It was disappointing but not unexpected. I was wary of this one all week. WCE absolutely dismantled a similar side to us in GWS (fleet of run and gun midfield jets let by a top ruck division, elite full forward, most of their scores come from rebound/slingshot) last week and they would've been emboldened further by the subsequent Giants win over Hawthorn.

Thankfully, as with the Swans shock loss to the Dogs and the Hawks slip at Spotless, we're only one game back from where we want to be. Plenty of time to right the ship.

Absolutely. We are obviously not quite right at the moment. There may be many, varied reasons for that (injury, a psychological dip, strategy tweaks not quite working, etc, etc) but there is time for correction.

Not really sure what you're trying to say there. One sentence you say they were in disbelief 'cos they "couldn't manage a win", the next sentence you say they were in disbelief because they didn't get an "easy win". Which is it? Are you suggesting West Coast are a better side than us or do you think it was because the players disrespected/underestimated West Coast and therefore didn't have the right psychological approach to the game.

FWIW, I agree with what Chad was saying. We failed to pay due respect (attitude/mental/psychological) and it cost us.

Either I believe that or I would have to have the alternate position that our team are not as good at football as we may have believed. I still think we're pretty decent.

Also as a fourth gen, 40 odd year supporter, yeah, I do expect to win games like that. I also expect the players to be switched on for 120 minutes. FFS, our motto was previously "Expect To Win". I do and I make no apologies for that. I don't expect to win 'cos we just roll up though. I expect us to win because we have ticked every box in preparation. Players don't fill the stands and supporters don't kick the ball.

Generally when you are beating an opponent, and end up losing in a close one, you would be in disbelief. You know, thinking what did you do wrong, what didn't you do more of, what could you have done...you know.

I never said they underestimated the Eagles. That's what others are saying. Not what I'm saying.

No, we didn't fail to pay due respect. We failed to play our brand of football, our game plan, consistently. We have been inconsistent, hence our position on the ladder, hence our shit percentage, hence our win/loss ratio....

Top of the agenda at Alberton this week will be re-establishing the consistency of behaviour that Hinkley has preached the importance of every day for the past two-and-a-bit seasons.

"We've been able to get through to three-and-three with a bit of luck, and a bit of method at times, but we haven't had the consistency of behaviour that we'd like to see," Hinkley said.

"It's just a little bit of attention to detail, willingness to consistently turn up.

"It's a hard ruthless game that we play in, and the boys haven't been able to back it up consistently enough over the journey."

"We've been pretty good, but we haven't consistently backed it up."

I trust, and put more faith in to the words of the head coach over the angry ranting of supporters on the Internet.
It's not about not taking the opposition seriously, it's about not doing what we know we are good at doing to win games and doing it consistently week in week out. As I said in a few post already, people should get a grip and calm down, the sky isn't falling. We've hit a stumbling block, we will over come it.

Yeah I was concerned about this one all week too. As soon as they kicked the first I knew it was going to be a tough one for us.
The race for top 8 and even top 4 is still very much wide open. Look at last season: Port were 7 and 1 while Freo were 4 and 4. Freo corrected their mistakes and charged home to grab fourth spot.
The effort was clearly there, 92 tackles is great. The run and gun has been there (in patches), seen against North and the Hawks in the first quarter. The individual brilliance from players has been there. The individual pieces are still there, we just haven't been able to put the whole package together yet.

Could tell from the moment I walked in the ground during the second quarter that we were flat. Pittard didn't have a great game, Westhoff hasn't done anything all year. Gray was good but I think that error during the 3rd or 4th quarter where he looked as though he wanted to take a snap at goal but tried to do too much and ended up handballing straight to a West Coast player summed up the night for mine. Loved Ah Chee's input late in to the game, he deserves a start next week.

In: Amon (sub)
Out: Westhoff

I didn't see the game, so didn't see how bad it was. However, we seem such a bipolar mob on here. When we're winning, we're on the edge of going unbeaten. When we lose, we'll never win again. It's something we justifiably ridicule the other mob for.

In short: it is never as bad or as good as you think.

Spot on. Not every game is a referendum on your contender status - it's the body of work. Didn't we get reamed by North by 15 goals in 2004?

Went round to the 'friend's house to watch it on Fox Footy Active. 10 minutes into Q3 I was expecting to wake up and find Patrick Duffy in the shower.

Very disappointing.

Felt a lot like melbourne last year. A game we were expected to win but just couldn't get going for a number of reasons. A mate mentioned at half time that it seemed like every bounce, shanked kick etc was falling to one of their players but I guess that's what happens when your workrate is up.

To top it off, some spud in front of me in bay 134 didn't make a sound all game but threatened to report me and a mate for saying "f yes" when Monfries goaled late. That never would have happened when we were getting 15,000 crowds.

Like most people on here, I'm disappointed with the result yesterday - but the season is long and we have time to get our act together.

My observations/two cents worth on the game:
- Krak's delivery by foot is one of the best in our team, and I think the further he's played up the ground, the more damaging he will be. I'd like to see him stay in the midfield while Polec is out.
- Under pressure, Mitchell's disposal is one of the worst in our team. While you can't question the guy's work rate, the number of times he just throws the ball on the boot in traffic with those high up and under kicks shows a lack of composure that wont stand up during finals.
- Arch deserves to play a full game this week to show everyone what he is capable of. That monster handball on the wing in the last quarter was "delicious".
- Was excited to see Matty Lobbe take a grab and slot through that goal in the 3rd quarter. To be a truly effective ruck combination with Paddy, he needs to be able to drift forward like that and hit the scoreboard, especially when he is being beaten in the ruck like last night.

I can only assume that he was the controlling umpire when McGovern blatantly and intentionally tripped Gray in the goal square at least 5 metres away from the ball when Gray was running into what would have been an open goal. Play on. :drunk:

I don't whinge about 50/50 umpiring not going our way, I only whinge when we don't get obvious ones. That was an obvious one.

I was yelling at the telly during this. On the telly it looked a free kick for tripping and I was surprised we got away with it.

Looking at the GIF though it does seem that McGovern made contact above the knees and Grays momentum spinning McGovern around makes the contact seem lower.

I don't think Gray's "Dean Cox impression arms" did him any favours in getting the free either.

I think this one might light a fire under your blokes the same way us getting destroyed by Freo seems to have got the playing groups heads screwed on at West Coast. Brisbane could get a hellacious flogging this week.

Free kick every day of the week and on any planet. Except if you are a tight permed **** wit umpire.

Sydney were 3-3 last year, finished top
St Kilda were 3-3 last year, finished bottom

Not sure what that says, except anything can happen from here.
I don't think we have played a solid 4 quarter game in a long long time though. You can still tell when we aren't on in about 10 minutes, which is a relic of the choco days. These days at least we compete when we aren't on but we need more composure.

It's getting run over at home by a mid table standard team that irks. In 2004, despite that loss, our home ground was still a fortress. Sitting 1-2 from our three home gams is what really gets to me at the moment.

We had a stack of injuries and some late outs from memory in that game. Plus Norf+Etihad = Blow out.

Since our 8-0 start at the venue we've gone 5-5.

W: Melbourne (scraped home), Carlton (destroyed), Richmond (destroyed), Hawthorn (upset), Adelaide (solid)
L: Adelaide (upset), Essendon (upset), Sydney (underdogs), Sydney (upset), WCE (upset)

Not great reading.

• They will enjoy the game day experience free from disruptive behavior, including foul or abusive language or obscene gestures.

Of course it didn't happen to you when we had sub 20,000 turning up.
You could pick almost anywhere at AAMI to sit and 9 times out of 10 you'd be sitting alone.

I understand mate but it was the smallest incident - a slip of the tongue by my mate and this guy decides to open his mouth for the first time all day with a minute to go and have a go at him causing me to miss the next 30 seconds trying to defuse the situation. Bizzare end to a disappointing day.
