Maybr they mean blue dye? Or the concept of blue, which is a product of human consciousness (there are cultures without the word blue, who can't tell the difference between blue and green things that we can easily discern for example. I don't think Homer uses the word blue in either the iliad or the odyssey, even when describing the sky or the ocean)?

It was the last of the main colours to be named. For most people the only blue thing in their lives was the sky. So they didn't need to have a name for the colour of it to describe anything else

Before that it was really mostly greens and yellows. Occasionally reds.

It is actually true, the Greeks for example didn't recognise it. The development for words for colours in language has an almost pre defined path.

The word ao in Japanese is another more recent example, it means green AND blue. Hence blue traffic lights in some parts of Japan.
