Man we have to do something with Lobbe, he has no confidence at all and made Hickey look like Goldstein, God know what Jacobs will do to him, im just not sure what the answer is, it would be ok if he was doing something around the ground but he is doing zilch. And who is Jarman Impey? becasue he doesnt play for port. Impey is suffering from being played too early at AFL level instead of him first finding his feet at SANFL level, he's like a dear in headlights with ball in hand, much rather Toumpas, Oshea, Young or Calhoun

St Kilda are well coached. They were smart to sign-up Richardson. Our list is more talented but they pushed us hard for 3 and a half quarters.

The Saints set-up well from defence. One or two defenders would sit behind the pack going up for the contest. If a St Kilda player took possession one of the players hanging back would sprint by to take the handball. They were off and running before Port could react.

It was frustrating to see St Kilda get behind our defence so regularly. Even in the last quarter you could see one or two St Kilda players in their forward 50 without a Port player in sight. They just couldn't execute like the earlier quarters. Tiredness was a factor.

The high press can break down when the opposition is dominating the contests, like St Kilda did for quite a bit of the game. Why not switch to a more defensive structure if the opposition is kicking too many easy goals.

how sloppy were our hands today? and our kicking wasnt much better. You dont mind kicks being turned over when they are made under pressure, but when they are simple passes its just not acceptable. Lastly we have to learn to get hands first on the ball, to often we get beaten up with the contested ball, simply not going in hard enough or fast enough

Disagree. Did some great things today.

FWIW Hinkley at the post game said 58 of their 62 points to half-time were from our turnovers. I've got West Coast/Brisbane on in the background now and it's probably an equivalent game IMO. Brisbane are doing well but West Coast are completing basic foot passes and handballs and at half-time are 39 points up.

That's it. St.Kilda are reliant on mistakes, some of them were their pressure most were our rustiness/stuff ups. We can fix that and I expect we will.
When we got our game plan and structures down late on, it wasn't a contest. Some of that was St.Kilda ran out of legs evidently but their game plan with the cap will end in tears a lot this year I feel, but most of it was our boys finally settled down a lot.

Impey showed more ferocity, intensity and defensive effort today than the players you listed (Young aside) have shown in their entire careers.

BEST
Port Adelaide:
R.Gray, Wingard, Hartlett, Ebert, Westhoff, S.Gray
St Kilda: Steven, Armitage, Hickey, Ross, Weller, Fisher, Newnes
I known these aren't your votes Smithy but I can't believe Hombsch wasn't in our best. He was only quieter in the last quarter because the ball wasn't down that end. Pittard was also very good.
Boaky was suspiciously off the boil today, hoping it was nothing more than that.
Haven't looked at Neadeys stats but he impacted the game and worked hard.
The boys fitness was really evident in the last quarter, I think it won us the game.

eagles are 79% de at the half, we had 66% for the game.
Fix our disposal and ridiculous turnovers and you change the score by probably 4 goals each way, but we've been saying that for a long time.

I think I may have called Dixon Butcher Mk II
Don't worry I was saying similar at the game. And prior to that in his NAB Cup game. The only time I've ever concentrated on him before was in our Gold Coast game last year when we pretty well knew he was coming to us. There he was a completely different player, he led to the ball, he took marks, he kicked the goals FFs kick, not gimme ones - welcome as they are.

5 goals they scored by really bad turnovers....then the rest by our bulls*** set up allowing easy goals out the back...
It was really noticeable how high our defence was playing and when we lost possession made it easy for the Saints to smash us over the back.

1000 points to the guy behind me who was constantly ragging on Pittard.

AWWWW, GEDDIM OFF KICK INS.
AWWWW, SEE FAR KEN PITTARD. SHIT. FUUUUAAAAARRRRKKKKKK!

Pittard takes a good mark, plays on and hits a target.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUTTARD!

Then the silent fat old guy wearing op shop clothing who was silently fist pumping saints goals, we started to kick away and he silently slinks out with 10 to go. BOG.

When Ebert lined up for the goal that eventually broke the deadlock and began the avalanche, I said loudly "Come on, you are an Ebert. You kick these."

He kicked it, received knowing nods from people around me. **** I love knowing nods.

Really, really noticeable. They kept at least 4 players up forward for most of the first 3 quarters. It was bold coaching but a long kick past halfway meant they were able to run overlapping to goal. I was going crazy. Finally from late in the 3rd we manned those players up. Had we held the ball up forward it would have been different, but we routinely dropped marks or stuffed up passes and were slowly committing footy suicide.
