I could keep going but at risk of embarassing many clubs its time to stop.

Yet no members in the AFL team of the century.. How curious...

Our record winning margin against Melbourne which was set in 1979 which still stands -190 points!!

Was there at the game at VFL park - boring as bat pooh - the only thing that made it exciting was whether we would break the record..

Apart from that there hasn't been too much since 1996 (and to be honest the 4 or 5 years prior to us getting the arse wasn't too flash either)

Only club to win a flag in each of the last 5 decades.

That's a pretty good accomplishment IMO. Love them or hate them Hawthorn is one of the most successful clubs if not the most successful in my era.

Perhaps it's the lack of premierships from my team's behalf but I don't see any point in bragging about flags teams won when you weren't even alive to see it.

It's the Doggies and Saints way. :D

You left out 25 grand final losses.
A record you should be truly proud of.

10 flags in 50 years.

We're pretty happy with that one.

Liked having the greatest winning margin in a GF till bloody Port...

Considering the way we entered the Competition.

For those who don't know, our 30 second Hawks history...

In 1925 North, Dogs and Port Melbourne were going to enter the VFL.

Port was blocked from entering and Hawthorn (ordinary VFA side) entered.

No draft picks or any other sort of help given out. Club was on a hiding to nothing. Took 20 years before we beat Collingwood in a game! Sat in the bottom 3 for years.

Then it all turns around in the late 50s - Thanks Kanga Kennedy.

1925-1950 Hawthorn was far worse than the Bears, far worse than Fitzroy of 1980s/90s, far worse than Richmond 1983-present, far worse than Swans of early 90s.

Yet the worst team in the first half of the century turned into the best team of the second half of the century. Not bad hey?

Not only that - from 92-07 were better only than fro in terms of finals success, but srill the most successful for 50 years.

Tuckys games and premiership records is special too

Hawthorn has probably generated the highest number of premiership coaches of any club in the modern era.

Peter Hudson's record of 150 goals in a season.

Great effort no doubt, but shared with Bob Pratt who played in 3 less games to get the 150.
I suspect Huddo could've gone better in 1972 but he did his knee in Round 1. When his knee went just before or after half time he had already kicked 8.

Well after today the 1929 Machine Team that won 4 flags in a row is still the only team to have a perfect home and away season.

And the club still has the most wins over 112 years and the highest win rate.

Headed the premiership table for 60 years, longer than all the other 15 clubs put together.

I just grabbed what I could from http://afl.allthestats.com/records/ :D

Only team to win three consecutive games by 100 points plus (R7-9 1989 - D St Kilda 119, Bears 129, Richmond 134)

1990 round 1 Hawks vs Cats at Waverley.

I was at the game and if my memory serves me correctly Michael Turner goaled to put Geelong in front early in the 3rd quarter before the massive 20 goal onslaught by Hawthorn.

I cannot find any proof of this so if anyone can then please let me know.
Best I could find was Hawthorn up by 17 points at half time and Geelong kicking 4 goals in the 3rd. I am pretty sure they kicked the first 3 which would have had them in front briefly.

1. Micky Turner retired in 1988.

2. I was at the game and we most certainly did not hit the front after half time. In fact, if I recall correctly, it slipped away from us pretty damn quickly after the long break.

However, you do hold the record for the highest score in the second half, which was against us, but that was in 1986, 25.7.157

Why was Port Melbourne blocked if they were a better VFA side than Hawthorn?

Bad reputation for player and crowd behaviour.
Really quite amazing that the Hawks ever succeeded, Kanga is a true legend for what he did to that club.

Thanks for that, amazing how differently footy history would have turned out. You would think Port would have had a better first 20 years than the Hawks.

A couple of things here.

1. Prahran was closer to joining the VFL in 1925 than Port Melbourne. Hawthorn got in purely because the VFL wanted an eastern suburban presence. Even then, Hawthorn were the second choice after Footscray to come in, and it came down to Prahran and North for the third spot.

2. I think you'll find that while Kanga Kennedy was Hawthorn's first premiership coach, it was actually Jack Hale who set the foundations for Hawthorns turnaround. He coached the Hawks to their first finals appearance while John Kennedy was still a player and was the first to instill the tough physical and professional approach that formed the basis for ongoing success. I daresay he also had a massive influence on Kanga's coaching philosophies.
