They received zillions in public funding towards their facilities for women’s sport, canned the netball team, and are now gleefully showcasing all the extra space the core business has.

I saw this first tweet yesterday morning and then saw Collingwood were trending a couple of hours ago all over this video.

Collingwood footed the bill for its recent renovations in covering up the netball court. While the grant remains a talking point on social media, Kane Cornes believes the true error was made in the Magpies’ response to criticism.

At least one comment was hidden by the club, with the user saying: “RIP our netball team.” A number of users also claim to have been blocked.

Hundreds of other comments and quote tweets call out the club for its use of the grant money, with many calling for tax payers to be refunded.

“The controversial part of this is that the (initial) upgrade was partially built by a $15 million government grant… but Collingwood’s reaction to this was where the error was,” Cornes said on SEN Breakfast.

“I don’t reckon Collingwood needs $15 million of taxpayer funded money and I get the backlash behind that… but then Collingwood started blocking people as far as I could see on Twitter and hiding a reply.”

The Magpies’ AFLW team can still make use of the indoor pitch, as could their wheelchair team.

Collingwood in the 2023 financial year reported a $7.56 million profit. But in May, Kelly made the “incredibly difficult” announcement that the netball program was not sustainable.

I mean, he kinda isn't wrong. We all knew women's sport was being used as a cover to get government grants to pay for facility upgrades. The community grant program by the government was a prime example of everyone getting on board with this.
We even had people of this board mention how much we were missing out on by not having a women's team to get this level of funding for upgrades.

There mistake is bragging about it. We all knew the rort, they have just spoken it out loud.

Seems a bit different. Getting $15m on the basis of supporting women’s sport and using netball as a leverage, upgrade the court and then kick netball out to use the space for football is as cynical as it gets. Nobody else had done this and it is a rort.

The money MUST be refunded.

In 2024 I support Port as it existed in 2011. I know its unlikely they build a time travel device, travel to the present, somehow get entry to the AFL and win the flag, but its the only outcome I'd be happy with.
