There have been a total of 154 drawn games since 1897 from 14,804 games. This is just over 1% of games. It was a statistical anomaly that we've had 3 grand finals in the last 68 years or 4.5% of grand finals. We are unlikely to see another one in our lifetimes..... Just let the replay be. Maybe our great great grandkids will get to see one.

Grand Finals are inherently more likely to be drawn games given the teams will be relatively evenly matched.

Pi55 it off - not even sure why it was ever thought to be a good idea in the first place.

Then get rid of H&A draws as well, they serve no purpose.

Next goal wins, play on until someone kicks a goal. Dont sound the siren until after the goal is awarded (whether it be field or 3rd umpire).

The issue with changing the GF to anything to stop the draw, they MUST also change the H&A games and say goodbye to draws for good, you win or you lose!

I can't believe the replay was ever a thing. Its called a grand final.

noun
  1. 1.
the last game in a sports tournament or other competition, which will decide the winner of the tournament.
    synonyms:decider, final game/match
    "the FA Cup final"

Yep. Probably time to change the GF draw problem. Extra 10 min each way.
But certainly leave the H&A draws alone. Two premiership points each is a fair deal IMO. Not as if the teams get no reward for a draw in H&A. But the GF problem is that nobody comes out of it with anything but a hollow feeling.

And get rid of the bounce while we are at it. Seemingly how we are throwing 120 years of tradition out the window.
Calm ya farm the bounce happens so frequently you could understand them wanting to preserve that tradition. A gf draw is an anomaly and was a ******ed rule made to long ago. We can complain about them changing traditions in sport how bout ones that matter. The shirt front, dropping the ball, diving in head down with courage for the ball etc these traditions of the sport have been butchered and should be complained about. stupidly making a game go for two weeks because a result didn't happen on the day when all they needed was 5 mind either end (it's not like no one would score in an extra 10 mind of Footy) is well stupid.

What issue? The finals series are a knockout competition where the losing team is eliminated so in the case of a draw no one can be eliminated so extra time is needed.

The premiership season is a ladder based competition where 4 points are awarded for a win and 2 for a draw. No need at all to add extra time in season games.

Because it is the game where all others must follow! Its why the draw has always had question marks over it, it is biggest game of the year, it is the GRAND FINAL and yet it has a different resolution to each and every game proceeding it. Having the same rules across the board saves problems when/if it happens. The points system is irrelevant, they change with the laws!

Won't be another grand final drawn until 2050 or beyond, doesn't happen often enough to worry about changing it.
There could be a draw this year AND next year, and the year after that...

It's unlikely but just as likely as any other year. It's going to happen again and we're not going to be able to predict when.

It needs to be changed for a shit-ton of reasons. There's only two reasons to not change, tradition and local fan attendance.

The negatives of a replay far outweigh the meagre positives.

What if the replay was scheduled on Sunday night? This would give both teams an 8 day break and should allieviate any travel concerns of interstate clubs...

Cool....That's great for the teams!

....now how about all the fans of those interstate clubs?

In 2014 we forked out roughly $3000 to travel from Perth so my GF could see her Dockers play in the Grand final and potentially win their first Premiership live.

Freo v Hawks ends in a draw.....reply the following week. Now what? We pay another $2000-3000 to do it again? Or she doesn't go and doesn't get to see her team win the Premiership live for the first time.

It is one thing to continually force one group of fans year in year out to have to go to the extreme on the off chance that their team makes a Grand final. It is utter arrogance and completely obnoxious to suggest that we should be forced to do it again on the off chance there is a draw.

It's laughable hearing Victorian fans bitch and whinge about ticket prices come finals time when they have no concept of how truly disgusting it is for the rest of us.

Play the replay at the interstate club's state. If West Coast play a Victorian team then the replay is played in WA. If interstate vs interstate club then the replay is played at the higher ranking team at the end of H & A state.

Should've been scrapped in 2010 after it became apparent how terrible it is i.e. unfairness, cost, non-VIC teams etc.

2010 replay was also one of the shittest grand finals ever. Any non-Collingwood supporter who says they were glad to wait a week to see that is a ****ing liar.

Haven't read the entire thread so not sure if it's been mentioned but these stats are a tad misleading.

You're comparing statistics from the regular season where a lot of matches are severe mismatches (top teams vs bottom teams). I.e. The probability of a draw in a grand final is higher than the probability of a draw in the regular season due to the theoretical "closeness" in quality between the two teams playing.

In other words 1st vs 2nd is more likely to draw than 1st vs last so the stats aren't really applicable and we can't really confirm a "statistical anomaly" as you put it. Perhaps we have had less drawn grand finals than should be expected..?

Five minutes each way after any draw, home and away or any finals including the grand final.
Extra ten rotations.

May as well have it identical for every game of the season.
Teams may get some practice during the season, as wel as officials,tv stations, etc etc.

Sit at home and watch the grand final on TV like the rest of the 99% of footy fans and let the other 1% have a chance to go, you paid to go watch the game of footy and that's what you got.

Draws are apart of the game of AFL, there is a chance albeit very slim that it can happen on grand final day, deal with it.

What other 1%? You mean the 1% that live in Melbourne because it's convenient for them?

No, we paid to watch the ****ing title deciding game.

Would you pay 3k to watch a meaningless home and away game? No you wouldn't.

Plenty of interstaters would miss out on going, gives them a second chance.
