One small thing about Hardie that we're forgetting (myself included) is that he's currently rookie listed and we can only select him if he's moved onto the main list as a replacement for someone who has been moved onto the long term injury list.

Since we have no-one on the LTI list, that's why Hardie's currently not getting a game.

I gave your post a like , because i took it on face value what you said was correct - hah !!!

That rule was scrapped years ago, which is why the Cat A rookie list seems a redundant thing now days

Regardless if a player is on the senior list, Cat A rookie or Cat B rookie, they’re openly available for selection each week - Mullin is currently a Cat B rookie

While in past seasons we’ve played Atkins, Blicavs & Close while they spent their max time on the rookie lists

Edit - seems Dempsey was upgaded at the end of last season - but he’s another who got games while a rookie

I’m not even gonna look it up but I can almost guarantee that is not true

That rule no longer exists.

Someone needs to tell the AFL that then. This is from their rules, dated 23rd February 2024.

Reckon that rule went away years ago. You can play him whenever

That’s in reference to list management - used to be that to elevate a player from the rookie list to the senior list it was done at the draft and using the teams last selection/s to elevate the player or players

They changed it a few years ago so that at list lodgement time, teams could elevate a rookie to the senior list without the need for the draft, they would simply take an available senior list spot

As for rookie eligibility to play - that changed ahead of the 2018 season for CatA rookies - grabbed from a twitter discussion about this

We always heard the calls that Chris Scott doesn't rate ruckmen. It appears he now doesn't rate midfielders either! ;)
Scotty has been to league and pitched his idea for a field dimension change.
Let's see if it gets up.

Just take the goal posts at Kardinia and move them to the wings. Simple
"and Hawkins is on a long lead to the pocket. He's marked it!"

"it's about a 90m kick at goal"

Speaking of the rules of the game - there’s nothing in them regarding the naming of the sub & that said sub must come from those named on the bench:

12.5 Substitute Player
(a) The Substitute Player
(i) Each Club must name a Substitute Player in their Official Team Sheet
from Players included in the Team list submitted in accordance with
Regulation 11.

11.2 Home and Away and Finals Series Matches

(a) Friday and Saturday Matches
A Club participating in a Home and Away or Finals Series Match on a Friday or
Saturday must lodge its Team list with the AFL by 5.45pm AEDT (or AEST
where Matches are being played outside of daylight savings for Victoria) on the
preceding Thursday. The Team list must contain the name and guernsey
number of 18 Players in playing position, five (5) Players on an extended
Interchange Bench and three (3) Emergency Players.

(b) Sunday Matches

Sunday must lodge its Team list with the AFL by 5.45pm AEDT (or AEST
where matches are being played outside of daylight savings for Victoria)
on the preceding Thursday. The Team list lodged at this time must
contain the name and guernsey number of 18 Players in playing position
and eight (8) Players on an extended Interchange Bench. A Club is not
obliged at this time to identify which of the eight (8) Players will be
Interchange Players and Emergency Players.

(ii) A Club must then again lodge with the AFL its Team list, in which it sets
out the name and guernsey number of 18 Players in position, (5) Players
on an extended Interchange Bench and three (3) Emergency Players, by
4.30pm AEDT (or AEST where matches are being played outside of
daylight savings for Victoria) on the preceding Friday.

My reading of that is that anyone named on the team sheet, regardless of position can be named the sub

3 Irish players in the team again this Saturday. Amazing how they can come over here and pick up the skills. Mullin especially, starting at 23 years old. Strangely enough their kicking skills quickly become as good or better than their local teammates who have been playing since they were kids. I've been kicking a football since I started playing as a kid and many years later I still haven't learned how to kick a low penetrating drop punt. The Irish guys have no problem.

It's baffling. It's like every week we're losing more mids, and not bringing in players to replace them. It's like our mission is to have a team of defenders and forwards only. The club evidently has zero confidence any of the mids in the VFL can do anything, because why would you willingly be fielding such a weak midfield that has already been exposed again and again if you had even the suggestion that someone could help strengthen it?

I think it’s pretty obvious now that when it comes to selection Chris Scott is hopeless. Sure he’s great with strategy and on game day but selection has always been his pitfall.

It’s mind blowing to me how Rohan can keep getting a call up off the back of one decent finals series his whole time at the club. Lol Mannagh thinking he’d finally play AFL.

I also feel O’Connor doesn’t bring much to the table either. Sure he’s a good “depth” player that can perform well enough when someone is injured but a lot of the time he’s a passenger. Even if his role is to be a tagger he might nullify a small mid like Neale but wouldn’t have the same impact against a Cripps or Bont. Hardie is such an obvious choice ahead of him it’s laughable.

Even funnier is copium from people trying to justify these moronic decisions. “Oh you’re not at the club”, “The Coaching staff know more than you”. There’s such a glaring deficiency in the team that anyone can see this team needs a ball winner especially when there’s NO DANGER, BLITZ OR CLARK.

Even last week playing Bowes as sub instead of Clark. I could go on and on

Pity any one that comes to the club through the MSD.

Bowes will start. Holmes will be our impact mid.

Bruhn and Atkins were better last week.

I imagine MOC will be midfield more than wing/half back this time.

Maybe they really will pull the trigger on Stewart as a mid to get him out of his current rut.

If Stewart is a mid then we need to close the doors, crack a bag of doritos, and watch through the window of the Humphries train

Probably......but then they have to try something different to shake it up and get the guys out of their funk.

I'm not sure it'll work but I'm not against trying it either because we need / must do something different if we want a different result.

Rolling Holmes through there more has been step one and a major change.

Based on last week, Bruhn will be getting slightly more minutes on the field and Atkins more in midfield (rather than here, there and everywhere).

Bringing Bowes back into the fold (full game) and throwing Stewart in there would be enough to supplement that as far as "trying new things". Bowes has had one full game in midfield the past 5 weeks, Stewart has had none.

Yes really. Mannagh is not a more logical choice than Rohan. On any measure. You might like to see it tried, hell I might too, but it’s not an obvious logical choice.

What role is rohan playing that our forward line doesnt already have covered? On any measure how is that logical?

If this isn’t a rule, it’s a strong convention because I’ve never known Geelong to name anyone other than one of the interchange players as sub.

If someone can point to an example of it happening, I’m happy to stand corrected.

I think that’s true of most if not all other clubs too. After all, there’s no reason why not. The sub would be decided on at the selection meeting.

As opposed to doing nothing and expecting different results?

Isn't there a saying about doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

Kind of like how Hocking forced a cleanout of the coaches from 2021 and brought in people who enforced gameplan changes. because it wasn't working when it mattered?

I trust the match committee to make changes but if they are sticking with the same old which has been not meeting expectations then we may as well pull up stumps and start the offseason early.

I'd rather try Hardie, Mannagh, Mullin, Humphries and see what we've got long term than trying and failing with what didn't work last year. That's why i'm happy they are playing Conway. Only way he gets better is to keep playing him, same as Mullin. I will say i was originally not on board with overexposing Mullin but he's stepped up big time so I'm happy for him to get a gig.

2022 was awesome but that was a culmination of a squad with purpose who wanted to prove doubters wrong and played a brand of footy that had hunger, drive and a willingness to keep fighting for victories. I just don't see it with this current unit, there just isn't that level of toughness to win footy. Whether that is inexperience or lack of talent currently on the park i'm not sure....

I'm backing our match committee in as they have enough runs on the board, I just wish at times they'd take some risks in games like this week
