Leppa is Head of strategy @ Pies as well as forwards coach, so one might argue he's already proving that he's more than just a line coach. Plus he's the one making a lot of calls from the box while Fly is down on the bench.

Our so-called 'strategy' at the moment stinks.
Voss did the same for Hinkley very successfully

It has to be someone from outside the club. We need new ideas and opinions imo
Grigg is perfect for that imo. He knows the club and much of the list well, but would have developed his own coaching style and ideas at Geelong.

He will be able to combine what he learned as a player at Richmond with what he has learned as a coach at Geelong.

Ask Matthew Knights that question

Or Matthew Voss.

Or Sam Mitchell.

Only Chris Scott & Geelong was able to do it & that was because he left DURING the team was till awesome . Brad Scott literally got gifted the team at its peak

Whoever takes our job on is not taking us on the top - we are near the bottom. We have the oldest list in the land. IT might be appealing in your eyes as you love Richmond and thing bigger is better - but circumstance always trumps size. The circumstances are awful & History says you are wrong.

And you don’t love Richmond do you?

You don’t turn to anyone in particular naming guys already means we are changing what the criteria should be to fit in the name eg Leppa

What we should be doing is first is setting the criteria of what we want at the club and the quality’s they should have

Once that is settled you open it up for people to apply and let them go through that robust process the club has put forward and pick the person who’s values and attributes match up to those criteria that we have selected

We don’t chase anyone in particular, we let the candidates come to us
It’s the process we used to get Dimma in the first place
Very, very nice...all the above appeals to me...

I'm not sold on Grigg, to me it would be like Matthew Knights all over again.

We need someone who wasnt linked to Richmond previously.

I'd also say no to Yze, I just dont think he tasted success enough as a player, in fact the club he played for had no success.

We also do have the benefit of timing
Although definitely not ideal it is good that this isn’t happening at the end of the season and we are potentially on the back foot and competing with a few other clubs for the same candidates and feel as if the club needs to rush in order to just secure a name

As it stands the board have a good month or so to nail that criteria before they even start to have interviews and expressions of interest

We get first look at all the candidates looking at going for a sr coaching gig before other positions Come up like the ones potentially in west coast or wherever else

I wouldn't say very successfully. They made finals twice in the 7 years Voss was at Port, both top 4, and got bundled in both prelims. I feel like Voss is a poor man's Dimma - more of a motivational manager than a master tactician.

From the outside Leppa seems to have a handle on both styles these days.

On the same day Damien Hardwick officially resigned from Richmond, Sportsbet has opened a market on who will be Richmond’s next AFL coach.

At the top of the market is former Brisbane coach and current Collingwood assistant Justin Leppitsch ($4.50) and interim Tigers mentor Andrew McQualter ($7), with Melbourne assistant Adam Yze, Richmond assistant David Teague and Sydney assistant Don Pyke all on the next line of betting at $8.

Of the experienced head coaches other than Leppitsch, Teague and Pyke, Ben Rutten ($11), Matthew Knights ($15), Nathan Buckley ($15), Leon Cameron ($21), Mark Williams ($34) all feature in the market, as do a number of interim senior coaches.

Former Richmond stars Alex Rance, Brett Deledio and Matthew Richardson are all included in the market at $41.

Totally agree...
Making a positive out of a potential negative in disrupting our Season...
Cos it's not a competition for Coaches at the moment!...
Have a head start for a very measured, thoughtful, professional approach in acquiring a new Head Coach!

nah newy never won a flag when he played . big no no for me

we should only look at coaches who won both a flag when they were playing/ and as assistants and reckon the club will do just that like they did with dimma

grigg was there for our rebuild, won a flag, was there for 19 , then was at the scats when they lost to us in 20 and when they won in 22
Yeaaaa however he has proven he can coach with success at box hill , played under dimna , worked with Clarko , quite a resume
Was a very popular Captain too ,galvanising the playing group behind dimna
I’d expect he will still be in discussion at pointy end

Ahaha Luke Meehan is there at $41

The timing factor is incredible. Sure it will make this year a nothing year but it will help us in the long run.

1. Any players who want to move because their contract is up and they want a fresh start can start these discussions now and we can start that as well.
2. Recruiting team could get an earlier steer from the new coach as to what they are looking for.
3. We don't have to rush to get the "Name" on the board.

Who knows it may not even become a nothing year
Mini and the playing group could surprise us as well

We get some continuity in the playing group and Lynch back in the back half of the season we could very much finish between 10th and 7th

Would need a lot to go right but that could also make us an interesting prospect for potential coaches

A lot of the times when coaches leave it’s when the team and list is a complete basket case with all kinds of other on and off field issues to boot, bar wins and losses the club is in a pretty stable position with strong people and processes already in place
