Could we see top-end players with long contracts traded without their consent? It is something the AFL is weighing up, according to new CEO Andrew Dillon.

And Kane Cornes believes he has the perfect example of a player and club where this could work. Dillon, speaking to AFL Media, revealed clubs are keen for a method that allows them to trade players without consent, but says it would come with heavy parameters. “When we’ve been in discussions with clubs, it’s always about ‘can you balance the economics of how trades work’ and we look at less like trading without consent and more that clubs can lead trades,” Dillon said.

“Now, it’s one that the AFLPA has pushed back on and what we’re looking at is whether we can add another alternative form for players to move around and if it was going to happen, I think there would be tight parameters around it – as in, players would have to have a long period of time on their contract, they’d have to be over a certain amount earning – all those sorts of things and we’ll have discussions with the AFLPA about it, but it is something that has been on the clubs’ horizons for a while.”

Cornes sees Carlton spearhead Harry McKay, who the Blues re-signed until 2030 last year, as a player who could be moved in this scenario. “The prospect of trading contracted players is clearly on the agenda of the AFL,” Cornes told SEN's Sportsday. “Get ready for a club to be able to say ‘this player has three years left on his contract, but he doesn’t really fit into what we are doing, we want to trade him without his consent provided there is a club willing to pick up his contract.” “The best example that I can think of a current player that might work for both is Harry McKay. “If Carlton are tight with their salary cap, and ‘yes we want to keep Tom De Koning … and we think we have our key position pillars, but we’ve signed McKay until 2030, but Sydney is willing to pick up the contract, give us the right compensation for it, it frees up some salary cap room and gets us back into the early stages of the draft’ – I think (this method of trading) works.

It’s should be the other way around.
Teams should be able to trade players coming to the end of their contracts not those who have shown loyalty.

Teams coming off the bye are 0-9 with an average losing margin of 55.8 pts!
Yeah but if you take West Coast out of it it's probably only about 20 points.

Like probably many others I checked the brisvegas v tiggers scores during ad breaks in the cricket, but only bothered once or twice after half time given the state of the game, and the absolute ineptitude of Richmond, and I wasn't aware of the final score until this morning.

For someone with no skin in the game watching something like that is less entertaining than waiting for cement to harden.

Lots of trash Thursday, Friday, Saturday night games this year. One Friday night I turned the telly on and it was Melbourne v north, what trash, I don’t think even Melbourne supporters would watch that rubbish

It's definitely a trend, regardless of the WCE (and Richmond) inflated average margin. There's potentially five more such games this round - if the trend continues I wonder if the AFL will consider fixturing teams only against teams who've also had the bye in future.

Who am I kidding?

The maga scores being racked up against the West Coast Eagles is going to play a big role in determining who wins the Coleman medal this year (and AA selection as well).

Forwards from teams that play the Eagles twice are going to have a huge leg up.

Walker (Crows) Larkey (North) and Curnow (Carlton) are all going to have a second bite at the WCE cherry in coming weeks:

Hopefully the AA selectors see that anomaly and don't select the key forward position solely on the back of the Coleman winner.

Also interesting that the clear top 4 teams (Collingwood, Port, Lions and Melbourne) don't have a forward sitting near the top of the leaderboard - demonstrating (in my view) the importance of a strong midfield and forward set up over a power forward in the 6-6-6 era.

I just checked the crows board to see if Borlase was getting a game this week (no) and found this gem, asking crows players to explain the origin of their goal kicking celebrations, cringe

OMG, they actually do the after goal song thing. Haha, how sad.

In Brisbane it makes sense, they don't know footy, but geez even I gave the Crows fans more credit than that. If that tradition started here, we'd be petitioning for them to stop with the songs. Are their fans doing the same?

Appears I was horribly wrong....
Shouldn't ever happen in SA where we actually create a passionate atmosphere Vs their (Brisbane) theatre going attendees.

Really open this year as the form of contenders ,apart fron us and the woods, has really fluctuated. Timing your peak is going to be critical.

This is far more important than finishing top 2. Reinforcing and tinkering with structure and gameday tactics far outweigh putting it all on the line this early for the sake of a home final. Solidify and reach your peak as a unit closer to finals and you can overcome anything.

Imagine caring about AA selections. Seriously, what's even the point of it?

I hate it when other clubs do it, whether I care about the club or not, it annoys the hell out of me when I watch games on tv. If Port ever even think about doing it,…….😡😡😡😡
