There's lots of issues right now but geez I'd like to see us sort out a forward structure that looks like the foundation of the future.
Obviously Jones and Stringer are underdone right now but adding to that we have no legitimate small forwards. Menzie's is probably going to be an option pretty soon honestly if he's remotely close to the level.

We also need to demonstrate we are building towards a game plan that is structurally solid defensively whilst allowing us to attack effectively as well. Right now we can't seem to get both pieces working in a remotely convincing fashion. Makes you wonder what they trained all preseason. I'm sick of watching us rarely getting good forward 50 entries - no wonder our goal kicking accuracy is so bad the way we move the ball.
Yep. No legitimate crumbers in the wet weather was farcical. We seemed to have prepared better for the rain against Port. Wanganeen should have played. We actually should be pumping games into him as we did last year with Perkins etc. Maybe managing his young body.

The problem with our team defense is transition. The time we take to stop thinking attack and start thinking defending. Now you never get it 100% right. In fact the best teams only get it right 60 to 70 percent of the time and even then they have the ability to adjust it further down the line to force side in certain directions.
We continually let play get behind us through the middle because we either turn it over which is impossible to defend or we do not switch to defensive mode quick enough when we do not have the ball. So the players will spend a couple of seconds watching the ball and bang the opposition are 10 meters plus away and we can not stop them. It is not really about ability to defend one on one but the time it takes the brain to react.
Throw in the fact our forward pressure is so bad we would hold the footy inside our 50 maybe 20% of the time and allow opposition to break out from half back and we get what we have.

IMHO the time has arrived. We are getting nothing out of our older players. Time to get games into all the kids.
Anyone over 27 will not be here the next time we make finals.

They are basically a package deal when it comes to overall gameplan aren't they? Truck defense, Cara attack, and they work together to blend it together.
So we’re told, but Cara is open to becoming a senior coach in his own right now, which he never used to be, so unless truck is to become his 2ic somewhere else their partnership won’t be forever.

Sheeds stayed too long with no interest in a succession plan
dodoro has managed a list with no experience and credentials to do so
peter jackson made some horrible contract decisions in the early 2000s
we employed matthew knights rather than dimma
peptides
did not handle the hub and
lost Daniher, saad, fantasia and Mckenna in one hit
lost tippa who is really our only exciting player beside stringer when he is on
employed ben rutten without going through any formal interview process because essendon does not do governance even after peptide scandal
retain Campbell even though he has shown little evidence of being able to lead on field success
compare how Carlton treated Cain liddle to how essendon have treated Xavier Campbell
we are a mess with no strong leadership in any facet of our football club and have an internal review happening lead by a 75 year old man who was magnificent for our club 20 years ago but was a clear factor in our decline, a champion ruckman who hasn’t played in 30 years and is a school teacher with no real experience evaluating organisations and implementing and leading change and a bloke who hasn’t played in 15 years, was an ineffectual assistant coach who is a yes man on an underperforming board
we are an irrelevant football club who will not move with the times
until brasher, Campbell, dodoro and sheeds are gone we are going nowhere
there's a lot to unpack there and a lot that is wrongly sheeted home as the responsibility of the current playing list, coaching team and administration.

Last night BT mentioned we looked like a bunch of individuals playing , no synergy, no thought of bringing mates in better positions into play, no selfless play, no instinctive handball.

It's hard to argue, sure you could put it down to poor game plan and positioning but if you look through the other lens it's just a bunch of blokes playing their own little game of survival
This is definitely how we defend. Look after my own man even though I have let the ball past me.

We looked different when Snelling, Walla and Raz were in the forward line. Langford too, one of our more reliable kicks. Need a couple of small forwards to replace Walla and Raz and will look better when Snelling and Langford are back.

I hate this post because it is what essendon supporters are reduced to
the endeavour was there is an indictment of our pathetic football club
the endeavour should be a non negotiable
just like a doctor tries hard to treat patients and a paramedic tries hard every day to save lives
the club is on its knees because of incompetence, weak decision making and an apathetic playing group
showing endeavour is not something to be celebrated rather expected as a non negotiable
Yeah but it’s still good they showed endeavour

Yep there is nothing forward of midfield.
Every week it just slingshots down the other end.
What highlights that and makes it worse is we win the centre stoppages almost every week.

The tactic of us continually playing +1 at stoppages and allowing opposition +1 in defense is a big net loss and needs to be scrapped imo. Our offense is our weakest part of the ground, we constantly let the ball out of F50 too easily. Stop protecting our mids who are supposed to be our strength on the big contracts

They kicked 3 goals after half time.
How many did we kick for the match
again you would have to focus on the ineptitude of our coaching and play
ant555 perfectly describes the multitude of our inadequacies in this thread

I agree
but time for an independent external review and analysis of decisions made and legitimately start again
how about Ben rutten actually applies for his job and is made to undertake a job interview
it would be nice to watch our side win or at least kick 10 goals in a game

I think that (independent external review) would be counter-productive, costly and unnecessary. Starting again would add a couple of years to the rebuild. Working with what we've got is better than starting again. We look for free agents at next draft according to Mahoney, fill the gaps and build the list from the considerable talent that's already there. Adversity can be character and team building - as long as the negativity doesn't threaten to blow it all to bits.

You cant have 1 without the other though can you? I feel like it was sold to us as Truck head coach, creator of defensive system. Cara right hand man, creator of ball movement and attack which was in direct alignment with Trucks defensive setup. Even this year we're told Cara had tried to implement the next layer to the plan which is where we've tripped up.
