Pre-season training

December 13th.

9:30am

Bobby made a brief appearance in casual training t-shirt, walked around the oval with a trainer; then went inside. He clearly did something on tuesday, when he did early drills and then disappeared. Unless its concussion..

Jordy, Checkers just completed some running then were on the bikes.
Long did some running, some drills.
Josh D only rode the bike. Dealing with a niggle.
WHE was also absent.

No sign of Cochrane, but he did a decent running session yesterday. He should be back into full training in the new year.

They started off with some conditioning, which Ash actually did very well in this. Maybe if it had gone on much longer he would have dropped back, but he was at the start of the pack. It was probably about 20-30 metre sprints up and back.

Then they went into some fundamentals, kicking drills, then there was this drill -- where I'm not sure it was keepings off your opposition, or just make the oppostion to come at you. It revolved around players to kick around to one another, and there was some players in the middle of the circle that had to try to force a turnover and intercept the ball. Then following that was a transition drill from two sets of teams on each side of the ground. They would move from the ball from D50 and through the F50.

Then match sim begun:

Wingers - (white)Crisp, (black) Sidey (black)Lippa, (White) DeMattia
Cox was up forward while Steene in the ruck for the white team.

White mids: Pendles, Sullivan, Perryman v Black mids: Long, Nick and Allan. Steene & DC rucks
White defence: Markov, TJ, IQ, Dean, Frampton, Howe V Black forwards: Fin, Hayes, Schultz, Johnson, Smit, Jamie
White forwards: Mcstay, West, Cox, Membrey, Beau v Black defence: Parker, Maynard, Houston,Moore, Reef, Ryan

Fin was very good. Very clean around stoppage and his running capacity. Reef played up against Mcstay and they two had a good battle, both had their moments.

As well as Parker did last season, he looks much like a footballer now.

Going by the structure in match sim, seems we may be heading for 2 forwards, 1 2nd ruck (white team was Cox, Black team was Smit) fwiw, Checkers didn't participate today.

They did some 1v1 fighting in line groups, then they ran out of there and it seems, to past aami park where storm trains; did some intense tackling drills, then up to the tan for some hill sprints to finish off their massive session. Probably ended up 3hrs overall.
They do usually like to drive them hard on the last day of training before the break. His body shape definitely has changed now.

Thanks Jen for you big efforts.
Hope you have a great Christmas.

As for training, are you concerned we have so many injured already? Mitchell, DeGoey, Hill, Mihochek, Jaicos, Maynard, Hoskin-Elliott plus a few fringe guys. Seems far from ideal?

Also, what are your thoughts on Perryman, Houston and Membrey so far?

Thanks again!

Thanks for the updates Jen2310 how has TJ been going I think he could be the surprise this year
Looks like he has added some size. But it's gonna be a tough defence to get into, unless its targeting the howe role.

I hadn't heard this 🥴 Just heard on sen from this morning. Anyway, looks to be on the improve.

The big news in that is that another 3 are officially training houses down. And bruzzy seems to have become the official spokesman for fallen houses.

They need advantages. Titchs advantages aren't power or strength. I doubt he'd be particularly high up the power and strength rankings in the Pies midfield. Nor would Lachie Neale's or Marcus Ashcroft's be at Brisbane. Or Caleb Seeing, etc.

Few if any can compete with the power and strength of Cripps and Petracca. Titch isn't one of them. That's an advantage that makes them really hard to stop.

There are still players who throw themselves in and often win head high frees as a result. Titch and Adams play like it at the pies.
Every team still usually has one.

For me personally if Mitchell and DeGoey are not back in the side then Sidebottom goes into the middle and does a role on one of the oppos best mids. It worked well for us late in 2024. Lipinski or my main perference IQ then replace Sidebottom on the wing with Houston able to cover IQ down back.

I also hope that one of Perryman or Allan is able to step up for some major high quality midfield minutes. This would negate the loss of Mitchell and DeGoey.
The only reason Perryman didn't get more midfield time was the depth of the GWS midfield - Coniglio, Greene, Green, Kelly...
Peatling is another who just needed more opportunity, which he'll get at Adelaide.
It wouldn't surprise me to see Perryman light it up in 2025.

There was talk that a number of players were carrying fairly significant injuries for the majority of the year, which might explain the form of some of them

Josh, Q and Bruz were all rumoured to have been carrying stuff all year

And who cares about his field kicking! He’s gonna be banging them through the big sticks, not trying to hit a moving target! 🤣

Tony Lockett probably had lousy field kicking too!

Did Tony ever make a field kick? Probably kicked more goals than had field kicks over his career.

I think of him as having been a good field kick too, but yeah looking at his stats, how would you know - more than three times as many goals as field kicks. According to afltables - in his career, he had 2367 kicks and kicked 1360 goals, 590 behinds.

So in 281 games, he had 417 kicks that didn't score - a fair few of them would have been out on the full or kicks for goal that fell short - he probably averaged about 1 kick a game that wasn't a shot for goal.

I can't believe those stat's. Amazing.

Locket had no significant tank.
The leg rope was real.
He couldn’t get far enough up the ground to generate a field kick.

Pardon the intrusion, but there has never been such a physical KPF running at the ball, then kicking a goal.
The bloke was a freak.
Remember when Dunstall said he used to look at the goal kickers after the games on Saturday, same time games etc, and Saints were struggling, but Lockett still kicked 7 or 8 in a struggling team.
Absolute Freak

Totally agree. That was locket’s one wood.
And his three iron, sand wedge and putter.

Not alone, but there seems to be a chance we’ll be without De Goey too - if not based on his current status, then based on his history of being injured at some stage every year.

That’s our numbers 1 & 2 inside mids that could be out suddenly. Then we end up putting Crisp or Perryman in there to replace them and we lose the benefit of being able to use them from the backline AND having a weaker midfield for it.
The difference this year is that we've added Perryman and Houston. Both are potential midfield options, but at the very least strong half backs who can cover for others moving from half back to the middle. That's not even considering potential young players stepping up as half backs or mids.

Our midfield coverage is strong and improved over last season. We won't be forced to play a Sullivan or Long if we're missing 1 or 2 mids, it would take further injuries.

I love the look of Reef right now.
I get the feeling that he feels like he can impose himself physically and full on.

He's got that confident, ferocious aura about him.

We need an inside mid like Mitchell to be at our full strength. You can't say that the Perryman and Houston solves this issue.

To win a GF, we need a player who at least resembles Titch in the role he plays. That might well be Long. Or it might be Allan. But it has to be someone.

It makes me wonder why it has taken until his fifth year and a near delisting to dedicate himself to building up physically and giving it a real shot.

A change in role makes a difference. If they said he’d be playing KPD and he needs to bulk up, that’s a good reason.

He maybe wouldnt want to be this big if his role is a roaming HFF or if he was still aiming to be a midfielder until now.

The fact he brought up his ton in 15 odd games in 1991 is crazy. In that there was a stretch of 34 goals in 3 games if memory serves. Started the season late after suffering a fractured vertebrae. What a weapon.

I guess it's a bit like the old 'definition of madness' trying the same thing believing it will give you different results. He just needed someone to get him to look at his career from a different angle.

I've believed in his potential pretty strongly for the last 2 years and was pretty frustrated that he never seemed to get a full run at it. So hopefully this is the chance he gets to be noticed for a different role that cements his spot. He's always seemed to be a good tackler, very opportunistic and always providing a lead-up option. A role down back - playing against some good forwards - would also be a great lesson in how to succeed as both a forward and a back.

Bring on a breakout year for our Beef 'n McGuinness Pie.
