Mentonians seem to be vastly improved on prior seasons, but their ressies still parked on the bottom of the ladder. Anyone know if they have added to their top line talent but still lack the depth of other clubs. Or is it too soon to tell and just the nature of whom has played whom? Ormond also appear to improved coming up from D based on the position of seniors and reserves. Any thoughts on the standard of C v D Bedford?

Monders look like the team who’ll continue to improve at the higher standard and have the depth to continue to win games. Look out in the finals, they’re well coached and are getting a good look at the opposition, big chance for a double jump.

Can't really agree with this based on results so far.

Through 4 games I have:

Willy well clear on top. They're talking of names to come back from VFL too. Well placed.

Ivanhoe & Mentone battling for 2nd & 3rd. Aside from Ivanhoe's bizarre loss to Ajax their results are to me the 2nd most impressive. Mentone have beaten everyone in front of them which is all you can do. Clearly the surprise side of the year and I'm sure they're deservedly pretty happy with themselves out at Keysborough. Obvious query though is that the quality of opposition so far hasn't been amazing.

Then Marcellin, Ormond, Camberwell & Hampton battling out for 4th to 7th. Classic Premier 'C' season from these teams so far. Can beat anyone on their day and then back it up with a bad loss the week after.

Next Mazenod & Ajax seem to be fighting over 8th & 9th. Both have a win but other results aren't great. Pretty surprising to see both Prem B sides at risk of the double drop.

Finally it seems as if PEGS are all but done already I'd guess. Only positive is they've played all three of my best three sides above already, so there's still hope that they can steal a few wins against weaker sides out at the wind tunnel.

Happy to hear any other thoughts. I'm sure I'll be plenty wrong with a few of these as it's way too early, but overall it seems to be one of the weakest Prem C's of the last 5 years I'd argue. Mostly due to the two Prem B sides coming down and being mostly underwhelming. In past years Prem B sides that have come down have generally been straight into the top 4.

Cheers

I hear their reserves will get quite a top up this week and next (well needed).
Mentone have a half dozen very good U19s playing seniors currently, other than that they lost their captain and one of their best.
The test will be the next two weeks for them with Ivanhoe & Williamstown

1 game from Shepheard, 9 goals. Seems quite formidable with a team that has a key ruck, Veluto and Mitris.
How many games do they expect Shepheard to play? Will he play this week..

Ebinger performing decently for Willy VFL.
Dawson a few early VFL games but didn't do much, so could expect to see him playing.
Williamstown have the Bye this week. Bad luck Ajax. They also cop Willy on their next Bye too.
They don't have any other listed VFL players..
6 Western Jets boys who have been playing NAB league or U19s.

Weak Prem C comp this year, I agree.

FWIW actually for the past 5 years a B grade side has double dropped to D1.

The double-drop has only happened twice in the past 5 years? Three if you include Werribee quitting the league after dropping out of B.

In that time a B grade side dropping into C has won the C grade flag 4 out of the 5 years too.

FYI, Shepherd did play last week and was kept goaless until he went off with knee injury halfway through 3rd, PCL playing up from hurting it earlier in year. Marc opponent did a great job on him while OI found many other avenues to goal in a terrific display after quarter time.

Yep, pretty good assessment I reckon. There has just been those few anomalies that keep us guessing and with OS trips, injuries, players working or taking weekends off, form slumps etc,... the occasional odd result will keep coming - and we all love that!

This round is very interesting esp with Hamp v Maz, Ormond v OC, and OMentone and O Ivanhoe.
I think things will be clearer after this weekend for the bottom end of the middle bracket. I currently rate Marc, Camberwell and Ormond (but haven't seen Ormond play yet) ahead of Hampton who might struggle to keep up with the top 6...AND this is after struggling to understand OC losing to them last week, but as you say, anyone on their day can win! Willy way out in front I think and battle to avoid double drop will be interesting to watch - hopefully PEGS can string some good games together to generate some pressure on other teams.

Tips
Hampton - coz at home
Ormond - in a close one
Willy
Ivanhoe - in form getting better
Marcellin

Old Ivanhoe 17.8 def Old Mentonians 7.7

Tom Brain has said over the years that Round 5 is usually the round where the ladder starts to take shape. It looks like Williamstown and Ormond could finish 1-2 by the end of the regular season, and there’ll be a dogfight between Old Mentonians, Old Ivanhoe, Marcellin, Hampton Rovers and Old Camberwell for 3rd and 4th spot, while Mazenod, AJAX and PEGS could start jockeying for 8th position to avoid relegation to Division 1 next year.

Good win by the Monds in the Timekeepers Cup , behind all day till the last 2 minutes. Camberwell had next to nil support , never seen so much lack of supporters , even at an away game. Has Ajax improved to just go down to the flag favs , or are Old Ivanhoe going to challenge , seeing as they got robbed against Willy in round 1.
Thoughts Max (we should be on top ) Leader.

Bedders, any truth in the rumours that Shaun Grigg will sign on with you boys soon and play the tail end of the season??? The word is he’s a good mate of a coach or club person??
