Predict the test side in 3 years

Keeper is also a query, Carey seems the obvious but his keeping is poor at best

Glad someone else can see that Carey shouldn’t be the test lock majority have made him out to be for 3 years. Is 28.5 and FC bat ace of 33 hardly screams I’m ready.

It will be what he’s done in ODI cricket that gets him in.

Not many other keepers putting there hands up to make a move on the test WK position atm.

This is far from a knock on Marnus, but Pucovski appears to have to most well rounded game and the most suited to bat at number 3. As such I predict that the selectors, in their infinite wisdom, will drop Burns and move Marnus up to opener ala Langer and Ponting, while promoting Pucovski to 3. Unless Smith develops leprosy I can't see him going anywhere. Head will constantly churn out gritty 30s and forgettable 50's to balance out the occasional failure leaving him with an average hovering just over 40 but with one of the worst conversion rates in world cricket. I've got no idea who'll be in the running to bat at 6. Green is flavour of the month, Sangha ticks a few boxes but isn't in the NWS team, Doran had big wraps on him and is at least playing first class cricket, Heazlett will play white ball cricket and perhaps that might be his in to the test side. Or do they go back to the well with someone who's already debuted? The worst option, which inevitably means it'll happen is McDermott and M.Marsh will rotate through the 6 position.
Like a few others have said, Carey's keeping leaves much to be desired and yet, if not him, then who? Inglis, nope. Harper, his batting doesn't scream pick me. Pierson, his keeping is on par with Careys with a lower batting average. Neville's replacement, well it wouldn't be the first time someones got their blue cap and baggy green at the same time but still no. I've gone further left field with hopefully the best bat of the lot. The bowlers should pick themselves, J.Richardson is the heir apparent but Starc and Hazelwood will only be 32 and 31 respectively. Cummins will still be in his 20s so he's a walk up starter. Lyon will still be around until he's 37/38 which is another 2~3 years away.

1 Harris/Bancroft (30)
2 Marnus (28)
3 Pucovski (24)
4 Smith (33)
5 Head (28)
6 Maddinson (30)
7 Phillipe* (25)
8 Cummins (c)(29)
9 J.Richardson (26)
10 Hazelwood (31)
11 Lyon (35)
Average age will be 29
12 Starc (32)
13 Doran (26)
14 Heazlett (27)
15 Pope (23)

Let's go full nuts:

1. Street
2. Solway
3. Labushagne
4. Smith
5. Head
6. Fraser-McGurk (wk)
7. Green
8. Cummins (c)
9. Hazlewood
10. Richardson
11. Pope

12. Sutherland

Yes, this is next to no chance of being correct and if anything, is more like five years in the future.

Australia U19 World Cup squad: Cooper Connolly, Oliver Davies, Sam Fanning, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Mackenzie Harvey, Lachlan Hearne, Corey Kelly, Liam Marshall, Todd Murphy, Patrick Rowe, Tanveer Sangha, Liam Scott, Bradley Simpson, Connor Sully, Matthew Willans.

Connelly is only 16. Scored 396 @ 66 in the under 19 champs.

Fraser-McGurk has played first class cricket.

Looking at the under 17 and under 19 champs there are many players of Indian/Sri Lankan background coming through.

Not so much in three years time, but what are peoples thoughts for when Tim Paine retires to have a mini reboot, keeping the core of the squad. Just an idea I thought of that could accomodate all of our most promising youngsters.
1. Warner
2. Phillippe/Carey
3. Labuschagne
4. Smith
5. Head
6. Pucovski
7. Green
8. Starc
9. Cummins
10. Lyon
11. Hazlewood

So essentially Burns, Wade and Paine out, and then Pucovksi, Green and one of Phillippe or Carey

Phillippe hasn't kept in the Shield for WA all year, I think.

Of the current side Warner and Paine are the only ones to be replaced due to age.
Burns and Wade I would hope we have upgraded.

Out: Warner, Paine, Wade, Burns
In: Pucovski, Carey, Green, ?

Hopefully Bryant, Street, Weatherald or someone else has the talent to come on. I’ve gone with Pucovski to open because Labuschagne has done so well at 3, Smith at 4 stays as is and Head has shown enough at 5.

Pucovski
Bryant/Street
Labuschagne
Smith
Head
Carey
Green
Cummins
Pattinson
Starc
Lyon
12th: Hazlewood

David Warner will still be playing in three years time. How many Australian top order batsmen have retired before 36? Clarke is probably the only one I can think of and his back was ****ed.

Not sure about 3 years, but can't see the team changing much next summer.

Think Paine will play on. Maybe Burns and Wade may not be there but expect everyone else to stay the same.

I think Paine retires after the Indian tour next year. He will be 36.

Could see the following lineup going to South Africa in 2021 and then the Test Championship Final in 2021.

Warner
Burns
Labuschagne
Smith
Head
Carey
Green
Starc
Cummins
Hazlewood
Lyon

Pattinson.

I’m a massive Green fan but as others have pointed out, we don’t do allrounders well. Because our fast bowling stocks are so excellent for a while, he’ll need to prove he can average 35+ in a top 6 spot OR have Carey average 35+ at 6 and he bat at 7 with a 30+

Can’t help but think we’re going early on Green. He’s obviously talented but he’s 20 years old. Most top six batsmen don’t really make the grade at test level until their late 20s, fast bowlers usually a touch earlier. Given I’m talking about specialist batsmen and specialist bowlers it’d be some sort of achievement if Green is genuinely test standard in his early 20s.

Call me negative but he’s already shown he’s injury prone like most fast bowlers in their early 20s and that alone makes me think he might struggle to hold down a test spot consistently until he is in his mid 20s at least.

Can’t see much changing in three years. Paine will be retired, Warner probably still playing but maybe in his last season or two. Hopefully we can do better than Burns and Wade in three years as both aren’t much good imo - they are the best option atm though. Everyone else looks like they could easily be there in 4-5 years time outside of injuries and/or better players becoming available.

Not sure where the Philippe love is coming from - bloke isn't even a WA regular. Inglis is more likely IMO - had a slow start with his batting - but on the improve and a terrific keeper.

I don't see 3 years as being unrealistic for Green

It isn't as though we have locked in all 6 batting positions and there are clear alternatives

If he's performing as he currently is - and he's roughly equivalent to the other contenders - get the lad in if he can bowl.

Our biggest concern remains a viable spinner. We are lucky over the best part of the last 25 years - we have had a reliable spinner to toil away at one end. (with a noticeable gap between Lyon and warne). That's why we get away with 4 bowlers.

Yeah Inglis is the best keeper not at the end of his career in the country

Easier to predict who are locks to be there in 3 years time to be honest;

(1) David Warner - Will still be 36. Others by this stage should be coming hard for him.
(2) **** - spot well and truly up for grabs. A plethora of options could be had here. Marcus Harris (30), Bryce Street (24), Renshaw (26)
(3) Marnus Labushagne - Will establish himself as one of the best in the world.
(4) Steve Smith - Will still only be 33 and be contributing to our success.
(5) Travis Head - Feel he may get a chance up one spot if we decide to introduce an all rounder or just be more experienced in this line up.
(6) **** - Another spot well and truly open. Could be any of Nic Maddinson (31), Will Puckovski (25), Sam Heazlett (28) or someone else potentially.
(7) Alex Carey - Seems to be the favourite as the incumbent Australian wicket keeper. Will be 31 in 3 years so still quite young imho.
(8) Pat Cummins - Possibly the best player on the planet by this stage.
(9) James Pattinson - Will still be 32 in 3 years time so not inconceivable that he still be around the mark as a test match bowler.
(10) Mitch Starc - See Pattinson
(11) Nathan Lyon - Like a fine win,e is getting better with age.

So really, pending fitness, only two (possibly three with the wicket keeping spot)open for state players to push for. Easy to say but 4 years is a different story with only Labushagne and Cummins the only locks from this group to be there in 4 years time

I think Hazlewood is the most consistent in terms of playing that workhorse role. Can bowl 8 over spells which you can't really get from Patto or Starc.

Warner
Patterson
Labuschagne
Smith
Fraser-McGurkin
Carey
Green
Cummins
Starc
Hazlewood
Lyon
12th/13th Pattinson Pope

Making a major assumption that Fraser-Mcgurkin will be the next gun batsman after seeing what he’s done in FC games as a 17 year old. My crystal ball tells me will be better than Head.

Kurtis Patterson takes opening spot based on Labuschagne becoming long term no 3.

Hopefully Green is bowling in 3 years time and helps take some of the workload off our aging frontline pacemen

Cummins first picked quick then toss up Hazlewood/ Starc/Pattinson

Hope green has some luck with his body. His bowling looks very impressive.

Hope Pucovski gets back into the mix.

Usi and Boland deserve to hang around for a while in the squad at least
