It's getting to that time of the season again. What do we all think the team will look like come Rd 1 next year?
My team:
B: LRT, C. Bolton, Richards
HB: Mattner, Grundy, Shaw
C: Barlow, Bird, McVeigh
HF: O'Keefe, Johnston, Goodes
F: Veszpremi, White, Bevan
R: Jolly, Kirk, J. Bolton
I/C: Pyke, Moore, Jack, Smith
I may have forgotten some obvious ones.
I think Smith has for the moment cemented his spot down back. Barlow seems to have found his spot on the wing. Goodes is wasted at CHF, but as a pinchitting goalkicker setting up across half forward and pushing into the midfield, I think he'll do well, and has done this year.
I've got Bevan starting as a forward. I'm over him as a defender, he's courageous, he does OK, and he's not as bad as some here say, but Smith has stepped into his role and is already doing it at least as well as Bevo, but with more room for improvement. Bevo got to 6th or whatever it was in the B&F last year when he played forward, kicked a few goals, and pressured (along with Moore) the oppo forwardline, restricting run. Bevo will never be a star, but he's got the tools to be a decent player, and I reckon he'll slot in nicely up forward.
Johnston is perhaps the big in, but if he can get in one or two ressies games this year, put in a big preseason, and stay uninjured through the NAB Cup/Challenge games, he's a big chance as our starting CHF. Given his injury this year was a foot injury, there's no reason he can't have been spending some extra time in the gym building his upper body and improving his core strength. However, his fitness may be down, so while I've named him at CHF, he may be more likely to play FF and let Goodes and White, and maybe Barlow, cover that position.
And I tried to fit Hannebery in, but I wasn't sure where to fit him. Pyke is in in front of Currie because Currie will need to prove himself again IMO before winning a spot. Slightly hypocritical given I've got Johston in there, but Johnston is essentially a direct replacement for Micky O, while Currie has a direct competitor in Pyke who he will have to actively dislodge from the side.
