My take on the match sim

We have a lot of decent young midfield kids

Forward looking ok.

Dusty good. Jack Ross good

Defence is going to be an issue even if we win midfield and kick a lot of goals other teams are going to be in the game because our defence is sloppy

I liked what I saw of Mate. He knows how to move the oppo ruck off their line at throw ins with his bulk and direct the ball our way. Did some clean gathers of ground balls and quick hands off to mids. There's definitely something there where I thought there was nothing.

Miller kicking out from goal, 56min mark, thinks about going long, but no chips to the RH pocket.. who eventually gets bundled over the line. Ball in. Classic Hardwick coaching over the last two years. Miller can launch it to the wing with nobody on him, but no I'll control the ball and go short. Hope that changes. I did noticed they looked both ways on a few occasions, which is something at least.

Watched the full replay. Here's my thoughts.

Martin had more mid time and looked like Dusty.
Baker wasn't as clean as usual, but got around it a lot in the mids and kicked a nice goal
Nank is the clear #1 ruck
Graham was solid, moving well, strong, clean, and played more mid than last couple years
Hopper was BoG by far. Very clean. Great lateral movement and strength.
Mansell was a very solid small forward option)
Dow was very good except for his goal kicking
Brown's clearly a smart player; just needs to get it more
Short's got the main distributor role locked up
Fawsett was a pleasant surprise. Has good size and pace; beat Gibcus comfortably
Ross - The wing is his
Naismith > Kosi or Balta. Balta is not a forward. Both him and Kosi were very poor
Sonsie played a HFF role with 2 goals; not bad, but didn't get much of it

Others either didn't stand out or I didn't notice them. Didn't notice Steely and McAuliffe as much as their stats show.

Pretty good summary.

I’d add:

Tresize was solid. Reminded me Vlastuin in that not necessarily flashy but reliable.

Colina hasn’t got great ruck craft but moves a lot better than I thought and for more involved around the ground (albeit still not a lot). Still and uphill battle but not as far away as often thought.

Steely did hunt the ball and man very well. Set up the reds first goal (Cumberland) with a good bit of play. A bit of Johnny on the spot but was quite good.

McAuliffe moved well and made some good decisions.

Ryan was okay; but needed to see more. Where he fits in with Naismith, Balta and Kosi will be interesting.

MRJ did some nice things but didn’t blow the game apart. Will also be interested to see the small forward depth chart. Sonsie was pretty good, Mansell very good. MRJ solid. Steely bobbed up and then you’ve got Coulthard, Clarke, Campbell and Cumberland.

Kaleb Smith was also okay. Played more of a defender than a running HBF type, but that may be because the smalls and mid forwards were dominant.

Ross was the best wing by a bit; especially as the wings weren’t really used. Banks was not as good but better than Pickett and KMac. Hopefully locking down the role.

Did Seth Campbell play? Didn’t really notice him.

Cumberland was not really involved. First goal and a handy tap to Steely and that was it.

Ralphsmith was much the same as you’d expect.

Hard to read cause it was so frantic and clearly defensively weren’t going 100%. But was impressed by some of the younger guys.
