Training Pre Season '24

I doubt he will play in front of Dow first up, is there going to be 5 on the bench this year. Preseason is a lot different to the real stuff, but yes he looks like he's got it, he's very aggressive which is a big tick. Speed as well is a great attribute.
Match sims and performances there in will decide who gets the call up. If McAuliffe shows more, he’ll play for sure imo. Agree with everything else you said

Shredded af
Yeah he’s always looked extremely lean but looks like he’s starting to pack on some kgs muscle wise

Like a lot of our young players this pre season he’s a real dark horse who could do **** all or play 15+ games and the fact that both wouldn’t be a shock

With a few more players in that same bracket it’s a really exciting season in that regard

Potentially but who knows
We have a few spots up for grabs and a few decent young kids fighting for a few spots
Only a good thing

If Kosi can be a 30 goal a year 2nd KPF crashing packs and chopping out in the ruck, then this trade is pure gold.

I am not saying he is a dasher, but in congestion, he's a quick as anyone.
I think he has quick reflexes in close but dont agree that he is quick on the run. The games I saw him play I never noticed him breaking clear from a pack with running but rather with handball. There is a place for it but Hopper , Graham, Tarranto are all similar. We need to see some speed out of the midfield. That is why we look dynamic when Bolton no only grabs the ball but in one or two strides is 5 metres away from the pack

Speed over a short distance is pretty important. Dusty and Cotch have/had good speed over a short distance which bought them time when they had the ball. I see Dow's speed a bit similar except that his lateral speed is through the roof, not quite Bolton but who is. If he can break 10m at speed then he has more time to distribute the ball, which he needs because so far his distribution has been lacking a bit of composure... not quite Taranto, but who is. I imagine he has concentrated on defensive running as well, because Taranto did to much of that last year, he needs help on the rebound. It think that is why his disposal was very average, buggered all the time.

Our midfield may not need Bolton and Martin there so much if Dow comes good. That ability to skip away is what we have been lacking in the middle. Prestia surprisingly had that skip, and the fact that you can't tackle him, but he has not had it over the last two season. Has had a good preseason apart from the last week or so so who knows.

Taranto, Prestia, Hopper, Dow around the ball. Taranto can rest forward with spells from Dusty and Bolton. Can't expect McAuliffe to pressuring this early in the season, he needs to play VFL and get himself ready for the next jump.
Sonsie is out for a few weeks and will probably have another or two in the VFL before he is considered, so we should have a good idea of the midfield 6-8 weeks in or so.
Taranto Prestia , Hopper Dow around the ball makes us Glacier slow. We need more zip not just in and under players

Add Bolton and Baker into the mix. And Graham is a running powerhouse.

Can't wait to see the match sim tomorrow.

Hope we get to see Sonsie, McAuliffe & Dow, with Naismith in the ruck together against the A team. With Fawcett & Bauer in the forward line.

Well I think I'm more excited to watch our VFL team this year, especially with all the inhouse experts telling us there is no room in the side for the youngsters yet. LOL

VFL team will be stacked.
they'll win the flag

Taranto can run all day both ways, inside and out. Yes slowish but always moving. Hopper I think will have a bit more zip than last year because he has a full preseason for the first time in a while. Prestia is the mystery, which one plays the old or new Prestia. The new is nowhere near the old, and slower. He had great zip around the ball at his peak. I don't think we can afford to play an average Prestia. But was high up in our 2km time trial, which suggests he has had a good preseason. They will 'manage' him from here on so let's hope the old Prestia comes back this season.

Dow is not slow at all, in fact due to his agility he can really spread away from the pack with good speed for short distances. That is what we need in there, and that is what many really good mids do. There aren't many Judd's and Dangerfield's out there who do it all at speed. Bolton and Dusty have plenty of zip as well, but more importantly they win a lot of clearances, as does Dow. This is where we have been weak. We have a strong midfield now (on paper) getting the ball, and need more speed and natural footballers on the outside. This is where we have been quite weak.

Mac and Pickett are good footballers but do not get much possession, and not a lot of breakaway possession. Banks, Sonsie, Brown, Smith, Clarke, MaAulife are pacy players who will get games this year possibly replacing them and add run and carry. Graham, Rioli, Short, Ross, Baker etc are also runners.

We looked static and very risk averse last year, far from our good years. Hopefully a bit of that comes back and makes us a bit more dynamic. We should also have far more structure up forward. When the ball comes out as easily as it did last year, every side would looks slow.

It’s been pretty bad. All clubs announced by mid-December and Richmond + Melbourne haven’t confirmed times yet with less than 20 days out
Apparently the clubs are arguing over which pokies venue too have it.
Dees want Oliver too at least attend in some form.

Not really. He's an inside mid with average endurance and poor foot skills. I'm not saying he can't be a good inside mid, but he'll never be a run and carry outside type midfielder.
This really stood out late in the year, but in fairness to the kid, he hasnt completed a single pre season yet and never gets a good run at it to build that base.

You can tell by his rig, the kid trains hard and does the right things, just needs a chance to build his tank and I am positive, with greater fitness will come better kicking.

I think that McAuliffe is going to really surprise many, especially in the media. From what I’ve read and seen in limited clips, he’s playing mid and right in the thick of the action in match sims.
I reckon he will play from game one, but will be rested at times. He’s just got it imo
Doubt he'll play much AFL this year, unless injuries :straining:

But I am hoping he'll start to play above VFL standard. If he does come on then our midfield going forward looks much better balanced.

Right now there are too many good players ahead of him.

Surprised to see Dow is just a younger version of Prestia stats wise.

Would be good to see Dow get more game time, his Disposal efficiency has improved the past 2 seasons even with very limited games.
Not even close. Take a look at them at the same age -
