On Hately, what stands out is lack of leg speed, poor loopy kick, and not great decision making. I've definitely seen an improvement this year but don't see a spot in team for him at this point.

Keays, Sloan, Crouch, Nankervis ahead of him at this point.

Watching Nank, he's creative and seems to have the peripheral vision. Developing quickly and his body conditioning dramatically improved last year. Strong around the hips, stands up in tackles, and gets his hands free. If he cleans up his kicking, he's pushing for an afl spot.

With all that, didnt hately have groin issues early in the year and still managed to finish strong in the sanfl. Solid depth player to keep around, and he might just make it later in his career.

The recruitment of dowling and bond, tells me we are not 100% sold on hately or nank as the big body mid.

I'd love a big body mid, but I think leg speed in the midfield is the biggest need. Laird and Berry have a bit of toe, Shoenberg, and soligo a little bit slower. Our midfield revival hangs on pedlar or rachelle's inclusion into the mix.

Interesting towards the end of year Jones was getting played around the midfield. North game from memory. Be interesting to see what they do with him, with Milera moving back. There's some legs speed we need.

Schoenberg has plenty of burst speed actually..

Rankine was told as part of selling the shift to Adelaide that he was going to get midfield opportunities, he isn't slow.

Seriously what is with the Hately revisionism? He tore the sanfl up, played a few decent games including one very good one as an inside mid, and was then (unfairly) pushed to a wing to accommodate Crouch being in the side, where he did okay but not great. He's a 191cm bottom ager, it's a bit early to be writing him off.

He had two good games in the SANFL, hardly tearing it up. He also didn't have a good SANFL campaign in 2021 either.

Hately had four games > 50% CBA. Of those, the worst game he played was the one he had the highest CBA (v Carlton). Nor was he pushed out for Crouch, seeing the first game Crouch came back didn't impact Hately CBAs. Berry was the one impacted and that was quickly corrected against the Eagles with Hately being pushed on a wing. What I did undersell was that being pushed to a wing was the death knell or we didn't really care about him (I thought we only gave him 4-5 games, not 11) as he did play a handful of good games there before being dropped due to Soligo forcing his way into our midfield rotations.

Being a bottom ager loses all relevance after a lads 2nd season, because the argument is the kid has less natural development pre-draft and is more prone to rapidly rise once they enter an AFL system. Right now, Hately is 4 years in, physically developed (though should probably go from 92 kg to ~98 kg to give him a better chance to succed), and couldn't hold a spot in a really poor side who is crying out for big bodied mid. Unfortunately, his biggest problem is he doesn't have that game in him at this point in time.

I think you could all but write Hately off at this point, unless he puts a lot of work on reinventing his midfield game into being that contested beast.

"Two good games in the sanfl" lol, lmao, even.
He had a groin injury all of 2021, which seems like important context that you're just ignoring.
He was given a tagging role on Cripps in the Carlton game, not exactly an easy assignment.

Considering you're making excuses for his entire 2021 season, the two good games in the SANFL is spot on seeing he did **** all in round 1 against Port. Plus the context of a groin injury is irrelevant, seeing he wasn't that crash hot prior to being shutdown (and for some reason I had memories of Hately playing late 2021, however, he didn't).

The Patrick Cripps that got 35 touches, 10 clearances, 2 goals and 12 scoring involvements in that game? I wouldn't be highlighting that if you're trying to talk up Hately performances, seeing he failed abysmally to curtail his influence and/or to hurt the other way. It was a bad game, no two ways about it and likely cost Hately a niche he could have used to stay in the best 22.

Thats a little harsh.

During that 6 game Purple patch you could have given any AFL player a tranquilizer gun and it still wouldn't have slowed down Cripps. It was an absolutely dominant period.

Rd 1 - 30 touches, 3 goals, 11 inside 50's, 8 clearances, 10 Score involvements - 1 Brownlow vote
Rd 2- 35 touches, 2 goals, 6 inside 50's, 11 clearances 12 Score involvements - 3 Brownlow votes
Rd 3- 31 touches, 1 goal, 5 inside 50's, 6 clearances - 6 score involvements - 3 Brownlow votes
Rd 4- Off Injured in first ate vs Suns
Rd 5- Missed the game
Rd 6- 32 touches, 3 goals, 1 inside 50, 8 clearances 7 score involvements - 3 Brownlow Votes
Rd 7- 35 touches, 1 goal, 5 inside 50's, 10 clearances, 11 score involvements- 3 Brownlow votes.
VS Adelaide in Rd 8- 35 touches, 2 goals, 6 inside 50s, 10 clearances, 12 score involvements - 3 Brownlow Votes

If Cripps didn't finish the season and called it quits after the Adelaide game he would have more Brownlow votes than players from 8 AFL clubs. He would have finished 11th.

Soligo and Sonsie both from Eastern Rangers

I doubt we can get Sonsie over, like Rash/Soli he's contracted until '25
Players move in contract all the time these days, just thought he'd be a nice addition if we're really looking into the future of potentially great mids

Just what we need another 181cm 78kg midfielder...

Maybe his best bud Campbell Chesser...@186cm?

Was hoping he would end up at Sturt with his brother Abe..would be s very hand player at that level

Abe Davis moving on from the Double Blues. At Glenunga next season

On a completely different note, Gollant was drafted as a wingman, anybody think he gets tried in the middle at some point, or is he just too good aerially for it to even be worth it?
He doesn't look to be competing with many other medium talls up forward, but would be competing with Sholl, Cook and Nankervis (maybe Newchurch) on a wing. Think he has a better chance where he is.

Jake Soligo impressing Adelaide Crows coaches with his footy IQ

Jake Soligo is challenging the norm for young players with his footy IQ, and he credits a unique AFL high school program for helping him get ahead.

He might joke that he isn’t the smartest guy off the field.
But on the park Jake Soligo continues to astound Adelaide coaches with his football intelligence.

For most of the young Crows, the coaches give only small morsels of feedback when they come from the ground. They don’t over-complicate it.

But Soligo, who turns 20 on January 25, has challenged the norm.

Just months into his AFL career, he’s the one providing feedback – filling in the gaps for coaches unprompted.

And it’s not just luck.

At the end of year 9, Soligo joined the Sports Academy at Rowville Secondary School.

Soligo actually took footy as a subject, in addition to his secondary education.

Dual premiership player and 238-game Essendon great Darren Bewick runs the footy program as part of the Rowville Sports Academy. Eastern Ranges development coach Mark Fisher also contributed to the program during Soligo’s time there.

“You do two or three periods a day of footy and the rest will be school,” Soligo said.

“We were always just touching footies and playing handball games, I really enjoyed it and it actually made me enjoy school as well. I loved it.
“We did a bit of theory as well because obviously Darren Bewick knows his stuff, having played a few game at AFL level and what he achieved.

“And then we had Mark Fisher while I was there, he was a great coach and knew all the experiences.

“So we did a bit of theory with them and learnt off them, it was great.

“It was great for me and me footy career so far.”

So why are the Crows coaches so impressed with Soligo’s on-field smarts?

“I’m not too sure to be honest, because I’m not the smartest off the field,” Soligo joked.

“But they seem to like my running patterns and what I do with the ball, so if they are happy, I am happy really.”

The Crows recruiting staff couldn’t call out Soligo’s name quick enough when he was on the board at pick 36 of the 2021 draft, believing he wouldn’t be around for the second selection after they took Josh Rachele at pick 6.
Now in Adelaide, Soligo is as thick as thieves with Rachele, with the two and Luke Nankervis – known for his long Jedi braid – moving in together.

“We love it,” Soligo said.

“Josh is a great bloke, he’s hard working, funny. He has a bit of a cheeky side, which we love.

“Luke has Star Wars stuff in his room, he is a great bloke as well he so genuine so a great person to be around.

“He does take the braid out a few times and brushes and all that stuff and plats it up again.

“I wouldn’t know what I’m doing if he asked me to do that (plat it). Occasionally I do pull it when he is beating me in the running.”

Rachele and Nankervis have already given Soligo a nickname at West Lakes he can’t shake – “Fridge”.

“They reckon I have the body shape of a fridge, so I just cop the name Fridge,” Soligo said.

Unrelated to the nickname, Soligo has made changing his body shape a key goal as he looks to build on his outstanding first season.

“I’m trying to put a bit of size on, and I think I’ve done that,” he said.

“I have a pre-season goal to be one of the best on the track every session and the other is to get in the gym and get that strength so I can become that inside mid-forward.”

Even after his impressive first season, Soligo reckons that he doesn’t get that much attention from Crows fans in Adelaide – with Rachele’s star shining bright.

“I don’t think too many people know me. I don’t really mind going under the radar a bit,” he said.
