Who, fresh out of UNI, desperate for a job in the AFL industry, with very little other prospects, wouldn't jump at the chance at doing 10 hours a week for free at an AFL club? You'd be doing the sh*t kicker stuff, but there is nothing, and I mean nothing like hands on experience. When these jobs open back up to paid roles, who do you reckon has their foot in the door with both experience and contacts? In the mean time it isn't stopping you from exploring other paid positions, doing further studies or earning income from waiting tables. Sometimes you have to look beyond your narrow Marxist ideologies.
I woulda put in for ports video internship years back if I were local but it was only 1 to 2 days a week.

Charlie Dixon doesn't take enough Marx for a key forward.
Maybe he needs to wait on tables or we delist him?

If it is linked to a university course, and is required in order to complete their degree - then there is no issue. However I wouldn't expect that to go for more than about 8 weeks per individual.

Nor would I expect it to be an advertised position if it was linked to a course.
It would be negotiated directly with the relevant uni, like RMIT.

Which makes Melbourne's comments seem odd.

Volunteering, Work Experience, and Internships are all different things with different rules around them.

Internships are usually at the specialised skills end of the spectrum, volunteering is at the other end.

This role was not an unskilled position allowing some young untrained person to get experience and help the club, it was aimed at young graduates with a base knowledge of the specialised area to act as support for their sports science team.

They’re doing two things; being cheap to save $$ and circumventing the football dept cap. Both of which they should be challenged on.

That's the idea, make him bigger and slower for beefcake shots.

Tredders reckons part of the penny might have dropped regarding Fog's need to change his attitude/professionalism, and that's a massive tick for him.

I employed undergrads in my company over the Uni break, in a scientific field.
They got paid.
They started as novices and finished as people who could make a contribution, albeit in a narrow area of endeavour.
It was mutually beneficial and deserving of recompense.
Word gets around.
If your company treats even beginners with respect, you find that the best in their field pick up on it, and will seriously consider working for you. And those beginners you hired as undergrads become winners - who remember.

Ah well
You can tell Tredders wants to keep his Fiveaa gig

Looks like the sort of place you'd go to get pingas.
I was there at the auction...no idea it was his until I saw his club champion poster stashed away..then Tex rocked up and was on the phone to brad letting him know the bids

This is just the modern world of work unfortunately. Supply of labour outstrips demand by a long, long way in most jobs and industries, the workforce is increasingly educated with more and more people looking for skilled work but less and less people finding it, the obvious thing for big companies to do is to take advantage of this situation and get people working for free just to get a foot in the door.

Late stage capitalism.
Welcome to techno-feudalism
