One thing I really do like about Lyon is he thinks outside the box and is innovative. Remember when we stormed the league in 2009. The way to pinch a flag is to try something the others' aren't.
Not so inovative, his team's couldnt score enough to win in the big games.
He took the defensive game plan from Rodney Eade & lost.
He is currently trying to change this, maybe? Last season was a mixed up thing.

Langford probably longer term plays Macrae's inside extractor role. Probably still need to draft a longer term replacement or hope we get LDU types.

Travaglia looks like a Lyon style player and adds to our run and roll set up. I really loved Travaglia's Metro v Country game. He was probably second-best on ground behind Lindsay but looked the more flashy of the two. I loved Lindsay's game but there was something about him reminded me of an upmarket Ben Paton. I think Trav has the bigger upside but probably starting a bit further back.

I tried to tell people that they shouldn't assume that we'd go pure mid with those picks. The way we set up in the future is going to be good to watch. Wilson, Henry, Nas, Hastie, Garcia etc are all runners. Actually Windhager too. Carroll doesn't mind gallop either. Add Schoenmaker's distribution kicks and the older guys like Sinclair, Wood and Hill and we have a really good spread and run set up. Probably one of the best in the AFL.
We need to re-sign Pou, Nas Garcia etc asap, some for at least 5 years

What I took from yesterday's training drill where bj would punt the ball long to a contest then sharp ball movement was Lyon on the boundary yell width, him wanting players to look on the outside before going through the corridor. Was trying to get bj to go more boundary and was having ( for the drill anyway) have Butler as wide as possible.
Putting 2+2 together to make six, he wants to stretch the zone out of shape before going back through the corridor.
In isolation a defence can roll across to cover that, but as we saw in the se ond half v Geelong, they were blown because of our run and couldn't recover when we did that and switched forward through the corridor.

Lyon grabbed the best of the list he inhereted, and since then every player recruited or drafted can run and many at absolute extreme levels, even Arie and Boyd have tanks.
SaintsTV had some fascinating stats on how we out run every team in the last 14 weeks and how, in his rookie year Wilson had 9 of the 25 best distance and sprint games in AFL history. Now we have another in Travaglia.
Is it the right plan? Well it is Lyon's plan and let's be frank, we have had one plan work since 1873 so at very least it is a specific and well thought out direction.

It will be interesting to see what BJ does as a rookie coach for Sandy and how he does it.

Wouldn’t be surprised if we are trying to mould Wilson into a Gulden-type player - diminutive size but immense aerobic capacity and positioning

Means we can get the best out of him without having to play him as a full time inside mid
185cm is “diminutive”…?

A big change and a good one, although can make supporters angry and sad is our new found ruthlessness.
In the past we would have let Seb and Members hang around for a couple more years and there is pretty low tolerance now to have blokes playing three games in two years due to constant injury niggles.
We looked to offload a decent player in Battle to bring in good youth.
Our eye is firmly in the future rather than hanging on to possibles just in case they break out.
No one is safe and they would know it so they will be working their arses out and if they don’t we’ll see ya mate thanks for your input.
I like it, create a hard arse club and a winning attitude.

Outside of the 2010 replay we absolutely had our opportunities and matched the 'high scoring, talented, X Factor dynasty' teams of the era.

Lyon can't do anything about Milne kicking 0.2 or Schneider kicking 2.3 in 2009.

As for modern day - The 2nd half of 2024 showed that this team can pile on scores when they execute the game plan properly. The coaching isn't the issue, it's the ability of the players to consistently make it work.

Everytime someone mentions how vocal, strong and good Mattaes is going in the training reports, I spontaneously combust, I grin and get giddy

I don't think I've ever been this excited for a kid to make it. Future Captain.

Same, and I thought he was the biggest FIGJAM on planet earth when i saw his pre draft interviews. He has exactly the kind of confidence and belief our introverted squad of the last decade has been severely lacking.

Rodney Eade?

He took the Sydney plan with him, from Roo's, and had the best game plan in 2009.
Collingwood copied and beat him, barely , with better players, in 2010.
Anything he took from Eade was so long ago, its not relevant to 2024/2025

We found it so hard to replace talent at the same rate as we lost it, it became a sense of dread losing anyone.

We are taking a leap of faith but to take the next step we need to move forward with more youth. If you draft well and play kids at some point the investment pays off with a surge of improvement.

100% true but Lyon has always had a taxing game plan. Every player has to work at 100% effort for 100% of the time and most of the side is forced to run up the field to provide cover or options. The criticism of him was that he had a very negative style. He made matches into a drudge fest of locked down games. Now it's the absolute norm but back then people thought he was shitting on the attractiveness of the code.

Now when you look at some of the scores his sides put up you can't believe people thought it was locked down footy. His game style looked beautiful compared to the Hardwick Tigers but that was an era already turned defensive.

I was the opposite, loved that we finally had a bit of alpha in the place. I wasn't sure he could back the talk up with actions but loved his refreshing honesty. I wish we'd get him doing more media. I love listening to him. He has FA filter and says what he thinks.

I think Roos is who you mean. Eade did the flood but was pretty old-school besides that. Roos adapted a lot from basketball and world sports into a strategy to counter attack from a defensive position. Zones, using space to open more space etc.

Yeah the Bulldogs were always near the top for points scored while they were in contention. Ross was in the box when Sydney went back to back grand finals with Roos and hasn’t been able to get that out of his mind since. You’d rather be better defensively of course but we desperately need someone from the old Richmond system in charge of ball movement because you can’t win unless you score as well these days.
