Ah but you have to remember hawkk Richmond are a small club as you say yourself. I looked at what happens when a huge mega drawing giant like Hawthorn plays the Dogs at home whilst happening to be basemant and discovered that you "struggled" to draw 24,000 not long ago....embarrasingly thousands smaller than little old Richmond.

Of course that was in he years BF (Before Flag) so obviously any figures from such years are irrelevant aren't they?

When was this?

The point the deluded poster made was that our membership numbers weren't valid based on our crowd drawing capacity, far from it in fact

Whether or not that number is sustainable isn't the question, right here and now the numbers stack up very strongly considering the circumstances

Hawks have won premierships,Richmond haven't.

Huge difference there mate.

For us to have over 40k members with the shite our supporters have been served up,I'll borrow a term from the VB add,it's a minor miracle.

And that 27k was an Easter Sunday game.

40k members with nothing to cheer about.

That says it all.

Hawthorn were picked to be top 4 so the feathered bandwagonners stayed on the train.

Our numbers have actually been getting larger despite our on field plight, far from fairweather...

Richmond numbers are exceptional no question but using the same argument as grin, your numbers are just as rubbery as ours

The institution of 3 game and other cheap options means that membership of an AFL club can now be bought for the less than price of a few drinks a pizza and a taxi home. It is relatively speaking dirt cheap.

Let the clubs raise money however they like and if the AFL wants some ticket attacjed than just attach a ticket to buy a big headlin figure as everyone else does and Richmond are now doing. However membership numbers now mean little or nothing.

our 3 game ones were $70-80 last time i looked. not that cheap. not that it matters, if you give money to your football club you are a member and a supporter regardless of whether you go to games or not.

I'd expect Essendon, Carlton and Richmond to comfortably surpass Hawthorn, and close in on Collingwood once they begin performing, or rather, if they begin performing

You'd expect it. I'd expect it and so would 99% of others. In fact the only surprising thing about Essendon's 40,000 is that it is not about 5,000 higher. Frankly I'd say the same about Carlton. Richmond's 40,000 is unbelievable in the circumstances.

Hawthorn's creative and number chasing sales strategy recently has broken new ground in how memberships are marketed but it doesn't create support from nowhere. Once any of the 3 you mention fire, IF they do, they will comfortably sell 50,000 and more. The relatively small attendance today for Collingwood in 2nd on 5 and 1 coming off huge high profile wins V Essendon and Carlton shows that big though they are - and I don't deny that they are probably the biggest - they are not a different magnitude to the rest of the Big 4 all of shom could be on 55,000 plus if in the Pies position.

EFC: 40,013 as at 8 May 2010

And thats as high as it will get for the next 3 years with Knights as coach. The morale of the supporter base will/has hit rock bottom this year. Everything is coming to ahead, the realisation this club is as far from a flag as it was when the bottom 4 finishes started in 2005 and being lead by a man who the supporters have no faith in or affinity with at all

The club as whole is just at a complete polar opposite to Collingwood atm.

Take your half a decade Dave, multiply it by six, add in a series of eye wateringly poor decisions, self inflicted wounds, bizarre own goals and all round incompetence and then you have what its like for us Tiges.

I actually think you are being overly gloomy. You are a chance for the eight this year IMO.

The more i read about 3 and 5 game memberships the more i wonder about every clubs figures and how much they are smudged.

Its intresting to note that in 2007 Essendon had the most supporters in victoria yet they dont seem to be able to capture Collingwood or Hawthorns type numbers. Is this because of the team atm or becuase of small game memberships clouding figures.

I would have thought that membership numbers are almost useless and that gate receipts would be a much better figure for establishing supporter numbers.

Several things influence membership numbers.

1. Form. How well is a club doing onfield. Top 8 the previous year or number of years will boost attendances. Bottom 8 will push them down.

2. Expectation. How do fans expect a team to do. Signings, hype etc play into this.

3. Marketing creativity. How inventive and creative are the marketing people in maximising the audited figure.

In recent year essendon has not had great form, hasn't excited much expectation and has slipped behind in marketing to boost numbers. The answer to your question is really that simple.

EFC: 29/05 - 40,498.

Been going up about 100 or so a week for roughly the last month. Will be interesting to see how the numbers change in the next month or so with the introduction of the 3-game membership.

LOL. Despite there supporters saying all clubs include the non-match day members. Probably shouldnt just single out Richmond, is there any other clubs that Memberships figures have dropped? I know Geelong always report there match day members so ours hasn't changed.

These are the figures that count!

Membership Ladder
Collingwood 57,408
Hawthorn 53,978
Adelaide 45,545
West Coast Eagles 44,160
Essendon 40,589
Carlton 40,480
Geelong Cats 40,326
Fremantle 39,854
St Kilda 39,021
Richmond 35,960
Melbourne 33,358
Western Bulldogs 32,077
Port Adelaide 29,092
Sydney Swans 28,671
North Melbourne 26,953
Brisbane Lions 26,779

Just Looking at the link. Shite, Hawks have a lot of Junior members!! 15,000!

Here are the total memberships, once the AFL cleaned them up and removed the bogus 'members' that some clubs use to inflate figures (e.g. 1 game members, non-ticketed members, etc.):

---
"Collingwood recorded a rise of almost 20 per cent, taking its total membership to 57,408 - a record for any club and making the Magpies only the third team behind Adelaide (2006 and 2007) and Hawthorn (2009 and 2010) to top 50,000 members in a season. St Kilda recorded the second largest increase of 18.23 per cent, while the Western Bulldogs also recorded double-digit growth."

Total Members Ladder, at 30/06/09:

Collingwood: 57,408

West Coast Eagles: 44,160

Increase Subi oval capacity FFS and west coast will easily get over 50,000 members, ive been trying to get one for years, but i refuse to sign up for this BS "In the Wings" waiting list. I emailed West Coast once and was told the people on this list are on average waiting over 5 years before a season membership becomes available.

Think of the numbers we could have given more seats.

Very impressed that the Tiges only fell away by 1000. Going into 09 we had all the Cuz build up, the "Locked and Loaded" bullshit from Wallace and a large amount of expectation.

Going into this year we had no hope, no future and were "worse than Fitzroy". And when your best effort in the first 8 weeks is a 41 point loss you aren't going to get many members.

And interesting to note that Richmond have the 3rd most junior members. Looks like our membership isn't dying out with the fans from the 60/70/80's.:thumbsu:

And Collingwood's numbers are unbelievable. Anybody know why there was such an increase? They've been hovering around the top 4 for a few years now. They don't have any emerging superstars. Have they introduced new memberships?

Not too surprising for a team that lost 10 out of 11 in the first half of the season. Do they count 3 game tickets? We brought them in not long before the cut off. If we can win another 3 out of the next 7 I'd reckon we'll take a 10K jump next year.

More interesting is Carlton going down despite finals last year and sitting in the top 6 at June 30. Fev factor?

Gee Collingwood are such a power, the popularity of the club continues to grow and they are simply the Manchester utd of AFL football.

See Hawthorns list of juniors, massive amount of young support, this will ensure the club only grows and prosper going forward. You could raise the argument that Hawthorn is now the 2nd strongest team in Victoria.

St Kilda are also growing, endured success and with genuine stars attracting support the club will soon push well above 40k mark.
