Young was very good late in his first season , balta has shown plenty as a forward persist with him , he was ordinary as a back late last year had some bags kicked on him

People seem to forget Miller. Good AFL standard KPD, who we used to swing onto the big guys when needed. We have young proven AFL quality KPDs outside Balta. I still like Balta down back, but understand why we'd play him forward.

Miller and Young take the KPFs, Gibcus interceptor and distributor. Looks like a potential long term backline to me.

I keep saying it but Balta needs to play defence. Gibcus and Young aren't ready. Bring in Ryan or Bauer as forward support for Lynch/Kosi if we must have 3 talls please Adem.
Gibcus and Balta swap ends. Gibcus could easily play forward, he is such a natural marker, floating in from the side. You get that opportunity as a running tall forward reguarly, ask Royce or Richo. And he is a beautiful kick.

Can't judge to much on a scratchy, but Balta and Kosi had no connection. Lynch (or Balta until Lynch comes in) deep forward, Kosi and or Gibcus high forwards. Balta is our best tall back after all.

I’m calling it now, we make finals and Geelong don’t. Our players are looking super fit.

I know it was just match sim but I really hope our disposal cleans up quite a bit between now and the start of the season, otherwise we will be using our extra fitness to just chase the ball on turnovers.

I saw Balta try one his dinky little kicks and miss his target by 10 yards, he ain’t the answer up forward, and definitely Balta and Gibcus can switch

The move of Balta forward is probably less to do with it being Baltas best position and more to do with missing out on Cadman, Ben King, etc with Balta being the only real long term option post Lynch

Our team defence was woeful last season. Plus Balta was one of the best intercept defenders in the league.

Agree. Gibcus seems to have great footy smarts compared to Balta too, which you need playing KPF, more so than KPD.

I can't stop laughing at the negative nellys already cracking the sads on Jan 31st. New coach, new gameplan, first real hit out. "yeah hur dur, I gots bored etc etc" FO idiots. I guess you'll have nothing to say once the real stuff fires up. I'm only halfway through. Will watch the second half tonight.
Totally agree, a bit of player belief / trust and some minor skills improvement (+2%-5% in foot and hand accuracies), puts us well in the mix. We have the only Sexy Dust combo in finals games, a major advantage.

McAullife game sounds very encouraging - look forward to seeing what he can do this year. Crazy how physically developed he is - my whole body was probably the size of one of his forearms at 18. Kid must eat 15 weet-bix for every breakfast

Good reports of the match sim, I watched it but couldn’t make out a lot of the red team.
Interesting David Kings take on our game style, being longer kicking and less handball! Like to see if the stats back that up . Interesting call re Green being the next Baker !!
Appears
McAuliffe and Trezise were standouts (kids).
Great to see Gibcus get through, his form will be scratchy after missing so much football. Don’t expect too much from him early season

Maybe that was your problem, thinking Weet Bix promotes muscle mass

My biggest point of interest isn't really individual players performance but rather structures and game plan. I'm eager to see where players are being positioned and how 'teams' are being developed.

This is difficult to see without all the players, playing their normal roles. It was interesting to read Kingy's comment about how we are kicking longer and using less handballs. I didn't notice this. I thought we were playing in the very similar fashion to how we have in the past. Maybe Kingy has been at more trainings that me and observed this, but he could also just be putting 2 and 2 together and getting 67 (as he's prone to do).

I'm not a fan on bombing the ball into our F50, indiscriminately. I don't feel it helps the forwardline set up, find space or work off their opponents. Occasionally the tactic catches opposition defenders out of position but usually it just enables the defenders to easily anticipate the ball and intercept it, meaning it rebounds out as quickly as it went in.

Short kicks are too dangerous too. Dimma tried to employ the Hawthorn strategy to cut through zones previously but we just don't have the footskills in the squad to successfully achieve this. So it's handballing out of stoppages into space or nothing for mine. The strategy is now successfully used by multiple teams including the FlagPies  and our squad has been built/desined to play in that manner, so I hope we just build off that.

The players looked sharp in the IntraClub Game and I was heartened but how close the game was considering the Red Team was made up of aspiring youngsters.

I think we can expect a stronger 2024 than 2023 driven by Dusty, Lynch, Hopper and the growth of our youngsters. Don't write off our chances of a top 4 finish either. I think the gloom and doom are just wishful thinking of the media and opposition supporters.

They wouldn’t , we appeared to handball the fk out of it , circa 17-20 , keen to see how this goes against an oppo as we drifted from this style

Yeah not sure what King was watching because i thought we handpassed a lot, when kicking we did go long but we still handballed a fair bit imo.

would like to see Kick to Handball ratio but also long v short kicks.
