.

Nah, they earn & spend about 30% less than every other club. If they put what we put into our footy department they'd be running $5m losses every year.

Tasmania has dramatically drawn a line in the sand and threatened to abandon its push for a stand-alone team unless AFL chiefs commit to a “pathway”. The taskforce behind a bid for a Tasmanian team is losing patience with the league’s indifference and warned the state will soon begin redirecting funds and energy into basketball.

Taskforce chair Brett Godfrey, who has held talks in recent weeks with AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan, told News Corp: “If there is no committed pathway to a team then the Government probably needs to review its entire sports tourism strategy and consider if and where the AFL sits within that plan.”

Godfrey says football in Tasmania, one of Australian rules founding states, is facing “death by irrelevance”.

Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein said the Government remained 100 per cent committed to obtaining an AFL team, but did not specify between a new or existing licence.

“This week I wrote to AFL CEO Gill McLachlan to progress the conversation regarding a Tasmanian AFL licence and the work of the Tasmanian AFL taskforce,” Gutwein said. “The Tasmanian Government is a tremendous supporter of AFL content in the State and welcomes ongoing discussions with the AFL on a transitional pathway to our own licence and a Tasmanian team.”

The AFL Taskforce has made a number of recommendations to the Tasmanian Government as it believes it has hit a dead end in the quest to finally land the state its own AFL team. The Taskforce also believes the code will no longer be Tasmania’s favourite sport within a decade without an AFL team.

Hawthorn and North Melbourne receive a combined $8 million a year from the Tasmanian Government to play four home games a season in Launceston and Hobart respectively.

Hawks boss Jeff Kennett told News Corp his club had joined Tasmania’s aspirations for its own team but believed the COVID crisis meant the league could not sustain a 19th team for “four or five years”
