He has absolutely surprised me and hopefully not only does he keep going but keeps advancing. Well done Liam!

Can't help myself responding to anything Jones.
If he produces the game he had against Sandringham some weeks back, jaws will drop much further than they have to date.

That game would have stood up against any opponents you care to put him up against and if he starts launching for marks anytime soon.......... :)

Took a couple of nice grabs Saturday. You can tell he is full of confidence taking them in the dukes rather than chest marks

They were nice marks but when the beast launches, he takes no prisoners.
Bruce was shitting himself having Jones anywhere near him........he won't be the only player feeling that way should Jones clock up the rating.

I think Liam loves being loved. Don't know his background but this has come to mind on several occasions this year, already. Love Liam......it's good. :)

Just caught the replay.
A couple of notes.
Who ever said sumner provided forward pressure is delusional. Bloke was a liability. Fisher not much better. But they are kids so we give them time. (ultimately neither are ready for AFL atm)

Criticism on Murphy's game is absurd. Some people on here are absolute arsehats One of his more well rounded games for the year I thought. Tackled better and used the ball well. Not as damaging on the outside as I would like.

Its nice to see our mids spending time forward! A sign of Depth I reckon.

Kerridge and graham better than I thought after reading the comments on here.

And Kreuz has to be AA. His stats may not be the best in the AFL but He beats his opponent every week. And most of the time gives them a propper bath. Only game that comes to mind is the Freo game which I was critical of.

Minus the reference to other posters being arsehats, I agree with your summation of Murphy's game.
I thought he played well. Sure there was a turnover but he was good across the whole game.

I just wish Murph would draw the opposition to himself more before handballing instead of selling teammates straight into trouble sometimes. Like, I mean, I get it that he's not a physical beast like Cripps and can't really do it like you see Patty regularly doing, but it was quite noticeable at times on Saturday. I'd just like to see him take that extra little bit of time to get/create better options.

Other than that (and weak tackling which I've just come to accept as an unfortunate trait), he works his butt off, which might explain some of the skill errors through fatigue. His outside game would no doubt be better if we had the depth to fully release him instead of him pulling such a workload.

Previous weeks Murphs tackling has been non existent but this week gone he got 9 ..

In terms of Murphy's tackling, he did a good job on the weekend. But in analysis, you have to look at a wider sample to make 'fair' comments.

He started off his career as a little bit inside and outside player. Now he is an outside player due to the explosion in midfielder tallness/bigness...but... that fact alone should not excuse him from tackling as he goes in to the centre bounces...and a lot over his full career. He is also our captain an needs to set an example where if we hit 70+ we go close to winning games...we don't tackle and we lose.

I never look at one game, more seasons and career. It made me go and look at average tackles per game and compare him to his peers. I compared him over his career vs 25 midfielders; not bull inside midfielders, just your inside/outside types, and not all gun mids like Pendles either though he was one i compared him to. There are obv mids who have tackled less (on ave) but I found none of the 25 players I searched on. Murphy was the lowest of them all.

Him laying 1-2 tackles for weeks on end made me think he has an injury so I understood why..but laying lots of tackles on the weekend is more perplexing now as we know he can do it..and he is our captain.

I too thought he was good in the second half...the part of the game i watched. Missed first half. He has been good in other games this season too.

Just hope he can show more of the tackle Murphy. I can bear a player being beaten more than not if they show that attitude. Losing to your opponent but not tackling is very hard to take. It's why I have like Kruezer all along. In or out of form over the years, he gives it hard no doubt.

Hmm. Well I sorted this years top 20 average disposal winners and murph averages more tackles than quite a few of them. Even some "bull-Type"

So out of curiosity what players and years did you use?

Murphy's career tackle average according to Footywire is 3.7. Maybe Footywire is wrong though it does have stats for all of his years. I was trying to compare years of similar players who have been in the system that long. Keep it fair.

I also didn't include half back rebounding flankers like the types of Laird and Docherty. Where does Ross play? Some of them pinch hit as midfielders. Just trying to keep the analysis close.

Honestly, to do the check agina and quote all is a little bit tiresome...i did go through these in 5 mins who all had better 'career' tackle averages (some marginal): Priddis, Sam Mitchell, Cotchin, Barlow, Burgoyne, Beams, Dalhaus....if you force me, i can find 50 more like type midfielders putting Murphy near the bottom of the classification. Dusty did have less.

I didnt bother looking for Danger, Selwood, Boak, Cripps types; we know there is 20 straight up midfielders like that in front of Murphy. Mostly due to size.

Gibbs who over the years we have linked to fairweather efforts phycially..(though, not in recent times), beats him in the tackle average and no one really looks at him as a hard it it type.

Is above not enough to draw some correlation on Murphy's tackling?

He is good at other things.

Really?

I think it's drawing a very long bow to suggest our rebuild lacks depth by comparing our list to the Giants who've spent the better part of a decade sucking on the AFL's teat with excessively generous draft picks and salary cap concessions. This has been the first year they've not had the salary cap advantage and it'll take some time for the effect to flow on as the players come out of contract, the sharks are already circling on Kelly and Shiel.

I suspect a few people watched the first quarter and saw the confirmation they wanted that their personal whipping boy(s) were having a shocker and thats the impression they took out of the game. Kerridge, White, Graham, Murphy... reckon they had more to do with us getting within 12 points than they had with us losing it.

Almost everyone in a Carlton jumper was slow and overly cautious for the first 20 minutes of the game, thats what lost it for us, along with our standard structural inability to score.

You're kidding yeh...???

Bar Cripps, Our best mids are nearly 30, their best mids are all nearly 22.

But those sharks are gunna have to give up top ten pics to get them...

Pies gave up 2 first rounders for treloar.

Kelly and Shiel will be the same.

Once they leave they will get another 4 top 10 pics. Out of those 4, they could get 8 pics if traded out. 8 could be 16... It could go on for decades unfortunately. Take a gun give up 2 x 1st rounders.

Our depth is a blow up pool compared to their Olympic size diving pool. It is what it is...

In reference to the game on weekend, their better players stood up when it counted, ours didn't. Depth players arent gunna get you over the line in tight ones.

Heaven forbid if we some day have to rely on kerridge to pin point a pass for casboult to get a goal to win a game in a final.

Our mid depth / 2nd tier players are basically other clubs rejects at present... kerridge, curnow, smedts, palmer, graham, Pickett, Thomas, brokehorse, sumner, lamb..

We struggled at the start of game last weekend because defensive structure was ripped apart early and then we worked it out after being 4 goals down.

I want to see Jones and ASOS in the same backline. I think he could push Jones to another level.

I'd probably be a little concerned about going too tall in defense though. Maybe Weitering would play better up forward with Charlie and Casboult in good form.

Can't remember having so many tall options in defense. :D

Seriously dude, we kinda agree on everything you just said but you ignored the reason why which puts it in perspective. GWS have been the number one AFL pet since they were formed and we've been buried in the bottom of league priorities. Comparing our team to GWS and ignoring the primary cause is futile.

Yes there has been some self inflicted damage by Carlton over the past couple of decades in the draft, however the differential between Carlton and GWS has the same root as the differential between GWS and pretty much every other club in the competition (other than the other pets). Compare our midfield to Collingwood or Richmond or somebody, not special cases like GWS.

In reference to the game on weekend...

Adelaide are playing finals this year, we aren't. Unless you actually expected us to make finals this year the result was in line with expectation however we didn't let them get away from us after a shocking first quarter, and our team as a whole did a pretty good job to run it out to the end.

Watching Carlton play this year with a glass half empty attitude is a good way to ensure you have a miserable year watching the footy. Almost by definition in a rebuild the glass is half (or more) empty, try to take some joy watching it slowly fill up.

It's something that someone would have photoshopped and got a good laugh from, only 3 months ago...........and now? IT'S REAL. :)

It's great...

Whipping boy to champion ;)

Just saw the match too (inconsiderate mate turned 50 on Saturday...).

Gee we played well, barring the first term. If we played like that against Bitchmond last week, we win the game. If we play with that intensity against the Demons this week, we will too.

One thought: Marchbank is shaping up to be a great player, but am I alone in thinking he gives away a quite a few frees at the moment? Is it his style or simple ump bias towards forwards?

Marchbank does the same. Maybe it because there are no clear targets ahead. I think confidence is a huge factor though.

On SM-N920I using BigFooty.com mobile app

I've been away the last few weeks so not seen the games live.

Commentators say we usually have 2 "spares" behind the ball - logic says when our defenders get the ball we will be outnumbered ahead of the ball.

Could this be causing the "uncertainty"??

I can't help but laugh every time Jones wins a contest. It's so wrong. He has gone from Whipping Boy to modern day hero

That may be the case for now, but he's always had some special tools.
I really feel that Liam may have been his own worst enemy, but being around Docherty, Simpson, Weitering will do him no harm at all.
