Wil Powell genuinely should get a rising star nomination after that game

There has been a few good games from possible nominees this year.

Powell did a lot of good things but also gave away 2 goals with completely unforced errors.

He only had 10 possessions twice last year
23 possessions and a goal
Breakout game for Wil

Amazing game from Swallow. Never seen him be as influential as that.

Fiorini put us on his back in the last quarter in the midfield. Just needs to sustain that ouput across the entire game.

Powell generally very good but those really dinky kicks off the left going into the corridors are something he needs to get out of his game. It's good he's trying that but you've got to pick he moment. Both of those led to Saints goals given they were direct turnovers.

I'm not as convinced that 2MP should have gone for goal. It's a set play that we have done before (see Bulldogs in JLT) and it very nearly came off. I guess though in hindsight you take the shot and just hope you don't kick it OOF.

Witts and 2MP good today I thought. Witts got more possession around the stoppages which is something he needs to work on.

Overall just much better heart than previous years. We came out breathing fire in the fourth quarter whereas last year we would have just rolled over once an opponent got 2 goals up or more. We aren't going to win many games this year, but matches like that is what the culture and backbone is built on. Keep the percentage high and good things will come. See Brisbane last year.

Heartbreaking loss but I can take solace in a few things...

  • We fought until the very end and we didn't give up when things got tough.
  • Dave Swallow is the captain we need. Someone needed to step up early in the fourth quarter to keep us in it and Swallow was the man.
  • Ballard was exceptional. Can't wait to see the kind of player he becomes in 3-5 years time.
  • Sexton is a very dangerous forward who can kick goals from anywhere. Re-sign him ASAP!
  • We finally look fit enough to run out a game.
  • We weren't shaky with the ball in the fourth quarter. Most of the time we made the right decision with ball in hand.

This is the type of performance we can build on. Onto to Freo at home next week!

Yep. It was set up play. I still think Wright should have a go. If he scored only one point still it would tie the game and we would have them under pressure during kick-in. Next time :)
I guess in hindsight I agree but we had taken a few marks earlier in similar positions. I thought there was a lot more time when it happened as well.
