Pretty standard Max backing in his teammates.
Interesting he said conditions for forwards were poor during Grundy/Gawn 3.0. Bit of excuse making.
Must have seen the BOM updates, can't play big 900k a year campaigner Grundy when there's a bit of drizzle.

Mark McGough’s ‘wet weather specialist’ label was eventually code for ‘slow, fat f…k’.

I think wet weather specialists are guys who can find the ball but cant kick for shit, they are wet weather specialists because quality of disposal matters far less in a monsoon. Luke Dunstan would be a wet weather specialist.

Why isn't our midfield all wet weather specialists then

Coz they have a reputation for being good players? You can only be a wet weather specialist if you are useless in the dry imo.

It’s the equivalent of calling a forward a ‘chest mark specialist’. You’re just a player with half a skill set.

I think it's because our team is so rigid structurally - means we are slow to adapt to changes like wet weather or extreme wind.

On a more micro level it negates our marking strength down back and creates more ground balls to defend which is where we struggle.

We train down at Casey a lot though where it's often pretty filthy weather, so it doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

But our record in wet/greasy conditions this year has been abysmal and I don't think it's a coincidence our worse performances have come in the wet: Brissy at the Gabba was a dewy night game, Worst performance of the year against the Dons for gather round was wet in the 2nd half, Loss to Port in the wet, Loss to GWS in driving rain at Alice and Loss to Cats at the Cattery in the wet.

I have seen Tomlinson repeatedly mark a wet ball overhead with one grab. Something that Lever can't do, and few can.

Was doing some more thinking and I think Brisbane are going to walk the premiership in this year. They’re 8-2 against the top 8 and barring an extraordinary choke will be in the GF. They match up well on the Pies and they should have beaten us at the mcg this year.

Yep it’s all coming together for them and just feels like their time is ‘now’.

Have a sneaky suspicion it’s us who’ll they’ll knock off in the GF too. Superior firepower is going tell at some point.

Love a lot of what we do but the forward lines we’ve been forced to run with. We’re playing Russian Roulette.

Ultimately, it’s the miscalculation of the Grundy trade that’s likely to cost us. Big gamble, big loss.

Been saying this for a month now. Their best is better than anyone's.

How does the grundy trade cost us?

There were no forwards available we could have gone for instead, and we got the forward mix just right then Petty got hurt. That’s just shit luck.

And our forward line ruined with the Petty and Melk injuries . If we had both of them I'd give us a decent chance.

I don’t accept that. We didn’t do our homework on it. Didn’t do enough to cover this base heading into the season. There are always options at trade time if you get creative enough.

Grundy was unfortunately our laser focus. As was erroneously thinking BBB, TMac and Schache would present enough options in addition to JVR.

We almost got lucky with Petty, but that was never in the plan heading into 2023.

2024 there’ll be no excuses for going into the season with a threadbare forward line cupboard. Not with the draft and trade and draft hand we’ve got.

This year, unfortunately, we f…..d it up.

Steadfast in my prediction that Brisbane will lose a prelim at home against one of us, Collingwood or Carlton.

Soft underbelly hasn't disappeared.

Name literally one forward that was available last year that we could have picked up for the equivalent we paid for Grundy.
