Travelling on a plane for a couple of extra hours has to be one of the most overrated 'disadvantages' in sport. West Coast are the most successful non Victorian team in the comp (although Brisbane equaled them this year), certainly doesn't seem to have stopped them winning flags regularly.

Its not the 2 extra hours - its the accumulation of extra hours over 10, 12 even 15 years.

There is a reason why there are only 3 WA based players who have played 300+ games in 30 odd seasons, and why so many others on the east coast who do a few 1 or 2 hour flights a year, have achieved the milestone.

Fremantle have 2 players in the top 22 for most games played in the history of the comp. Their number of 300 gamers is the same as Port in a similar time frame.

The Eagles only having 1 with 10 more years is a slight anomaly but I wouldn't call that rock solid evidence that the travel is a huge burden, especially when most of the players from one of their great eras were cooked by drug use.

GREATER Western Sydney has delisted three players, including two who were penalised for their actions at the club's end-of-season function in September. Josh Fahey, Lachie Keeffe and Jacob Wehr have all been cut from the Giants' primary list but the club intends to re-draft all three at November's Telstra AFL Rookie Draft, to free up list spots to be filled at the national draft.

I liked Fahey in his draft year. Has a cannon for a left leg.

Wish clubs would poach more players when these types of delistings happen. Plenty of clubs could use Jack Gunston.

Politically its kind of a smart move for the kangas

if everytime theres a shit sandwitch to be eaten they eat it for the AFL, gives a reason for the AFL to keep them around.

lets the AFL throw the 2 WA clubs a bone.

a very small one but if the WA clubs push for more the AFL can point to it and fob them off as "Hey we're trying over here"
It’s the only time North Melbourne will play in front of a decent crowd!

Nah, I can’t see how say 48 hours PER YEAR more than the SA teams in first and business class spread over 6 months on a plane will have an affect that great.

American sports stars do more, play more games AND have longer careers.

More likely the drug taking and whoring.

Melbourne footballer Joel Smith has been slapped with a career-ending four-year ban for cocaine use and trafficking.
Smith, 28, tested positive to cocaine following a match at the MCG in August 2023.He was later hit with additional drug trafficking charges by Sport Integrity Australia investigators.
The huge ban is expected to be announced by the AFL and SIA on Friday.
At least four of Smith’s Melbourne teammates have been sweating on the outcome of the trafficking probe.
A text message from Smith uncovered by SIA – in which he told them he had obtained several grams of cocaine and asked if they were interested – is understood to have been sent to a group of star Demons players.
The Smith camp was initially hoping for a suspension of just three months before the trafficking allegations surfaced.
Smith had the option to contest his case at the AFL anti-doping tribunal but his father, former Melbourne high-flyer Shaun Smith, believed he was being pressured to stay silent and take the fall in a bid to contain a bigger scandal.
“It feels like my son is being manipulated into being the fall guy here, in order to protect the AFL brand,” Smith said in April. “He’s being made a scapegoat, and I’m really worried for him.”

NFL seasons are not that long, Basketball & Baseball are irrelevant it's cricket level fitness.

Might be time to stop calling it the rookie list.

I wonder when this just gets extended to 20 blokes on 40k a year and effectively becomes a top up player list under the AFL cap.
