I reckon given the amount of content he likes on Instagram about bags, coke and ket - plus vaping at our Mad Monday after the GF - there wasn't much hope that he was going to be an AFL quality player.
Unfortunately not as professional as his younger brother. Had the talent, but like a lot of players, you need the dedication to make it work. And seems he lacked that.
And instead of staying in melb to get onto a vfl list to get another shot at the afl system, he went back home. Split up with his gf after a while with the long distance (his ex is the neice of one of my friends, which was how I knew who was sub in some games) Guess he didn't want it enough.

1. I think he was played out of position most of the time. Like you, I thought he played well in the centre I think he should have been a full time mid

I think mids being played out of position in the VFL is the biggest cop out excuse there is. There's a few blokes who are pure mids who don't have the skillset to be successful in other roles - but they're rare. Most mids play flanks early in their career and do well and progress into the midfield based on good performance in other roles - all of our current mids did.

I think it was symptomatic of his lack of chase
Whenever he wasn’t in the middle, he could be played through / run off
Middle was his position as it was more see ball / get ball and, in initial contests, allowed him to be more unaccountable

Edit: I think he could play hbf in juniors but not at the next level which limited his viability
(Which goes to what you say)

Fair enough, but that's a description of a want to be mid who either needs to develop his outside game or become elite on the inside to survive without an outside game - and he didn't look like becoming elite on the inside.

And playing for south adel, he is playing forward with very little stints in the middle.
Some kids I guess are just happy to play footy and have fun and not want it enough. Doesn't have the drive Sid does.

It's often more than drive - some good athletes have nice skills and look good in drills, but just don't see the game quickly or well enough to succeed.

It would really stuff up the whipping boy thread.

Best to write off those you hate early. A bit of projection of one's own failures onto them is good: they're weak, they're too relaxed and need to fire up, they don't care enough, etc. Don't let the fact you know nothing about their situation get in the way. That's the space to fill with bile! Then when they come good, you can move your target to another generation of fringe players and direct ire toward them. So many personal problems to work out in this way, after all....

None of which relates to the post that triggered this angle you're taking.

Take this as gospel - I have been told AJ is still struggling with social media barrage which is still lingering and affecting him.
My source - it’s impeccable ( not AJ) and told to me directly from someone with intimate and daily involvement with the squad.

I had high hopes but not expecting much now from AJ.
Easy solution, get off social media

With his attributes I hope he could develop some James Clement type style to his game in defence
He has the athleticism. Just needs to improve his one on one strength and competitiveness
And his kicking. So needs to improve his one on one strength, competitiveness, and kicking to become James Clement style. And he's never played defense at senior age level before.

It's a long shot.

In a few years, if he really starts really receding, he'll be able to pull off James Clement style hair.

I think we should all nominate who we think will take home the Chugg Trophy!
Bookie's have stopped taking money on Reef. Allan is the value bet. Huge plunge will come for him if he does well in a practice game, but the draftees will shake up the field. If we draft a tall forward, it'll just take a couple of Joe the Goose goals in a practice match and we'll have the next Corey Gault - the bloke who really should have the trophy named after him.

Yeah, Corey Gault is a better shout - I don't remember there being any fanfare at all for Isaac Chugg, and Chugg actually played an AFL game (that we won, in a season we made a prelim) which is way above the odds for some other duds on our list.

Arlo Draper is my trophy winner, so much hype for a guy who never really came close to making it.

Arlo did give us a victory over Dodo in the draft. His annoyance made Arlo's recruitment a win.
I never wanted Dodoro to be angry. I always wanted him leaving the draft saying that they had won the draft and got the players ranked #1, #2 and #3 on their rankings, because it was always a guarantee that they'd drafted a bunch of mediocre crabs that would get them nowhere.

If we take one of those mediocre crabs that they rated, they have a chance to accidentally draft a good player. Now, in this case, they still didn't, instead drafting Alastair Lord, a player who's crowning achievement, unlike his Brownlow winning namesake, was being an unused medical sub in a game in 2022.

Unfortunately, the heights of being an unused medical sub trumps Arlo's AFL career, so it ended up a win for the Dons.

I think aiming to have him become a back up who projects as a best-7 back over time is a much better plan than bringing in a Tomlinson-type.

I also hope they work hard to try & pry out a Nick Murray-type for next year.
Agreed and I’d suggest there might be scope for him to be a bit better (I’ve put it out there that I think he’s the 4th KPD in the clubs mind). My post though was purely aimed at the posters that froth over Jen loving the track form of a certain player every single offseason!

The Chugg Cup has had some illustrious winners with Draper, Eyre and obviously the inaugural winner Chuggy (special mention to Briskey and Macrae) the common denominator with all those players is that track form means nothing this time of year.

They used to be clled the March Champions - it was worse, as they barely did any match sim at training and the hype was based solely on training drills.

Exactly, just because they spent most of the their holidays overseas training, doesn't mean they should get special treatment. Bloody slackers
THey're all a bit soft. All this keeping fit to make their preseason easier is weak. Drink a heap of beer and really let yourself go and then have some lunatic yell abuse at you whilst making you do 100 100s to see how hard a real preseason is.
