On the ABC they inferred it was a pushed apology from higher up the Hawks chain. They also said that he was probably looking for a reduced fine

For those unaware

Reporter: what did you think of the umpiring

Clarko: I'm not aloud to comment on disgraceful umpiring so I'm better off not saying anything at all. I don't know what the 50m was for

How is it that AFL-accredited journalists are allowed to ask questions that AFL coaches aren't allowed to answer?

Where is the fine for that?

Speaking of blatant provocation, Mick Molloy's favourite thing in the first half of the season has been "that Hawthorn suck."

Don't go asking questions that we think we know the answer, when we cannot be sure we are right.
I think.

This is from Ch7:

I must be super slow, I don't understand what's wrong with Clarko's comments. Confused :(.

He called the umpiring disgraceful

Right or wrong he knows he can't do that.

Jon Ralph also wonders why reporters put coaches in that position in asking provocative questions so soon after a game

I still want to ask why but I think I know the answer. Arrgghh now I'm getting really frustrated with the AFL.

Next time just say no comment, no comment and thank you with big smile to finish the presser Clarko.

He didn't know what the 50 was for

Interestingly I thought was Ralph starts the question with "you were on the wrong side of a couple of decisions yesterday.......

So obviously Clarko was not alone in his thinking although it may have not been around the 50m penalty

The ump told Howe that he told Brand to move back twice - you don't hear that at all in any replays that ch 7 have access to - you would think they would of played it to confirm the call was made. I can't imagine the ump even knowing Kaidens name

The ump told Howe that he told Brand to move back twice
"I told him twice"...you can hear the ump say "Hold, hold"

I think that was what he was talking about. I think the line Fox drew on the screen was bollocks, Brand was okay were he was standing, but he crept in a step or so as Ainsworth kicked.

I didn't think he moved off the line at all

I don't watch losing replays so I'm never going to know

Jonathan brown trying to draw a ****ing line made me want to throw something at the screen so he'd stfu

I replay that bit couple of times, I love Howe's reactions btw :D.

Umpire:"1 metre, 15 gone .... step back 1 metre please Hawthorn ... hold..hold ... priiiitttt".

So yeah rather than calling KB he called Hawthorn.

I'm never going to know
http://www.afl.com.au/video/2017-06-10/aerial-ainsworth-gets-huge-50m-pen-call

@ 19 secs or so.
Umpire:"1 metre, 15 gone .... step back 1 metre please Hawthorn ... hold..hold ... priiiitttt".
So he didn't call his name, then after saying back a metre says "hold". Clear direction!

It was so marginal anyway. Meh. Ainsworth should have nailed his shot, and Duryea should never have allowed that mark to be taken.

I wish Clarko had trumped it with "I didn't call the umpiring disgraceful, I just said I'm not allowed to comment on disgraceful umpiring."

AFL clowns are ruining my enjoyment of football with their slipshod approach to rules and umpiring.

Just To be annoying Mr Lizard does this mean a player can't move at all

As irrelevant as it is, I still don't think he moved towards the kicker

Like you said, we shouldn't have found ourselves in this situation to start with. We had our chances

it was a shit call seems to be the general consensus

You aren't annoying me. I wish I had the official answers though...I sit here most weeks hoping the club takes the umpires to task (ie "seeks clarification") but I don't even know that they do.

Brand moved toward the line of the kicker, almost like he misjudged where the 'corner' of the protected area was.

Pedantic as **** by the ump, the step was as he kicked, it wasn't a play-on situation where any advantage was gained but rules be rules I guess. No issues if applied consistently...if it was for being too close in the first place as per Lotus' account, then that is inconsistent "coaching", and a really late call to boot.

I'd call it a gaff by Brand, should have shown greater awareness. Bigger gaff was Duryea's defensive effort, I mean what was going on there? He was lucky not to get pinged for a jumper hold, he was facing the incoming ball yet still got totally outpointed by a third gamer who took a chest mark.

gah, I'm annoyed now. stupid umpires..."East West, East West" wtf even is that?!

I want to know why they can't be question, they're paid to do a job. **** I'd live a job where I can't be questioned by fellow employers of the company.

They can be questioned and are all the time, by the fans, by the media, and through official channels (ie behind closed doors) if by the clubs.

They can't be disparaged by clubs to the media/public. This is to prevent Mick Malthouse from doing his scone at them every week, and setting the tone for how umpires are then treated at all levels. We need people to umpire, and no-one will (apart from hardcore masochists) if it's open season on them.

There is no transparency in how the AFL operate. They have even discontinued the whistle blowers, where occasionally we would get the umpire made a mistake. They remind me of the gestapo.

The players get criticised by former players and so called journos alike, but there is no accountability related to umpires.

Can the Hawthorn Forum start a Match Replay Archive thread like there exists on the Pies Forum and the Carlton Forum and I think Melbourne too. They contain links to replays of their games.

I use their links to re-watch games involving Hawthorn.

What's wrong with this picture?

upload_2017-6-13_14-52-18.png

OK, different code. Playing strip has been white with red V. Currently reversed with a little extra design.

But I still have real trouble associating the Hawks with these colours.

The things we have to live with.

That replay of goals with the pen and the music playing in the background makes me think I am watching early 90s rugby league coverage. And that isn't a good thing.

If it makes you feel any better - Mick Molloy is an unfunny campaigner who was blessed to be held up by numerous colleagues over the years who were all much funnier than he was. Now that he is the 'funny' one on The Kick and MMM it is painfully clear how woeful he is.
