Roast Post your favourite opposition bitterness about our three-peat

Geelong are delusional. 3 in 5 years is better than 3 in 3 years because... blah blah blah....

Denial: "They haven't dominated the H&A season like we did for 5 years." "They only did it because of the shallow drafts due to GC/GWS" "Their opponents choked"
Anger: "They never should have won 2008 (or other final between HAW/GEE)" "The umpires are completely biased!" "Haven't beaten a Vic team in a GF! Playing opponents away is a huge advantage!"
Bargaining: "If we get Dangerfield we can challenge them this year" "OK, WCE/freo, we'll barrack for you if you can beat the hawks" "We'll give you our first pick for the next 15 years for Fyfe"

If they don't miraculously rise up the ladder this year, they will head on into depression and probably in another 5 years, they'll be back in the acceptance stage they were prior to 2006.

There were no statements to this effect on Geelong's run because Geelong's run was nowhere near as good as ours...

I'll make one. In 2007, there was no opposition. For Power to even make the Grand Final that year shows how poor the competition was. The Hawks were only on the way up at that stage, so Geelong helped themselves to an easy flag.

2009, they beat St.Kilda. Big deal, everyone beats St.Kilda, and it was courtesy of a shocking goal umpiring mistake.

2011, they defeated Collingwood, a club divided by coaching issues and belted the week before by us.

The only team they played during this time who was looking for a fight was Hawthorn, and the Cats failed to deliver.

The "greatest team of all" tag only came about because of words in their club song, and after awhile the media convinced a vast majority this was the case. The "period of dominance" was also a myth. The only period they "dominated" was from halfway through 2007 to the end of the minor round in 2008. Since that time, not one minor premiership. The media were still talking up Geelong's "dominance" as late as 2014 after they hadn't even played in a GF for 3 years or won a minor premiership for 6 seasons! "Is the Geelong era of dominance over?" they asked after the Hawks eliminated them from the finals for the second year in a row.

The Hawks have won three in a row. Not one in a row like Geelong, but THREE.
2013 - defeated the manic pressure of Fremantle, pressure that NO team could withstand
2014 - not only defeated, but destroyed the unbeatable Swans. Beating Sydney will never sit well with the AFL having such a huge investment in them.
2015 - crushed West Coast who were clearly not in Hawthorn's league.

Geelong's first flag was after 44 years so the AFL weren't to upset about that. They then defeated two other Victorian teams St.Kilda and Collingwood, so the AFL didn't care too much about that either.

But Hawthorn have defeated three non-Victorian teams, and it is crushing the AFL dream of clubs outside of Melbourne having their share of premiership success. We have been, and still are a far greater threat to the AFL ideal than Geelong ever were.

Wouldn't you just love to see a fourth flag in a row? :)

Can't argue with a single word of that.

The thing is, we could win 30 in a row, and the morons would still be saying 'Brisbane were better, they had to travel', and handbagger fans would desperately blather on about weak opponents, umpiring, home ground advantages and other such crap....

Very good post, but I just had to correct one part!

so Fitzpatrick agrees with big footy in that our victories are in some way illegitimate? You know, if a team doesn't bring their a game on the day the the premiership counts for less? **** them.

There's a quote from Lou Richards along the lines of "You're only as good as the other team allows". Great quote that more people should be paying attention to.

I agree that this would be the case for no other reason than bias and an unwillingness to accept the success of another rival club.

Whatever happened to doffing your hat and saying well done.....you were just too good for us?

Barely exists in this tall-poppy syndrome driven nation we have here.

Cat supporters should do well to note that back in 1991, it was Hawthorn who repelled the interstate infidel in their first attempt at a Grand Final. And the following year, it was the Geelong Football Club which rolled over and allowed the first non-Victorian challenger to prevail and steal the premiership cup away west.

Had a quick beer at my local yesterday & a particular Port Power supporter came up to me & said, "You won't win it next year."

I replied, "Do you remember that no more than 30 minutes after we'd won the premiership in 2013 you came up to me & said the same thing?"

He did, and surprisingly wasn't pleased that I had remembered too.

They love this one. They like to invoke the close PFs as if the opposition were dudded out of victory. Stevic is always invoked, too.

Some of my favourites are that the Hawks only won because they "picked the eyes out of free agency"
Losing Franklin benefited them so that's not fair and you can't count that as a free agent loss.
Only won as it was played at their home ground. Home ground is worth more than 40 points I guess.
If you want to see some real heck bag supporters you should check out "the roar" it's a WA based site and there is some seriously offended Fremantle and West coast supporters. Check out a special kind of tool named Don Freo. Absolute classic delusional supporter.
Hawks are only the default premiers as Freo actually beat the Hawks in the Prelim. Umpires cost Freo 6 goals in that 1 game.

I live in Perth and work with Don Freo and Allen Eagle and they drive me bonkers....want to move back to Melb but the misses won't . Finishing 3rd and knocking both WA teams out was a highlight

The home ground advantage bitterness is my favourite. How dare the GF be played at the highest capacity ground. Wonder what would have been blamed if Freo and the Eagles played off in the GF? Would they have roped off 10m on each side of the field?

Our 2008 squad would get near our 3-peat era boys. Our 2008 team beat Geelong at their absolute peak. Hate to think of the carnage this team would cause on the 21-1 Cats.

HI - forgive the intrusion. I have watched and admired your teams run with a sense of awe and envy. There's no luck about it. Shrewd management, great player development, wonderful culture. Everything every team should aspire to be.
I find it interesting that since the turn of the century there have been three "mini eras" all of super dominant teams.
I thought Brisbane were "lucky" in as much as they were the amalgamation of two teams and given a free ride by the AFL
I grew up in Geelong - barracking for another team. I loathe them more than is healthy. 2007 was a joke. 2008 was joy. 2009 they were lucky. 2011 they didn't beat my team. Mick Malthouse did. They are overrated always have been. Their recent draft acquisitions a case in point.
I've followed footy since the late 60s. I've never seen a team like yours.
Enjoy it. It won't last forever and if you do win 4 in a row - congratulations - but you'll forgive me if I barrack against it, given that 4 in a row thing is pretty close to my heart.

I've got a Carlton supporting mate who said the same thing to me last summer.

I wish he didn't move interstate for work. Would love to catch up with him for a drink.

Long may they continue to be wrong.
