I went back to watch the match sim

1st half only

Yellow side had 32 kicks and 42 handballs

Red side had 31 kicks and 24 handballs

(So King was talking out of his arse IMO)

What I noticed was:

Yellow team
Hands in close skill was so much cleaner and better than the red side, got a lot of clean handballs from the packs
However, their kicking into the 50 was very average and to me explains why Balta and Kosi has no influence in the match at all, kicking into the 50 needs a lot of work.
Kicked 2 goals from some awesome handball chains and looked great when they did so.
Looked to me when kicking they did go long more often but a lot of shanked kicks, there was a passage of play where we did try and do short kicks on the wing but it looks really average and messy passage of play, lots of turn overs.
Also rarely did i see many kicks out of the clearances it was more handballs to open players.
What i will say on Balta is he had really only 2 decent chances that first half, the first was from a sequence of handball chains and he was on the receiving end running into the 50, he tried to kick the ball to the top of the square on a short kick and it dropped short, he could have easily put the ears back and had a running shot, maybe all his time in the back line instincts stopped him? He also had a another chance but was in the forward pocket in the open he shanked his snap and it went out on the full. Other than those 2 chances he spend a lot of time flying for marks in pack situations from shanked kicks,

Red team
I started the game thinking they were the better side but this wasnt the case as the 1st half went on, they werent clean in the middle had a lot of handballs chopped off or smothered and their kicking long into the forward line was pretty average same as the yellow side.
Felt they had to kick more as they seemed to be bogged down into the back pocket a bit so struggled to get some decent flow into the game, however their first goal looked excellent, was a chain of handballs on the wing 4 maybe 5 and resulted in an excellent goal. Need to see more of this I feel.

Will go back and watch the 2nd half when i get a bit more time.
Agree with your comments about the red team…just feel they lacked polish in the last passage into the forward 60 but the energy and ball getting capacity was there …lots to like when they got their shit together

gonna take till round 12 for em to work it out again
I guess they just think that every off season he suddenly develops the natural instincts to be a forward.

He can be a gun defender so obviously he should be moved to a spot that he's not suited too.

We don't need the AFL or the umpires to **** us up, we can do it just fine without any help.

Thought that Martin, Bolton and Baker were a cut above everyone else.

Graham and Hopper looked very good

Mansell really impressive, chased hard, tackled hard and hit the scoreboard, still the odd missed kick.

Tresize and Brown were solid, had some good moments and seem to be around the mark for selection

Dow and Mcauliffe seem to have jumped Sonsie, both had big midfield minutes. Mcauliffe made some good decisions by foot.

Lefau looked like the best key forward which is worrying considering he is a train on player and more a big bodied mid

Fawcett showed some good signs, but got pushed off line and under the ball a fair bit which is to be expected

Yeah not sure what King was watching because i thought we handpassed a lot, when kicking we did go long but we still handballed a fair bit imo.

would like to see Kick to Handball ratio but also long v short kicks.
Kept the ball very hot which will be interesting if this an ooze stamp , as in last 3y dimma liked to suck the air out of the room to try and find an avenue in as opposed to helta skelter we were famous for

Karen Corn said today that Chris Scott is the best coach in the league and deserves the most pay

what a *******
Must be short of Footy news...so decided to rattle the Tiger's cage for reactions!;)

Ok i got to watch the 2nd half of the match Sim and got to say it was very different to the 1st half.

Also noticed Maurice went from the red team to the yellow team after half time.

Yellow Team
60 kicks 26 handballs

Red Team
55 kicks 38 handballs

So perhaps King was referencing the 2nd half more than the first. However, I didn't feel like our kicking was over the top, a lot of short kicks to players leading diagonal, kicking over the top stuff really. Was fairly effective. It's our long kicks into 50 i have concern with, they didnt improve in the 2nd half.

Yellow Team
I felt came out of the blocks in the 2nd and looked too good, noticed we had Bolton, Graham & Dow in the centre, Bolton looked far more interested and was a class above early. It was interesting though, I felt the Yellow team stopped running and that's where the Red team got into the game. Yellow seems to rely on their kicking more, however towards the end you could tell Bolton stepped it up and pretty much won the game at the end with his last 5 minutes.

Red Team
I thought they out played Yellow for most of the 2nd half, Taranto, Hopper & McAuliffe in the middle looked to be running over the top of Baker, Graham, Dow & Bolton. The Red team had some nice link up work in the 2nd half and probably could have done better except their kicking for goal at one point undid their good work.

What i will say about the match sim is gee there were a lot of ball ups, out on the fulls and throw ins. Perhaps it's just early season cobwebs and not being clean early in the contest that results in more ball ups & crap kicking.

My concerns are similar, Kosi just couldn't get near it, 1st half was due to shit kicking from the team, second half was i think a lack of intent from Yellow so didn't get the opportunities. Balta needs more work, a lot as saying that's because he isn't a forward, fair enough but he will continue to play up forward I have no doubt. Even if Lynch comes back, Tom can't do it all. Balta forward its here to stay.

Gibcus needed that hit out IMO will get better for it however Lefau took a good body mark on him in the 2nd half that resulted in him swapping with Young, then Fawcett took a nice grab on Gibcus so it was certainly a match up problem, just not sure why Red didn't use it more to their favour.

I think the stand outs for me were Martin in the 1st half, Bolton in the 2nd half and Hopper in the middle. Wish I could say more were but I didn't think so.

I will wait to see how we are against Collingwood in the scratch match. I dont rate Melbourne this year and think they are going to implode so it will be interesting to see how we stack up against opposition.

Though F me we look ordinary without Lynch. Kosi and Balta couldnt take a mark against VFL players. They could of found the coffin of Francis Drake or King Solomon's tomb before they found the footy yesterday.

Lets look at things realistically

  • 2 teams how many players 45-50 ?
  • Talent of the club split into 2 teams with some VFL grade players thrown into the sides
  • 1st match sim of the year and alot of players coming back from injury and some still not available
  • New Coach / Game plan needs learning and getting used to

Just blowing out the cobwebs

Just had the chance to watch the match sim.

Thomson Dow has given himself every chance of becoming a player. Clean hands in tight with good movement in traffic should see him establish himself in the best 23 moving forward.

Maurice looks to have been given more freedom to use his pace in an attacking mode rather than just defensive work. His run and carry , like when he came down the Punt Road wing where he takes 2 bounces and delivers quickly inside F50, could be a weapon in Yze fast transition game. Also noticed he was giving first option more often than not although it did cause one turnover when he killed Daniel with an ill timed handball.

Jack Graham looked the best he has in years, powerful running and also got hands on the footy in an offensive capacity. Hopefully we see the best of Graham this year after a couple of tough years.

Baker in the midfield looked handy as a depth option. Not sure he starts there in the best 23, but coming off HF and rotating through the middle could prove more than handy.

Was interesting to see the yellow teams back half with Gibcus Young Short and Daniel being joined by Brown and Trezise, gives an insight into a future back 7. Come the season proper you'd expect to see Broad Vlastuin and Grimes being the ones who round out the back 7 to start the season.

KPP wise it wasn't the best hitout for them with none of them really standing out at either end of the ground. Putting that down to the fact that the wind was blustery and an open field like Punt Road isn't going to provide much shelter. Add to that there didn't seem to be a real structure we were playing with as it seemed that the focus was more on getting the ball inside 50 quickly before the defenders got a chance to set up. Will be interesting to see how things change once Lynch is back and the best 23 is all on the same side rather than like it was yesterday where they were split.

Overall it was nothing more than a glorified training session and probably the longest match sim session they've had since preseason began. Be more interest in how the match sim against Melbourne goes when we're likely to have the best available 23 running around together. Then we can see if there are reasons to be concerned or excited.
Love the summation, but how do you see grimes in the best 23 after last season and the fact he hasn’t been involved pre season ?

Did Sonsie look slow to you? That was my perception

Not sure but gut feel says they will want him there for leadership initially

Regardless of actual ratio the movement into F50 was very quick , which doesn’t generally equate to efficiency, prob relying on quick entry allowing less time for defenders to setup , I think much of our success will depend on how much qty we can get into F50 , I’m confident we’ll get plenty of chances , let’s see

I wonder how long that will last if his form is the same or worse than the last couple of years.
