The disconnect a lot of folks on here fall into is that a reputed assistant means they’re capable of leading 45 men. Very few are , McRae is an outstanding example of a contemporary leader and he demonstrated the ability to lead a group by successfully coaching his own team. Most assist coaches have the personality of a bean bag ,,,it’s why they’re asst coaches.
look for leadership qualities , have they successfully coached a team , have they been a team captain. Unless this criteria is a certain tick , don’t mention them , they won’t get a look in , period

The Selection will say a lot about where the club think the list is at
Yes and no , i actually don’t get the boof headed football philosophy that if youre re building a side you go with a rookie coach that has no idea what they’re doing , walking past years of experience along the way ,,, sound ridiculous , coz it is

So true that...and then again I have meet quite a few attention seekers with great galvanising personalities that sought leadership...leadership for them meant 'listen' to me, 'follow' me, 'gather' around me, demonstrating no idea for what a team effort meant unless it was applause for them...9 times out of 10 the best leaders are a combo of saying and doing...dimma has it in spades...B.G. brains and leadership...

One from left field might be Justin Plapp .
Successfully Coaching in his own right at VFL level and is well regarded .
Like Benny is also Ex Penguin ( tas ) local .
Put experienced educators and developers like Andy Collins and chocco around him with a shrewd experienced game analyist eg Pyke ( who already knows the club song well . )

I guess my point is I think we need a coaching group as much as putting all eggs into the one ‘ coach ‘ basket , which needs to come from identifying we need strong development of players whilst having a new but sound tactical game style .

A great listen to rance on SEN comment on Mc Rae and that he saw his as a great leader who has successfully put the right pieces around him such as leppa who is great technically,,, underlines my point that your coach is more a manager

Internal appointment or one of our premiership era assistants returning home.

This is not the time for famous ex coaches. I think we need a semblance of continuity.

I want to see someone else steering the same ship, not someone else turning up with a new one. Someone who knows how the current group ticks.

I think this may be a big factor in which way we go. But wouldnt count out an outside assistant getting the gig if hes a standout through the process that has identified the correct strengths and weaknesses we internally see

I’m going to be honest and say that Adem Yze has a pretty good coaching career as an assistant. All from his Wikipedia article, but:

  • He was Hawthorn’s specialist goalkicking and development coach from January 2012 to November 2014. Hawthorn were elite kicks during this time and he’s credited as one of the reasons for that.
  • From November 2014, he was Hawthorn’s backline coach. Hawthorn then conceded the least amount of points in the following season (2015). They went on to be top 3 in least points conceded in 2018 and 2019 as well. However, they were only ordinary defensively in 2016, 2017, and 2020.
  • He joined Melbourne 2021 as a midfield coach. Melbourne went from having an ineffective and dysfunctional midfield to being one of the best and most organised midfield teams in the competition.

Not only does he have forward line, backline, and midfield experience as a coach - he’s also had success in each of those assistant coaching roles.

I’m not against others, but Yze’s assistant coaching career is quite decorated. Maybe he’d be a good fit for us. Also, maybe he can tell us how we can finally beat Melbourne.
The reason why hes my preferred candidate at this stage.

One thing thats missing from that list - he also developed melbournes defensive structures

I don’t necessarily agree it has to be an internal appointment or a premiership era assistant but I l do agree with the semblance of community and steering the same ship.

To me this is the most important aspect.

Yes the Head Coach is a major cog in the wheel, but we also have assistants, recruiting and list managers which all go into the melting pot of what makes a successful team.

Those elements are still stable.

I’m a big fan of Ken Hinkley (I think he’s been able to adapt his team successfully over his tenure) but you’d expect that he’d want to bring in his own guys, so that would almost rule him out.

Despite his failure at Brisbane, I’d be fine with Leppa too on the basis that he’s taken some learnings from his first stint and improved as a result.

Will be interesting to see with both McQualter and Steve Morris whether they make any large changes structurally and game style wise, or whether they keep to the same.

has to be an outside person with no previous connection to the club for mine otherwise they get far too sentimental. it is just human nature. That rules out Grigg, Newman, Knights etc maybe even Leon Cameron.

He started with Port at the same time Hardwick started with Richmond.
Hardwick got 3 flags, Hinkely adapted and come up short over and over again.

Would hate that decision.

Damien Hardwick is available.

Side note, Mini shouldn't be overlooked. Has overseen our complete regeneration since 2014, clearly highly regarded since he was picked to take over, assuming by Hardwick.
Would have plenty of his own ideas, has seen what works, knows the players.
See what happens.
I imagine we’ll go through an extensive process similar to what Collingwood did.
If at the end of that process he is rated no 1 , then he gets the gig.
McRae was very left field obviously he ticked so many boxes that more experienced coaches didn’t.

Whateley reckons this is the best coaching job in 10 years, there’ll be no shortage of candidates

Wow really? Melbourne’s defensive structure from 2021 onwards is some of the best I’ve ever seen. Would like to see what he can do leading an entire team given his history of successful development!
