Great example is towards the back end of the game when we brought the ball out to Murphy near the centre square from the wing. He spins around and looks for the next pass / runner and sees nothing. You could see the look of exasperation on his face. So of course he kicks long down the line.
this is why premiership winning coaches have elected to go throw a midfielder in the ruck when the main ruckman rests rather than play 2 rucks. extra running power at ground level gets you more numbers in support of the ball carrier.

bad ball movement is less about the individual player skill and more about the options being made available by teammates.

I’ll have to go back and read poster thoughts on the game. I know some people will be spitting chips as a result of what unfolded at today’s game. I know some will try to discuss it in as calm a voice as possible.

The feeling of frustration will run deep. Our expectations were high. My expectations were commensurate. It was another winnable game however the effort required to win is not across the team. The gap between our good players and our poor players was a chasm today. Yet deep into the game the Swans looked shaky and, despite desperate attempts, we sprayed our efforts for goal. The game was killed off by Heeney, in circumstances, which caused me apoplexy. Not an unusual feeling concerning some of the decisions I saw today but I digress.

My brief summation of the game.

Our first quarter was good. We were direct and kicked goals. The misses by Dow and McKay denied us the opportunity to win the quarter.

The Swans didn’t want a shootout and decided to play possession footy in the second quarter. I thought we went defensive and invited the pressure. The modern game loves an extra defender. I don’t. On occasions we worked it into our forward half when the Swans had an extra player. It wasn’t surprising to see the ball rebound into their forward half quickly. It was bitter sweet to see our only goal of the quarter kicked late by Mitch McGovern (candidate for GOTY) who had been sacrificed to play the seventh defender role.

The third quarter was more of the same. We couldn’t win the ball to create the pressure required to get back in the game. The Swans put the boa constrictor squeeze on us and stretched the lead to five goals. To make matters worse McGovern was injured and would sit out the remainder of the game. Then late in the quarter two sensational kicks by the much maligned changed the course of the game. One from deep went straight up the guts and resulted in a goal. The next one was a beautifully caressed kick to a McKay lead. Harry goaded on the siren. Game on.

The last quarter saw us put extreme pressure on the Swans and they got wobbly. Goals to Ed Curnow and Zac Fisher gave us hope. Then a series of rushed shots at goal (except for Cas who rattled the woodwork) missed. I think it was 10.14 to 13.9 before Heeney’s goal which ended the contest.

I must admit I was annoyed as I left the ground. I wanted to talk about the umpiring. Eventually my son calmed me and we discussed how we played, the good players and the poor players. In the end we had too many poor players. In the back half. In the forward half. Most of them were our small to medium sized players who couldn’t impact the game.
Your son is very wise.
Excellent summary Robbo.

If any of the Plowman supporters are decent at editing video footage, please put together a package to convince me of his place in the side. I don’t care for stats. I see him get beaten easily week on week (and have for seasons). I don’t understand his selection (or the fan support for it) when his position should, for balance, be filled by someone who can actually tackle, run and dispose. He is a liability.
Marchbank is the third tall. The other three should be actual effective smalls. He exists in no-mans land.

Totally agree with you on Plowman. He just doesn't seem to put 100 percent in. I've thought this since day one.

with marchbank in the side fully fit we probably don't need plowman. But who's the alternative to him right now?

Not sure you can teach composure. You either have it or you don't.
Horse shit. Composure comes with maturity, fitness and thinking your way through the game on and off the field. It's 100% teachable.

I'm not sure it's tactical. We have been up there with the highest distance covered of all teams so far this year, but I think a lot of that is unproductive running. Not being able to bring the ball back through the middle to anyone who has found space is likely a symptom of that. The question is why we have that occur, and my gut says it's a lack of hardened bodies with AFL experience in the middle. The guys we want to see receive the ball like that are Murphy (but he's seemingly not playing that role to protect the body), SPS, Dow, Walsh, LOB, Fisher etc. They are all very raw still.
It's a combination of all these things, but I can't help but look at guys like Levi, Lobbe, Newman and Gibbons and feel that they cannot pressure to an AFL standard consistently enough, and that it slowly saps energy from the rest of the team.

Picking certain players despite current concerns, obvious weaknesses and alternative options is a tactical error.

Go to a game and you'll see what he does. Compare and contrast that with what Newman does.

I'd be happy to make such a package of video footage every so often if I actually had access to the necessary camera angles to cover what he's doing off the ball.

Me daughter just knocked up a batch of Chinese tarts ..i just smashed 4 and feeling much better ..
When she notices them missing she's gonna be cranky .was suppose to wait until after dinner..

Send some my way if you like. I like Chinese tarts.:oops: sorry, you meant food. My bad.;)

No... I'm sorry but this is not a victory by any stretch of the imagination.

At some stage this has to be called for what it is. A Loss. Not an Honourable loss or Morale Victory.

This needs to sting and hurt and drive the players too will the win.

I am confident that good times are coming and also have belief in Bolton but this hurts. I can see some much in these boys and so much that 'could be.' But we can not get by on talent alone. A lot of boys could learn from their captain on what it means to give it all.

Russell has his work cut out for him in the mental side of things. He has done so well in getting the boys fit. Now we need to work on the basic skills and mental conditioning.
... Is it possible to like something so much you can hate it?

****ing this. :thumbsu:

100% disagree. Sorry.

Was chasing the swans the whole game!
Actually, were weren't at all, that's why we lost. They had no-one opposing them in the centre of the ground, and ran it down to their forward line at will why we struggled to even hit targets around the boundary line. I don't know what our game plan is but it would appear the corridor is off limits... Sigh...

Well I'm convinced!

Good luck with your unmoving, unchanging existence, whereby you possess the same amount of emotional and intellectual reasoning as you were apparently born with. :thumbsu:

Seriously, the kid has played 10 or so games.
Kade Simpson did not have a possession in his first 3 games.
We judge O'Brian after 50 games. I think he'll come good, he is an endurance monster.
Respect your call for patience, but this is silly. We should be judging players after 2 years unless there are significant mitigating circumstances, particularly if they were picked early in the draft without any clear physical concerns in the short term.

Lachie had an OK game: he wasn't in our bottom 3, and that's a good start. What's of greater scrutiny is his willingness to take the game on, and his decisiveness in doing so. He made a critical mistake with footy in hand in the Swans 50 when surrounded by 4 players: he evaded, bought himself space, then fired a no-look handpass straight to a fifth Swans player, so it was something of an 'almost' moment for him.

Another was him streaming towards 50, and getting caught between having a shot and popping it up to the 15-20 metre mark out in front of goal. In the end he split the middle, making it impossible for Harry to mark it. I suspect he was ready to blaze away at goal, and tried to pull himself short, but his raking long kicks on the run at goal are part of why we drafted him. He needed to seize that moment and back his abilities.

Positives:

Cripps: goes without saying.
McKay: is starting to back himself in, once it all clicks for him, lookout!!
Jones: Buddy may be struggling but Jones competed well and can hold his head high.
Marchbank: getting through the game unscathed
Walsh: he's going to be a beauty, makes good decisions with ball in hand and isn't overawed at all.
Casboult: is a big lump of a man & started to play like it and left a few sore bodies in his wake.

Negatives:

McGovern: going off injured,
Simpson: age may be starting to catch up with him as his rebound no longer masks his defensive inadequacies.
Lob/Gibbons/Polson: are struggling to adjust to the intensity and flow of the game, they need to improve their ballwinning capabilities and to find a way to stay dangerous to keep their opposition engaged.
Our midfield is either unwilling or unable to put in the required work defensively, it needs to be corrected by our coaching group asap.
Players panicking with ball in hand: the Swans worked to create an overlap on the spread while we banged it on the boot and hoped for the best, it's poor footy and it hurt today with repeat entries ramping up the pressure on our defenders.

Did you say Lobbe was decent? Wow. How on Earth did we watch the same game.

Polson was horrendous and that is Polson.
LOB just not AFL ready. Needs another 2 years. Gibbons not good enough.

Should be easy decision for next week.

Out: Lobbe, Polson, Gibbons, LOB
In: Kreuzer, Kennedy, JSOS and lets give Stocker a go.

If mcgovern is okay to go for next week then levi has to go.

I have already analyzed the situation but you chose to ignore it and chose to play it personal.

We are not spreading and using the ball - we won the stoppages and clearances (so young bodies is not an excuse) and yet players are stationary to instructions and not spreading. How many times does it need to be explained to you before you get it?

A few things to add.

It is clear we do not spread on the outside anywhere near enough. We made Sydney look fast today and that's hard to do. I'm not a Bolton basher but this is something we have to address if we want to start winning games.

The umpiring was a disgrace and didn't help our cause at all.

Fisher has been reading the paper. Was soft at the contest today and could not run defensively.

Positives:

Liam Jones was outrageously good today.

Sam Walsh is a genuine freak. Love him. I actually don't know how to explain how good this kid is.

We kick those goals and umpires call an even contest... Maybe we win that game. I genuinely enjoyed being there today though. I love our supporter base despite our horrendous last 20 years. We are so loud when we get going it's just a shame we can't finish it off.

Umpires gifted that to the swans
Apart from our lack of accountability, that was the most obvious bunch of gifts I have ever seen. I really wish we could have won so I could legitimately complain about them without being told it's sour grapes ..

When we play on and look for options through the middle we look unstoppable.

I’m 99% sure he shit himself and said go down the boundary in the second because the swans kicked 6 goals in the first. Those days are over. Run and gun or get shredded
you're 99% sure our senior coach shit himself?

Except Cunningham on evidence isn’t in the same continent as Papley and I doubt ever will be.
We desperately need a mid/fwd with pace like that. If the club agrees with you on Cuningham they should be straight into Papley's ear (edit - or perhaps should be regardless).

I have a lot less confidence than you in my ability to predict how good Cuningham will be. To me he's a bit of an enigma
