A lot of Xavs whinging here. The reason there are so many ex Xavs at Vafa is that they get off there ass and are prepared to help run a great comp. Success breeding success. Does bias come into selection? Probably. Impossible not to. You'd all lean towards you're own.
And as someone else said, many like to take the break and do make themselves unavailable.
Scotch could have had 3-4 play if the wanted to.
Xavs are always keen to play for Lethers. You gotta train to be picked.

And you have to be picked in the first place to be able to train. No matter how you slice it for the bottom team to have 6 in the squad and 4 in the final 22 is plain wrong. Picked on form – please!

And I’ll tell you who makes this a great comp – the volunteers who run the clubs – not the paid employees at the VAFA and those they choose to let into the inner sanctum. Plenty of people would like to get involved but it is a closed shop.

Having VFL listed players in the team is indefensible. I heard the VAFA U23s coach being interviewed on one of the community radio stations last week. He made a point of saying they were not eligible to play for his team.

Dribble. It's not the players from Xavs that were picked fault that they are last. Wynne is close to the best player playing Ammos. Handley easily leads the Coleman. Ambrose is a gun.

Edit by OTP: Not needed. Behave.

Great you want to join the discussion but perhaps go back and ready previous posts to get yourself properly informed before you call other posts dribble. Have already said Handley deserves his spot. The talent of Wynne and Ambrose is not in question but they are VFL players. Don’t even have the VAFA as their primary competition and should not be selected.

From the AGE today.

No matter what you think, they get attention.

THE chief programmer of the AFL fixture is expected to take on another difficult football mission: the task of resurrecting Old Xaverians from the verge of relegation.

Simon Lethlean will be approached on Monday to return to coach the biggest club in community football.

Xavs, the reigning champs in the Victorian Amateur Football Association's Premier Section, are last with just one win after seven of the 18 games.

But they are in good company. The side they knocked off in the 2013 grand final, St Bede's-Mentone, also have just the solitary win.

Both have been hit by injury and the loss of players through work, travel and clearances to other competitions.

Old Xaverians is the club that Amateur people talk about because they’ve won 12 of their 13 Premier flags since 1995. Since 1993 Xavs have only missed the Premier finals once, in 2004.

This week they dismissed premiership coach Dom Berry.

That’s just eight games since he co-coached the club, with Nick Bourke, to its latest conquest. As a player, Berry was a member of the 1996 premiership team.

Xavs wanted Berry to have many lieutenants, which is how they’ve traditionally structured their coaching, but he did not have them.

Berry did not return calls.

Xavs president Simon Hunt said he would put it to Lethlean that he should return to the club he led to flags in 2009 and ’10.

Since then, Lethlean has since taken the VAFA’s representative team to the top of Melbourne’s community football table, with victory over the strong Eastern Football League in this year's pre-season interleague competition, as well as a win over the strong Victorian Country Football League team.

The five-time Old Xaverian premiership player is coaching the VAFA again on Sunday against AFL Queensland in Brisbane.

‘‘We won’t be relegated,’’ said Hunt, who downplayed the link to 1996, when Xavs last sacked a coach.

Xavs won the premiership under Richmond great Barry Richardson in 1995 but under the coaching of Simon Meehan in 1996 they were 2-7 after nine rounds.

That was when Nick Bourke took over for his first stint of coaching Xavs.

Ironically, Berry made his debut for the club on the same day that Bourke made his coaching debut, in the round 10 thriller against De La Salle.

The Red ‘n Blacks lost only one more game for the season and went on to win the flag.

History repeats as Xavs host De La Salle next Saturday (there is no home-and-away on Saturday due to the long weekend).

There is further interest in the match because Xavs have stopped De La Salle in three finals series since 2009. Onfield incidents have heightened relations over the past two years.

In other VAFA news, law student Alex Anthony, 22, this year has become the third woman to umpire in the Premier section. She broke in to the grade at the start of the season and remains there.

A fortnight ago, the VAFA suspended a Northern Blues under-19 player, Mohamed Kodsi, for 2½ years for manhandling a field umpire.

An unaffiliated supporter has agreed to undertake counselling after a racist slur against a Premier B umpire. This man has also agreed to train towards umpiring a match.

Think the indication was there in the presser Maxie. Both Bourke and Lethlean were approached. Bourke suggested his commitment to the Northern Blues would preclude him. Lethlean leaving it open by suggesting he'd look at it after the Vic game.

Don't rule out a Richardson return if Simon says nup.

Handley great. Missed a few sitters for him as well. Could have kicked 10. Howat is a superb runner and kick. Hitting everyone lace out all day. Caven marked everything. Paul damaging. I watched 3/4 on Vafatv

Word on the street has Co-Coaches (Both VAFA Premiership Coaches) down at Orrong road coupled with a support crew oozing with premiership success over the past 20 years.

Be interesting to see whether that is enough to turn the tide. Coming off 14 a day break since their last game and some recuperation time, I wouldnt be suprised to see a vast improvement. Nine other sides will be doing their best to keep them down, but the upside is large.

Goes without saying that any person involved with the club over the past 20 years would be oozing with Premiership success. I've heard they've convinced a couple of their VFL players to play on a permanent basis. Will be interesting to see how they go. Chopper is in some pretty reasonable form too.

All the support and coaching resources in the world won't help unless they get the cattle on the park and in the right frame of mind. Would certainly feel for Berry if the players start to play better just because he fell on his sword. There's a huge difference between coaching quality lists with players on top of their game -v- bringing a lesser list up to be competitive after they've lost 6 out of 7.

As the late and great Allan Jeans said-"there are many different ways you can cook sausages but at the end of the day they are ONLY sausages".Suspect the 2014 Xavs variety are just the humble BBQ banger!

They have more talent in the group than their present position on the ladder indicates in my estimation.

any word on the xavs coach???

as its tuesday training tonight im sure if they havnt already they would be close to announcing?

For what its worth, Lethlean and Hawkins are co-coaches.
Looks like Xavs believe a cast of thousands in the coaching ranks will turn their season around and not 14 of the top 22 players that will return over the next 4-6 weeks..!!! Something seems a little on the nose with their administration down at Toorak Park...

Maybe its time for the Investigation Committee to start perusing all betting sheets relating to bet Type No.2014-A Grade Ammos Wooden Spoon?

Well if they have that many superstars gracing the club with their football services in the next month and a half, why didn't they stick with the coach, bite hard and accept that maybe the players' attitude let them down this year and aim to finish with 6-8 wins?

Parting ways with Berry in favour of two well credentialed part-timers who clearly aren't keen to take the job on exclusively seems a patch up job after a hatchet job!

Have enjoyed the many updates coming out from the old Xavs appreciation society (aka the VAFA) recently re various issues concerning Xavs (how many players they have used this season, sacking their coach and who is in line for the new appointment, photos of their Big V reps). Cant remember any such club getting a charmed media run ever. Anyone claiming they don't get favouritism from HQ is in serious denial.
Look fwd to the Monash v Xavs blockbuster round 1 next year. Apparently VAFA TV want to stream it live !!!

It appears The Age also give favouritism to them... Two articles in 1 week.

The 'Tall Poppy Syndrome' on this forum is laughable.

Hilarious. They are a monster club who have monstered the comp for two decades. So the vafa and the age and all of us will talk about them. Tall poppy indeed!

Honestly, the way this has been over-hyped and trumpeted via our supposed independent and objective competition media team, with all the OX newly appointed "star studded" coaches, I trust 97% of the VAFA CLUB fraternity will be hoping for one result this season, and one result only......

Fair dinkum, get me a bucket

I sincerely hope every opposition team uses this cr@p as ammunition to continue the current trend of results.

Hmm! Don't see it that way myself. A proud club that wants to stop the rot and has taken remedial action in time to do just that.

I'd be more than pleased to see them give De La a decent old spanking at the weekend.

Oh! And while I see them play a little I don't have any link to them.

Got no issue with them taking steps to turn it around just reckon they should shut up until they win some games and stop sucking oxygen out of the rest of the competition. No other club President would be permitted to make these public announcements thru HQ the way Hunt has. Frankly, I'm crossing everything I've got in hope that De La do a number on them so we don't get a "Lazarus" article on the VAFA website at 5.15pm telling us all about it.

If they lose their 7th game this Saturday, will we get a two page spread?

COME ON BELLERS!!!

Think the VAFA website is starved for information. Reckon if you guys fed 'em they'd be only too pleased to publish.

Just btw, it's a shocker of a website.
