what were the honest thoughts on cumming today? first half looked quite good - very nice kicking but after HT was he even on the field? His TOG was 79% - but unsighted

I noticed him up forward late. Didn't do much though. GWS will be fine without him. What will he add to the Crows? Not sure.

Coming back from injury so may have run out of steam.

Hope we land him.

Assuming we finish the trade period with Cumming and ANB as our only significant ins (along with pick 4), this is how I would line up:

Michalanney Keane Worrell
Cumming Murray Hinge
Sholl Crouch Dawson
Rankine Walker Thilthorpe
ANB Fogarty Rachele

ROB Soligo Taylor

Nankervis Keays Curtin Berry

SUB: Dowling

*Dawson plays wing, half back and midfield. Is used in midfield in spurts. We will be a much better team once we don't need him in the midfield and can utilise his outside strengths.
*Nankervis is part of wing and back line rotations.
*Keays small forward rotations
*Curtin helps rotate the tall forwards. Would also use on wing if needed.
*Berry part of midfield rotation. Main aim is to avoid having Crouch and Berry in midfield together, particularly in centre bounces.
*Rankine utilised in midfield in spurts. Rachele also used in spurts.
*Pick 4 hopefully coming into the side quickly. Maybe for Berry.

Laird and Smith in SANFL. As is Murphy. Finally. Hopefully. Of course I fully expect that all 3 will play round 1, most likely in place of Taylor, Nankervis and Berry.

Early days...

B: Laird, Murray, Keane
HB: Michaelanny, Worrell, Hinge
C: Sholl, Soligo, Cumming
HF: Rachele, Fogarty, ANB
F: Walker, Thilthorpe, Keays
R: O’Brien, Dawson, Rankine
I: Nankervis, Crouch, Curtin, Pedlar
Sub: Taylor
E: Butts, Jones, Berry

But we should be looking to manage around 30ish players through the season.

Tex to play around 2/3rds of games... so we can mix up Curtin's role.

Edwards, Ryan & pick #4 debut & hopefully play plenty of games.

More of Bond & Dowling.

Hopefully Milera can get an injury free run.

On paper a side like that should be contending for finals. Geez our coaches are hopeless.

Well now that Cumming’s confirmed

Need Laird to have a Smith 2024 arc (hopefully quicker) and get overtaken by our younger talent. Otherwise, I like how the team stacks up

Pedlar/Milera/Berry/Bond/pick 4 should all be varying levels of chances, too

Hopefully the Peatling rumours are true, he’d add even more to the side

I didn’t pick Smith in my 2024 Round 1 team because the writing was well and truly on the wall for him based on his last 2 months of 2023, and this time I’m not going near Laird in the 2025 Round 1 team for the same reason.

B: Hinge - Keane - Worrell
HB: Cumming - Murray - Michalanney
C: Nankervis - Soligo - Dawson
HF: Rachele - Walker - Neal-Bullen
F: Keays - Fogarty - Thilthorpe
R: O’Brien - Crouch - Rankine
Int: Curtin - Taylor - Sholl - Pick 4
Sub: Dowling

Emg (from): Edwards - Pedlar - Butts - Cook - Milera - Berry - Ryan - Bond - 2nd draftee

Depth only: Strachan - Laird - Smith - Schoenberg - Jones - Murphy - Borlase - T Murray - Burgess (assuming Burgess actually has a contract) - Gallagher

No longer at the club: Himmelberg - Hamill - Gollant - McHenry - Parnell

Notes:
1) Butts vs Keane is a fascinating battle. We can’t play all 4 of Butts, Keane, Worrell and Murray in the same side IMO. I actually don’t love Butts being the one to miss out, but the recovery from another surgery just puts him a bit behind the 8 ball initially for Round 1.

2) Walker plays in Round 1, assuming the game is in Adelaide or Melbourne and he’s 100% fit. I’m basically not putting him on a flight to any other city for the entire season, unless it’s a final and he’s still a viable selection by then.

3) all of the emergencies I have listed have enough upside to be considered seriously for Round 1 if they have a ripping preseason, so there’s a few spots up for grabs, most notably those occupied by Dowling, Taylor, Keane, Curtin and Sholl.

4) Nankervis moves to a wing, and Cumming goes to half back. This is a more natural fit for both of these players IMO. Cumming was shunted away from a HBF at GWS due to them having arguably the best attacking HBF in the league in Whitfield back there (plus Lachie Ash). Nank to me looks a more natural wingman than defensive half player.

5) I’ve got Dawson on the other wing. Realistically the guy can play anywhere. I don’t want to name him in defense because we have a ton of medium sized defenders. I don’t want to name him on ball because let’s face it, Rankine has to start there, Soligo is another dynamic option in there, and Crouch’s uncanny ability to gather and handball complements those two nicely. Why not try Dawson alternating between a wing, half forward and stoppages?

For me, there’s just something about Taylor that screams “class”, and Curtin is a freakish prospect so we should just prioritise getting games into those two above all of the other “fringe” options - I can’t budge on either of them.

I could, however, easily be talked out of picking any of Dowling (who really cares too much who the sub is - Berry isn’t bad in that role if we’re getting specific), Keane (Butts might outplay him in preseason and grab the spot) or Sholl (vanilla pace, no kicking penetration, no tackling ability but improved sharply in 2024 and deserves to be well and truly in the frame based on that) though. I’m absolutely drafting a mid at pick 4 and putting them straight in the Round 1 team and that’s another non-negotiable. If we draft someone at pick 4 who isn’t ready to play in Round 1, then it was the wrong choice. Our midfield is our main weakness as a team. It’s a strong midfielder draft in the top 10. Not a difficult equation.

A fully fit and in-form Milera and/or Pedlar would make for a selection headache or two. Much like Butts though, coming off surgery, I’m sending them to the SANFL for at least the first fortnight.

Edwards, Cook and Ryan have a lot of tricks that could help the team if utilised correctly.

I still really want to see Cook given a 5-6 week block of games playing 75ish% wing at AFL level (he’s maybe played 2 games with a percentage approaching that there ever). If he fails in that role, he is relegated to depth only, but don’t relegate him based on what happened when we played him out of position.

We simply must debut Edwards at some stage in 2025 and alternate him between half forward and midfield stoppages. Let’s see what he can do. Continuing to play guys like Laird, Murphy, Smith and Jones ahead of Edwards would be blatant stupidity.

Ryan is a genuinely exciting prospect who exceeded expectations at SANFL level in his first year, but his chances of debuting in Round 1 just took a hit with the Cumming acquisition.

Injuries will play a huge part in all of this - there’s virtually no way all players listed in anyone’s 23 will actually be available for Round 1 - it’s unavoidable.

I have the following 3 wishes for 2025.
1. ROO out.
2. Nix sacked.
3. Board to be changed, both in personel and the members to have the ability to pick the entire board.
Too early for rd.1 teams.

Here's where I figured they could start round one, though you could slide the positional magnets around.

Has to be close to the best side we could put out for sure. What makes it really work is that Walker can assume the key FF role when TT chips in to help out in ruck to give ROB a break and we don't lose our structure and then Tex can rest and we have some creative goal kickers on the bench to go smaller.

I think this is very close to it. Suspect they still pick crouch ahead of taylor. The rest is probably right unless we snag someone else. And correctly berry nowhere to be seen. So why did we extend him!
