sad to see Peter Temple died. He was a great crime author and whilst Jack Irish's father played for Fitzroy, Jack persuaded the 'Junior Supporter's Club' (average age about 80), to start to follow the Saints. Temple was a Saint's supporter

Sad news.

My favourite Australian author.
I introduced him to many of my American friends.
Took a photo of Pellegrini’s and sent it to them.
Also did the same with the front bar at The Windsor.

Although originally South African, he wrote with a truly Australian voice.
And what captured me was his choice of St Kilda as the successor club to Fitzroy for the Prince of Prussia old guard. Only someone who truly understood Melbourne culture would have made that selection.

No more Jack Irish novels.

Vale Peter.

What's people opinion on Jordan Peterson
I like him. He speaks to me as I have a psychology degree and social science degree and noticed a lot of the problems he talks about while I was studying with universities so am not surprised he has a large audience.

He’s pretty brave to take on the identity politics wing of the left in this day and age as they will try and destroy your reputation by calling you any number of things if you speak against them but from his following you can clearly see that people feel deep down that they are having to conform to a certain orthodoxy in their everyday speaking so no surprises that someone like him has gained a following.

For me, this cultural war is the issue of our times, with algorithms becoming more complex, being on the verge of AI, monitoring on the internet and in the west religion being replaced by a mixture of pop culture/the internet, it is a really dangerous combination (almost Orwellian I'd say).

This article, from a left-wing activist decrying the puritanical strain of social justice and how it bullies people into submission like a bad cult sums up a lot of why someone like him that speaks out is popular: https://www.autostraddle.com/kin-ae...-me-from-the-church-of-social-justice-386640/

Likewise, this excellent Norwegian documentary on the gender paradox that examines the phenomenon that sees that the more equal a country is, the more genders choose traditional gender employment options. Why this documentary is interesting is that Peterson pretty much says exactly what this balanced documentary does but gets pilloried for it. That tells you how extreme things have gotten.

Some knowledge being dropped right here. Thanks NH.

Hey guys, we've decided we feel bad about being unreasonable in the Carlisle trade so we are going to do the right thing and take him back and you can have Aaron Francis.

But you owe us one ok?

Jokes aside I hope Carlisle tears it up this year. If he plays at his best he is faaaaaarking amazing imo. (carlisle that is, not Francis but obviously I want Francis to turn things around).

Yeah we are in interesting times. Religion is now like a buffet of spiritualism, politics is depressingly like a team sport with little actual policy direction outside corporate capitalism crusades to take control of the worlds economies. Inequality makes people more desperate to find a cause for the feeling of malaise setting across the western world etc. People like Peterson seem to have answers and with the internet offering a billion voices, people with a sense of self confidence and an ability to criticise the system in a coherent way become messianic almost.

The left has lots wrong with it and papers over cracks that appear in their arguments but the right is generally supported by people who have ill intentions rather than a greater good agenda.

There was a good show on the other day on Four Corners about Big Australia. We are currently addicted to bringing in heaps of immigrants, about 30000 are refugees and 300,000 or so are just immigrating for lifestyle. We don't build infrastructure to support it but want the constant growth it offers. You have a bizarre situation where the left can't criticise the system with out upsetting the orthodox thinking and the right want the financial growth that it offers the developers and corporations that want constant growth, so it goes on with nothing said until one day it will cause social fractures. So the government scape goats the refugees and we have a villain to peg the issue on.

I think anyone that thinks out side the orthodox thinking of the time offers something but you are probably best to not follow anyone with a blind reverence. Like religions, academics don't have all the answers even if they sound like they do.

Is this the trade that David King says the Saints got done over on?

Thoughts on Ben Shapiro?
One of the brightest stars of alternative media and the Thug Life series is hilarious.
The guy takes on all comers, in fact prefers to speak to people who disagree with him which is super rare.
He understands the trivium of grammar, logical and reasoning better than any political commentator virtually on the planet.
So you could say I'm a fan.

Good to hear. I also rate him extremely highly. He takes on the left bullies & backs up his arguments with straight undeniable facts. And facts don’t care about your feelings...lol. Future US president imo

Peterson's as level headed as they come. He has appeared on countless left wing talk shows/news outlets and the way he conducts himself is first class.

Shapiro is much of the same. Both of them debate facts not feelings and the left hate it.

Long videos but enjoyable!

I love how Ben picks apart Piers. It’s like watching a Floyd Mayweather fight.

To me these guys are strong salesmen for the alt right, but they still have their own orthodoxy of thought. It's easier to pic apart others stupid beliefs than come up with your own cohesive planning. Abbott and Trump are both excellent examples of people who cut through to the people who don't like the thought paradigms that the left have pushed. Neither really have much to offer as far as their own answers go but are good at arguing what's wrong with others.

It's actually pretty interesting that there is a push towards the alt right, to me it's more that the financial system seems broken and people are looking for people to blame.
We all have thought paradigms that we struggle to look outside of. I have a cousin who is into food ethics, it's interesting when you look at how different cultures see different animals, in parts of Asia eating dogs is considered normal, others whales, while muslims and jews won't eat pigs and hindus won't eat cows. All of them believe it's logical and reasonable but don't see anyone else as being rational about it. Peter Singer got ripped into for suggesting that if a dog was to have sex with a woman it wouldn't be animal cruelty which it is considered under the law. There are heaps of thought barriers we put up, exposing others limited thinking or the stupidity of their orthodoxy is actually pretty simple. I remember Bill Maher's movie on religion was like a left version of the picking apart for ridicule something others believe.

The right wing hasn't had a great track record of setting up cohesive societies in the past and I doubt they have any answers this time despite the "sensible" voices pushing their agenda.

i'm a big recent peterson fan. i've started listening to all of his lectures and will probably end up buying his books. i dont agree with absolutely everything he says, some of it I just cant agree with but i find the discussion he generates really interesting.

his overall message of "lifes really shit but you can offset that by finding meaning through responsibility and making sure you make the world a better place by making your self better with everyday" is something that really resonated with me. especially his angle that humans are built to take on load, more than we think. i just wish i had heard this stuff when i was 14, not when i was in my 30s. i know he's not saying anything new, but i feel we haven't really been pushing this idea forward to my generation and the generations after it. instead its felt like the discussion has been around we all should be happy and feel like we are all great. despite all of us knowing deep down its a lie, which just creates more problems.

i'm a history nut but not religious, so his condensed interpretation of these old stories including the bible is really interesting. especially when he presents it from scientific evolutionist view mixed in with philosophy and psychology. super super interesting.

i also like that he's prepared to respectfully speak his mind backed up by his research. again i dont agree with all of it (the red lip stick at work is one that stands out off the top of my head) and i dont understand some of the links he has made, but we need to have differing views. i think i need to do some background reading to try and understand where he comes from. either way i win, i can disagree with him and learn something in the process. what i really dont like is that people seem to get mega offended by a perception of what he is rather than actually listening to what he says. to the point of violence and just being a general dickhead trying to censor it. its really scary and really extreme.

on Shapiro, he really alienates me. based on the small sample i've taken in. his views on Guns and his view on the American health system I just really really really can't agree with and its something i think is part of the problem over there. i lived there for 3 years and have lived it/seen it first hand. his views are very common amongst people over there and i believe its the reason they have the system and the problems they have. however having said that, he should be able to say what he wants and he should be able to discuss it. his opening line about old mate in that interview is spot on. you should be able to discuss the issue without the extremism/bullying.

i just feel we need to work on the extremes right now. gringo explained it really well IMO. we need to talk people away from the extreme right and the extreme left. we need people to become more respectful and stop acting like toddlers when it comes to reacting to the discussion. discuss the topics but dont start attacking people because an element of what they've said has offended you.

the big problem i have with the left vs right debate is that a lot of people here seem to mix them up based on the discussion coming out the states. what they really mean in the states is conservatives vs liberals/progressives. which you can call the left vs right in the states due to the current political climate of the states and the two major parties. however what is lost on some is that trump is heavily influenced by the left. things like protectionism are leftist ideals.

but over here is much more complicated. you could argue that the liberal part is as conservative as the labor party, in terms of its base and its policies. i mean the liberal party right now is self confessed to be run by the "left" side of their party and see themselves as progressive.

another example was in the recent same sex marriage plebiscite it showed something really interesting. the no vote was strongest in the conservative religious areas, which in turn were strong labor voting areas. i doubt many people would have believed that would occur. people in the media seemed to be shocked by it. the discussion points from it should have been stronger:
1) how in the hell did the conservative faction of the liberal party led by tony abbott end up in power, when it's views do not necessarily line up with their base? why is it seen as a bit of a never ending power struggle?
2) why has labor been viewed as much more liberal and why has their policy around liberal issues been less bogged down by that of the liberal party when they have this stronger base of conservatives?

it feels like politics here is not as clear cut with the difference between the two major parties being much smaller than that of the states. it feels twisted depending on the topic/policy
