The Commonwealth games affects the first few rounds only. GC had a home game in Cairns. They just needed it scheduled 4 or 5 away games otherwise early season, compensated by more home games later in the season. Still with GC not expected to do well, the easy money isn’t a bad decision, if it gets them self-sustaining earlier then otherwise.
Check the time lapse in the video here.

There's a fair amount of work gone into constructing the athletics track. Whilst the Games finish at round 4, there will be a number of week's work to re-factor the ground for footy. I believe they were told that they'd get it back anywhere between rounds 8 and 11. With the Shangjai gane locked in un rd 9 and then a bye....round 11 it is.

Just came across the video of Ablett's hammy. He twinged it at 3.22 of the last quarter. At the time Geelong were 7 points ahead and went to 15 points ahead after a further 9 minutes. Then three minutes later West Coast started their run of 6 goals that saw them 21 up before Tom Hawkins reduced the margin to 15 with a late goal. Ablett had 26 disposals up to when he left and while it is questionable whether his presence would have stopped the rush of goals, his absence and loss of a rotation certainly didn't help.
Going by age and injury looks like Dangerfield and Selwood should still have 4-6 years and Ablett 2. I think Geelong will try to keep Ablett as long as they can due to his popularity, maybe to their detriment. If players like Mitch Duncan, Sam Menegola and Tim Kelly can lift up to the next tier then Geelong may not take a big dive when these players retire.

Video review should only be used for possible hitting the post as that is one time the goal umpire can be confused by what they see despite perfect positioning, like the 09 Grand Final.

Hitting the post should be play on (if it goes through even better).

I personally agree this is how it should have always been. But I don’t think you can so fundamentally change an aspect of the game as it’s stood for 150 years. This isn’t tinkering around the edges like removing the bounce, this changes a lot.

Personally would have thought theyd just use the Gabba whilst Brisbane are away.

They're doing that for the round 8 game against Malbun, so I don't know why they couldn't have done the same this week. Freo's offer to 'help out', and the $1.2m that went with it, must have swayed their AFL overlords' thinking - even their pockets aren't totally bottomless.

Gold Coast need the money so fair enough it they’re getting payed that much.

There's no Brissy Gabba games over the duration of the commgames is there. Some QLD legislation prohibits other major events over the duration of the games IIRC no matter where in QLD.

RECORD-BREAKING crowds for Gold Coast's "home" game in Perth and Sunday's Richmond-Hawthorn clash at the MCG have delivered the AFL its second-biggest single round attendance of all time.

The Suns drew 33,388 spectators to their clash with Fremantle at Optus Stadium, a game the club had to sell as a home fixture with Metricon Stadium hosting the Commonwealth Games.

It was their biggest home crowd, surpassing their previous mark of 27,914 at their clash with Carlton in round two, 2011, at the Gabba, when Metricon wasn't ready to host games.

A bit misleading i would think.

Only twice in the last 12 years have Geelong had a 1-2 start after three rounds. One of them they didn't make finals and one they were knocked out in the elimination final.
And to use a Rex Huntism, the Cats were a bee's diaphragm away from being 0-3.

Meanwhile, we draw 36K on a hot Saturday afternoon against the likes of Brisbane, and people think we're a bee's dick away from being wound up and rebranded as the Southern Power.

Two people have already commented about our crowd size to me at work today.

Both of which "support" the Crows and haven't attended a game for at least a decade.

Why preach to someone that attends 11 games a year. I just don't understand the fascination.

Should we beat Essendon in a convincing win (meaning more so how we play then the actual score) Friday night against The cats should be a massive crowd 50K plus and a win putting us 5 from 5 would be very nice

If it's less than 47k I'll slit my wrists.

Honestly who gives a ****?

Crows' supporters apparently.

They're fascinated by our sponsorship situation too.

Ah yes, that rings a bell - Brissy are away again in R4 and the Games finish that weekend. The next weekend is the 'Q Clash' at the Gabba (Loins home game). Suns don't get a game at Metricon until R11 though because of the remedial work required after the Games. They would have been there for R9, but apparently they've been 'Shanghaied' :D

A little.... just thinking out loud, and a bit of wishful thinking.

Should pull a few extra people and build a bit more atmosphere.
Tough ask for us at Etihad this week, need a good showing, all our seats are sold at Adelaide Oval - there is a waiting list, just we have crap fixturing, the fri night game will be 50ish
