This from Tuck inquest - from the Age- "The AFL’s chief medical officer has revealed he is considering introducing mandatory helmets and special high-tech mouthguards, as the league grapples with how best to reduce the risks of concussion and brain trauma at junior, community and AFL levels."

He said a standard AFL helmet could be introduced as early as 2024.

Dr Michael Makdissi, speaking for almost three hours under oath at the inquest of former AFL footballer Shane Tuck at the Victorian Coroners Court on Friday, said limiting the number of tackles at training was also a strong consideration.

This will of course re-ignite the discussion/debate over the effectiveness of helmets in reducing brain concussion in a high velocity, high impact game of Aussie Rules at the elite/professional level of AFL.

Nothing learned from the US then, where helmets / padding have just made everyone willing to throw themselves in, assuming they are protected. Improved mouthguards are fine, but really the AFL needs to start penalising players who duck their head harshly. They could start with a big mea culpa, saying they were wrong to reward Selwood for it and if he had started today, then he'd get hundreds less frees. Whilst I'm waiting for the AFL to do that, I'll continue selling shares in this wonderful bridge.
