Richmond to take Cousins

Yes we also remember half were as cheap as they come and his mates kept kicking it to him.

Do u think he was drug free that game ?

Are you implying

a) Cousins didn't play well that game

and

b) He only played well because he was on drugs?

Despite the fact you contradict yourself, that argument is totally flawed.
Of course he played well. 38 possessions and we saw him running as hard as he usually does both ways. If I recall correctly he also had the most contested possessions in that game.

Your second point is as equally stupid. At that point he was cleared of having any drugs his system. Even if he had, I highly doubt the drugs he took would've enhanced performance.

Can't remember Dew ever beng chased into the Swan River, or being arrested shirtless in downtown Adelaide, or partying with a former champion only for him to pass on hours later, or being found passed out on a park bench in a city at the other side of the country??

Dew was an overweight former player who had connections with Clarkson. Clarkson, Russel and Co knew what they could gain if Dew put in and got himself fit.

Wallace and Sheedy are going for the great white hope.
You hyporcrite.

Its richmond's choice to take him, they take the risk but ultimately it comes back to the player. If they want to gamble good on them, good luck, hope it works out.

With regard to the extra pick however, don't agree, Polak is on your list, has a contract, richmond have not delisted him and paid him out on the basis that his career is over, which it obviously is not, RFC do not run a charity.

The AFL have always wanted Ben to be playing again, they are in this up to their necks, all there other hopes have opted not to take the risk, apparently they have done their homework. Sheedy is merely an afl tool, as to a certain extent is richmond.

They will receive the concession, both ben and gourdis(?) will be at the tigers next year, Courtesy of the AFL and its feel good department. It is a farce really, but all the best to the tigers :)

I don't have a problem with Polak going the rookie list. However, I don't think they should get an extra pick in the PSD. They should only be able to promote a rookie for season 2009.

I think you will find that no one doesnt want him to play be it for anyone, i personally applaud Richmond for taking the gamble, i really hope it works out for them both. But 3 other clubs considered him, 2 intensly and all 3 turned there backs and werent prepared to take the risk. Why? Is there still a problem that those 3 clubs found, or is it that they didnt want to be linked to that type of player? I think most people still have Doubts about Cousins and wether he is now on the staight and narrow. I guess that only time will tell, but i personally hope its a good luck story and not one that blows up in Richmonds face.

I believe the other clubs that said no were more worried about the impact on nervous sponsors, many of whom would love to get out of their deals and a Cousins blowup would be an ideal excuse.

I know this was an issue with North (Mazda). As it is, with us yet to sign a major sponsor, that problem doesn't really exist.

Its not Richmond's fault this has all occurred at the last moment, the AFL always thought that the saints and lions would take him, both pulled out however.

I suspect that both Sheedy and the AFL have been pretty busy coming up with this contingency plan over the last week, yes sheedy has been calling for ben to play again for a while now, he is merely the AFL's mouth piece.

Leave the tigers be, this is the AFL's idea. Good marketing unless ben screws up :)

Whoever took Cousins was going to cop it. I reckon good on the Tigers. If they get the best out of him then every other club will be wishing they took the risk. If it doesn't work out, the Tiges can still be congratulated for actually giving him the second chance the football world has so whole-heartedly supported but baulked at when it came to the crunch.

Makes round 1 and big prospect if Benny is up and firing for it.

(Should have to use pick 6 IMO however)

What does worry me here though, is that the AFL could in fact actually be manipulating the final 8, finals, and club profits over the next 2 or 3 years in their zeal to get ben back on the park. Conspiracy theory, probably, surely they would not intentionally do that..would they?

Whats been really funny to watch with all this Cousins crap is the way fans of each club react to the same thing.

Try and relate it to real life situations...you're purchasing something so why dont the Tiges fans try to look at it objectively.

If Cousins were a second hand car...it would be a slightly rusty 1995 M3 that appears cheap but with no way of knowing if money was owed on it or whether it had been badly banged up.

Many others have kicked the tyres...a few even had full mechanical inspections done on it...despite the price everyone rejected it and didnt even make an offer.

Now the Tiges fans are the latest to think it must be somehow a bargain....and they havent even done an inspection. They're even starting to say everyone who went for a test drive or inspection must be somehow the unlucky ones.

No idea why some think there's a bargain to be had...or why they must think the other AFL clubs are stupid.[/quote]

Are other clubs stupid or do they just lack the balls to take a risk?

It has been reported that sponsors have raised concerns about their brand being linked to Cousins. The Lions, Swans, Port, Demons and now Collingwood have lost millions over the last year and the financial downturn worldwide means sponsors dollars will be hard to come by for the next two years. Hawthorn and Geelong don't need a Cousins, Eagles have ruled themselves out, Freo have finally gone the youth approach as have Melbourne. So who does that leave?

The Crows, Bulldogs, North, Carlton and Richmond. Crows and Bulldogs lists are settled and Judd at Carlton most likely veto'd any move on Cousins. So really it was North, Essendon or Richmond who were the serious contenders.

As to the rusty M3 comparison Cousins is one of a kind, hand built endurance speed machine. As several posters have said even if he produces 75% of his previous output he'd still finish in the top 8 players at Richmond. The upside is huge and if it fails its cost the Tigers very little.

Being hurt by choosing to do something dangerous that increases the likelihood of being hurt is totally different to being hurt when doing something that everyone does that doesn't normally increase the risk of injury.
No. Both are the same. Both are 'duty of care.'
The player that blows out a knee while surfing, chose to go surfing despite knowing there is a chance of getting hurt, Polak did not choose to get hit by the tram.
The person that goes surfing and hurts his knee did not choose to hurt his knee either. The choice he made was to go surfing. Nothing more than that. On the other hand, the choice Polak made was to walk in the path of a tram, even though he didn't choose to get injured by doing that. He still made that dangerous choice though, and I certainly wouldn't have made that choice. Adam Ramanauskas did not choose cancer.

Baaaaaahaaaaaaaaaaaahaaaaaaaaaa...haaaaaaaaa hooooooooo....

A Carlton supporter worried about the AFL intentionally manipulating the rules to benefit one club.

The irony is just hilarious.............

There could be a fly in the ointment!

Fremantle will oppose Richmond’s application to put injured utility player Graham Polak on their rookie list, a controversial move which could see former Brownlow medallist Ben Cousins recruited by the Tigers in Tuesday’s pre-season draft.

Polak suffered a serious brain injury when a tram struck him in June and he will battle to play football in 2009.

The AFL allowed Essendon to put delisted midfielder Adam Ramanauskas on the rookie list in 2007 as he battled cancer.

Richmond will get an extra selection in the pre-season draft pick if their request is granted, so the league has asked clubs to respond before a commission meeting on Monday.

Fremantle chief executive Steve Rosich said the rules should not be changed.

“The AFL rules are very clear,” Rosich told the West Australian.

“Richmond has the option of putting Graham Polak on the long-term injury lost and elevating a rookie on to the main list.”

loss of respect:thumbsdown:

Yes, Obeanie one, the rules are VERY clear, lets see what happens though shall we :)

By the way, I thought my comments made it crystal clear that the AFL was doing this for their own benefit, and that RFC was merely a tool, guess that flew right over your head though :(

The most important piece is the last sentence.

“Richmond has the option of putting Graham Polak on the long-term injury lost and elevating a rookie on to the main list.”

Richmond can still get what they want just by following normal process. There is no need for them to ask for an exemption. Polak will be on a list either way, Cousins will be at Richmond either way, and they will still be able to pick up a youngster via the rookie draft and immediately elevate him if they so choose.

That's how it should happen, easy as 1..2..3..

Unless they have committed themselves elsewhere already, isn't this what its all about? They need that second pick..

I think you may be wrong Timmy. If Richmond could still get what they want following the normal process, they would not have gone to such lengths as they are. If the player Richmond were originally planning to select with their PSD pick is eligible for the rookie draft, they could select him there, however, there are 7 other clubs with selections before Richmond in the rookie draft. If Richmond are aware that one of those 7 clubs intends on selecting the player that they want, the only way they can get both him and Cousins is to create another pick in the PSD.

I love how all the Tigger fans who were bagging Cousins last month on BF, are now vigorously defending him. As if he was already drafted. LOL.

Good luck to them though.

Hislop, Cousins, Youth Policy, Wallace, Spin.
