Worth noting that at least Adelaide and St Kilda have made GFs in the past 20 years.
Also worth noting that we have too, and freo.

Not that anything other than a premiership really matters. The lack of GF's let alone premierships makes Hinkley's record look even more hideous but in hindsight had we made the 2021 or 2024 GF's we probably would've got absolutely smashed and perhaps losing the prelim was the lesser of two evils. 2014 and 2020 were the golden opportunities.

When we finally get to our next GF, we have to win the bloody thing.

Yep sorry I meant 17 years (ie since we last made it)

Agree with most of your post, although I still say we would have lost the GF in 2020.

Was reminded of the uniqueness of Aussie Footy about 10 minutes ago watching the wildcard finals game in NFL between 6th Washington and 3rd Tampa Bay.

With 3 seconds to go Washington get a field goal attempt to break a 20 all dead lock and their first finals win since 2005. Field goal attempt was from 25 yards out and not a great kick,. Kicker almost aimed for the right goal post and it hit the inside of the post and went thru for a goal and Washington win the game and progress to play 1st seed Detroit.

A decent chunk of Aussie Footy fans want something similiar and the rules to change. But our game you get a score for missing. So until that changes, you hit the post, you get a behind. Bad luck if the ball goes off inside of the post and thru the goals.

The rule gave me so much pleasure when Siciliy hit the post in the SF. Cant remember if it was on the inside or outside of the post.

Just lucky the Hocs didn't play as phenomenally well as Sydney did the following week.

How unlucky were we that the Swannies were such an unstoppable force in the PF but played like sh!t in the GF?

We woulda smashed Brizvegas had we not been unlucky :roflv1:

Welcome to the paying for it part of the 'let's all make ourselves feel good by pushing for a Tasmanian team in the AFL despite there being no economic case for it' movement.

We don't need more teams, we need less.
4 VIC teams need to go. Everyone can work out who they are.

Yeah, that’s the frustrating thing.

The Swans were eminently gettable, just as they had been in the 8 previous games against them since 2016.

It’s just our approach to finals football under Hinkley is doomed to fail, and a mediocre Swans outfit were able to cruise into the Grand Final with what was maybe a 6-out-of-10 performance.

Meanwhile Koch is talking like we ran into the Harlem Globetrotters, Richo is boasting “don’t let anyone tell you we didn’t have a good year”, Hinkley scuttles beneath his win%, and the players continue to believe they’re just unlucky.

It is still amazing to think we played Sydney in round 21 and won by 112 points then just over a month later played them and lost by 36 points.

I cannot remember many turnarounds to that degree. I guess we beat Geelong at Kardinia Park late in the 2007 season before narrowly going down in the GF a few weeks later.

But as you said I don't think Sydney played particularly well in that Prelim but we never really felt a realistic chance of winning. We were down by less than 2 goals at quarter time but we didn't feel in it.

I've also been surprised ( I probably shouldn't be) how much the club seemed to talk up the Semi Final win over Hawthorn and essentially pretending the other finals didn't occur. By all means it was a good win against Hawthorn, but a home final win against a lower ranked side playing their first finals series since 2018 is hardly an achievement for the ages.

It rarely if ever happens to other teams, yet it happens to Hinkley's Port with unbelievable frequency.

2024:
Geelong vs Port Adelaide - 90 point turnaround (6 point win at Kardinia park in H&A followed by 84 point loss final at AO).
Sydney vs Port Adelaide - 148 point turnaround

2023:
GWS vs Port Adelaide - 74 point turnaround
Brisbane vs Port Adelaide - 102 point turnaround

2021:
Bulldogs vs Port Adelaide - 71 point turnaround

Even if you factor in our Hawthorn (2 points in our favour) and Geelong (64 points in our favour, with a sizeable asterisk given the illness in their camp to be fair) wins... we're on average a 60 point worse team in a final compared to a H&A game against the same team. Mindblowing stuff.

It was a good win, but it was all effort and no structure. We worked 10x as hard as them and blew up all our tickets and as a result almost lost in the end and got smashed one week later.

We were awful against Sydney in the prelim. It was a a very flat effort and not too dissimilar to the QF. It should've received much more criticism.

The Semi Final was a very good win though, many talk it down as not a good win because we beat 7th at home but the Hawks were absolutely running hot and most pre game didn't think we were a chance against them.

I've rewatched the entire game recently and it was a very entertaining, high pressure, a real finals intensity dog fight that ebbed and flowed all match. The most entertaining and highest standard game we played all year in my opinion.

i reckon the hawks probably would've beaten Sydney in the prelim. We couldn't back up the semi final effort, not even close, but the Hawks probably would've. It's what is the most frustrating is that we got up for one final because our backs were against the wall and we copped a week of deserved criticism but we then relaxed and it was job done despite a GF spot being up for grabs. It was bullshit and has supporters questioning the players motivation, surely there was more at stake than Daddy's job.

Conversely, i rewatched the second showdown from last year and live it seemed like a better game than it really was. I still think the crows style of footy turns games in to putrid eyesores but even the intensity of the game was nowhere near the Hawks semi final.

Stop it, don’t let facts tell you we haven’t been one of the most successful clubs of the last 5 years. Statistics can be manipulated to tell any story the party wants you to believe…

Don’t judge us on one game, judge us at the end of the year - but we sign contracts before the judging at end of the year, finals are scary, someone has to lose, don’t let anyone tell you we didn’t have a great season in 2024 - we played more games than 14 other clubs and our members love bang for their buck.
