No point getting a priority pick if you can't retain them. Addressing the symptom not the cause etc...
Don't worry, at some point the AFL will increase their concessions. GWS, GC, the Academies already they and Sydney have access to. Much easier then addressing player retention.

How about scrap all bonuses, like Academies etc. and just make it -
1. Players drafted to a club outside their state are on a 3 year first contract.
2. All players, at all clubs have 5% less of their salary count towards the cap each year (100%, 95% second year etc), down to 75%. It'd make it easier for all clubs to prevent player raiding.

I like how he singled out Polec and Port, when of the 5 players Polec/Port traded with Brisbane, with the most fairness of them all. o_O
The latest was Aish(picked at 7) traded for 26 and 2016 second-round. This trade was done last year.
Patrick Karnezis(drafted by Brisbane at 25) was a straight swap for Jackson Paine who Collingwood selected at 50. He was delisted by Brisbane and rookied this year.
Elliot Yeo was selected at 30 and traded to West Coast for pick 28.
Billy Longer was selected at 18 and traded to St Kilda with pick 48 for picks 25 and 41.
Sam Docherty was picked at 12 and traded to Carlton for pick 33. That was probably the trade where Brisbane were taken advantage of more than any other.
Jared Polec was traded to us in a 3-way that saw picks 45 and 21 and Polec come to us while Brisbane ended up with picks 14 and 34.

Ben Keays and whoever they get around the same this year will have to be pretty good for them to come out on top in losing James Aish.
Doesn't appear there's any winner or loser with Karnezis/Paine as Karnezis has retired.
Brisbane drafted Lewis Taylor with the 28 they got for Yeo. He has played 44 while Yeo has played 51 for West Coast.
Billy Longer played 9 games in two years at Brisbane, after being traded to St Kilda he played 34 AFL games in two years, he has played some VFL this year but has also been out with concussion.
Sam Docherty was at Brisbane for two seasons, he was injured for the first, played 13 games for the second and requested a move back after that.

I agree, Andre. Of those trades the Port one at least gave them some return. The Karnezis one was unfair, karma got Collingwood on that one. Unfortunately, Collingwood look like they may be winners on the Aish trade. Yeo was pretty fair and probably more than West Coast needed to give for a 2nd-round pick from two years ago. The St Kilda trade probably wasn't the fairest but it's difficult when they've named a club. The Docherty trade makes me hope Carlton never get out of their deserved spot in the bottom four.

The AFL stood by while Brisbane mismanaged themselves for years, I've listed a whole bunch of it in the Michael Voss thread, but there's more than that.

Sad thing is they already had one `you are getting everything wrong' off field reworking under Reidy a few years ago, but it obviously didn't take.

1. Victorian clubs would love this, because it'll dissuade non-Victorian clubs from drafting the ~50% of the draft pool that Victoria produces every year.

2. It also inhibits freedom of movement more than is currently the case. There are valid reasons for players to want to change clubs, and a 25% forced paycut makes it a bad financial option. And that carries over to clubs, who will find their players say they're happy to stay but play shithouse, like a lot of players on long contracts seem to do lately.

Chad has had 62 scoring shots this year.
Cyril has had 51 scoring shots this year.
Pick the 2016 All Australian.
Cyril has been more damaging this season. Wingard kept racking up goals, but at no point did he really explode and rip apart games this year. He's been off all year regardless of the final goal tally, while Rioli has been simply sensational at times. There's certainly no shame to him being excluded for Cyril this year.

Yeah. But swap Chad into Hawthorn's team and Cyril into Port's and I know who comes out on top then.

Cyril winning the Norm Smith off the back of a 18 disposal, 2 goal, 2 tackle game shows that there is absolutely no objectivity in the AFL's eyes when it comes to him.
Yeah but Cyril put the damage on the score board in the first when it mattered. It was a big contribution.

Yeah, he was dangerous, but so were 10 or 12 other Hawks.

Seriously, he kicked 2 of his team's 5 first quarter goals then did not a huge amount for the rest of the game. There were several other players more deserving, even Gaff in a badly beaten side had more of a claim IMO.

If having one pretty good quarter in a thrashing is enough to win a Normy, then I'm putting my house down on a tie between Westhoff and Hartlett if we ever make the GF.

I pretty much agree, but saw that first quarter and Cyril particularly in direct contrast to the '14 Prelim...

Where Cyril puts Chad to shame is defensive pressure... Cyril 105 tackles to Chad's 39. Chad certainly could work harder on his defensive game.
These numbers surprise me, I love the way Chad disrupts the ball when he tackles. Maybe it's to do with the finger. Awesome player, even in a down year his return is first rate.

And chad had 9 tackles in rnd 1. That's 30 in his other 18 odd games. Or 3 tackles a game less than waite has been averaging this season.

Tim Watson should really not be presenting Essendon news in the sports report. He can barely contain his boner over the Hurley deal.

How embarrassment.

Just wait until they force Jobe to hand his Brownlow back... Oh wait, are they still waiting and hoping this subject will get washed under the carpet.
Why hasn't anyone brought this up again?

Gotta feel for them. I wouldn't be surprised if a few at our club suffer the same.

"I've seen a few teammates over the years before games just constantly throwing up and I never understood and I just thought `oh that's just nerves and whatever else'," Deledio said.

"But you ask a few more questions and they are really anxious about what's going to happen and how they are going to perform.

"Some of these guys were extremely consistent performers but I think every player battles with nerves and little demons. I know I do at times."
