Review Rd 10 Port vs Collingwood

Travelled over and donned the bars today. Some genius Collingwood supporter yelled in our direction that Port’s argument to the PBs makes no sense as SA was a free settlement without convicts. After suggesting that we could wear them as a tribute to their no. 1 supporter, we also noted that not being settled by convicts is not such a bad thing: “you dumb campaigner”.
interesting and little known fact. sa was indeed settled as a 'free state', not a convict state like vic, nsw.
sounds like a monty pythonesque debate.

You know what, as dodgy as the performance was, there was a time when we would have killed to just fall over the line in a scrap like that. After losing like 90% of close games we played in from about 2014-2019, we've really done a 180 in the last couple of seasons. Unfortunately, the only close game we've lost lately was the prelim.

Horrible game to start. Typical slow starts. First bounce they got the typical easy as **** clearance them the umps just stuck right in with their cheating ****ing bullshit.

This time we didn’t sink into and we fought the ****ing campaigners, and I mean the umps, cause Collingwood didn’t show up once they saw the umps would go into bat for them.

a few port players kept us in it until we smelt blood and fought hard for a win over the umps.

1 point win, I’m not happy but I’ll take it. We’re missing butters horribly. Was the key to our season. Lol at those umpires having to face Eddie, they’ll be afraid to look him in the eye knowing they let him down and didn’t come through with the win.

spp - this year his effort and workrate has been good but clearance winning down (likely spending less time at bounces or what?) and has reverted to a ball butchering turnover merchant. But at some stage today early on he cleaned up and lowered his eyes and we got the high workrate pressuring tackling spp who also can use the ball. Needs to do that all the time!! Was robbed of a few frees from htb by cheating umps!

wines - a good solid game.

Gray - fought hard and kept us in it early. Clutch at times.

ladhams - horrifically beaten by Grundy at times but kept fighting. Still beaten but worked really hard and kept his head up. 4 contested marks tonight? Most by any player tonight for either side.

boak - I barely noticed him to be honest. Tried hard early but couldn’t turn the tide when we were getting spanked. I’m sure he was a big part of our win but I kinda didn’t notice him for whatever reason.

Farrell - one of our best today and prob best 1-2 in the first half. If he wasnt playing we would have been too far behind to catch up and likely fallen to a bad loss. Kicking was very good but his acceleration and willingness to move the ball by running it and then kicking it instead of hand balling it to someone else was insanely effective and like nothing we’ve seen from anyone on our list in a long time. Maybe a healthy rozee (but he prefers running in circles) or Amon (he does it when he’s already on the move) on his best day could do that, but Farrell did it at least twice maybe 3 times and while our midfield was getting spanked. Farrell was able to break away from standing starts like a formula 1 car. There’s no way he’s not worth persisting with. We’ve got to get him to 50+ games.

drew - bit in and out of the game drew. Wasn’t horrific but I’m sure he likely was well beaten too.

Dbj - just when I thought he had turned the corner and we would get Dbj back he reverts to 2021 “I’ve made all-aus already” form. Had a good patch for like 10 minutes but then reverted to a b grade honest trier he’s been for most of this season. that kick to a pies player inside 50 was inexcusable from anyone let alone a senior all aus level talent. Might be the worst turnover I’ve seen all year. Just absolutely stunk. I’m furious at him. At this point Dbj and Hartlett are entirely replaceable by jones and Bergman and what are we losing except $1 million of salary?

alir - excellent game and was super important in keeping us close in the first half. So mobile that I don’t worry when the balls loose, just beats his opponent in the air and on the ground. Who is a better chb in the league right now? Is there one? That non mark call from the umpire was outrageous lol.

Jonas - very good and like Alir strong in the first half when we were in danger of getting blown out. The pies forwards were a total non- factor today.

Burton - some horrific moments early, he’s been a bit off since coming back. Settled as the game went on

McKenzie- very good. Very very good. Beat his opponent every chance he got from memory.
Dixon - poor early but worked into it but still not enough from our star senior key forward

Georgiades- has been a bit off the last couple of weeks. Couple of great moments but dropped sitters he would normally gobble up and just faded so far out of the game he wasn’t in the same time zone by the 4th Qtr. Either needs a break to refresh or needs to be backed in (cause all the talent in the world is there) I don’t know which he needs from the outside.

Bonner - ****. Why have we reverted to playing him as a defender after this wing hff revelation early this year? Bonner the defender is a sometimes good player sometimes horrific bombscare. Bonner the wingman is a nightmare for the opponents defenders.

Rozee - ****. He should be so much better than this. Even if playing him through this injury isn’t hurting his body, I’m positive it’s not good for his confidence

Marshall - some great moments and some poor moments

Houston - long way away from the fit Houston. We need to get him right. Another losing confidence as we try to play him when he’s likely not 100%.

motlop - high workrate as we’ve seen from him all year but with little to no hurt factor. Senior player just doing just enough to hold his spot.

jones - high effort and workrate but some silly mistakes. That kick was kind boggling dumb. Still good from a kid a few games into his career.

Amon - stunk today. Just a shit, shit game.

Hartlett- his opponent didn’t hurt us at all from memory. Totally shut out of it and some of that may be Hartlett, and some (likely most) maybe the insanely strong game played by Jonas / Alir / McKenzie tonight that built a wall across half back that no aerial attack could penetrate. However, he was useless going the other way and offered **** all other than his regular court jester make us laugh out loud (and ask wtf?) moments he’s perfected this season. Just such a waste from a senior player who’s in the leadership group.

I was lucky enough to watch the replay after knowing the result, so had time to brace myself to endure the scrap.

I actually thought we did ok. Many here have previously lamented our inability to come from behind to win. Winning ugly in a game we never were truly on top is a great skill to develop. Yes we’re clearly down on form, but to do that while 7 & 3 and only percentage out of the top 4 is a great place to be.

It was good to see a few of our second tier players lead the charge today - Farrell had a breakout game. Really loved that he improved his intensity around the ball. His ball use is a weapon so if he can maintain >20 touches a game he’ll have a real future at this level. McKenzie slotted in beautifully, and if he can maintain that, should not be dropped. I thought SPP was great too, and if he can build on his form will go a long way to helping correct the deficit we face in our midfield depth.

Boak and Gray as solid as ever (although obviously it would be nice to be able to rely on them less and less by now).

DBJ, Rozee, and Amon in particular were all well below the level we know they can produce. If our players down on form can rebound I still believe we can challenge this year.

Was similar to that game we played against hawks last year, where we were red hot favourites and they jumped us early and we spent the rest of the game playing catch up and just pipped them at the post.

It was a pretty terrible performance overall but we kept at it and slowly got better with each quarter. I’d rather that than the Brisbane game where we got pantsed early and the margin progressively grew as the game went on. We didn’t raise the white flag today.

The second half I think there were some good signs. But there were too many passengers out there today, there were 8-9 players that had really poor games. A good side would’ve made us pay.

Not sure the 3 tall forward line is working?

We need to sort out our first quarters, they are a serious concern. It’s the 3rd week in a row we’ve been smacked in the first quarter.

Can we all make more of a concerted effort to refer to the guernsey as representing wharf pilons please?
I called the jumper “the Prison Bars” in a Port supporters’ Facebook group, and people accused me of racism.

That group was great! I was expelled because I argued Koch should no longer be our chairman. 🙈

I’ll hang onto my chance one in case we need it down the track 👍

Couldn’t watch the game properly earlier as I was at work.
Just watched now and was impressed with SPP, particularly in the last quarter.
Was good to see when he got the ball inside 50 he was confident enough to have a shot rather than try for the dinky pass. Sure he missed the first one but would rather see that instead of some of the crazy turnovers we saw eg Burton.

The worst game I can recall for a long long time. We were absolutely putrid. A "good" side would have dismissed Collingwood by 10+ goals. Can't be bothered watching whatever self-serving drivel Ken will come out with after that shitshow.
Yet no one has beaten Collingwood by more than 30...

I’m not sure if it’s been mentioned but we were the only away side (interstate team) to win in round 10. Please savour this Port fans!

Edit: even the Saints & the Kangaroos were the away side at Marvel respectively against the Bulldogs & the Bombers!

And the ball don't lie! He missed, thank goodness

Thing I don’t get is; they reversed the decision when DBJ pushed Taylor Adam’s to the ground, why didn’t they reverse it again when they retaliated against DBJ? <clearly a rhetorical question>

After the disappointing win, I completely forgot it was Collingwoods 1000th loss. Bought a little joy to my heart.
This and the shit going on at the club (and the Guernsey stuff) meant that Collingwood were DESPERATE to win this game.

It was their last chance to make a statement this season.

hahahahahhaja
