Game day:

Really looking forward to this test agains the Dogs

Weitering - Naughton while he is deep, hand off when he pushes up the ground
OMac - JUH, Newman - Hannan, Gov to take the resting mid.
Saad and Williams - Vandermeer and Weighthman

Happy to go head to head with their mids, with the proviso of paying close attention to Libba at stoppages. Hewett on Bont, Gov when he pushes forward. Main focus is to push them backward if they get first hands at the clearances

Harry, Charlie, Jack to spread their defenders, given they are undersized

Walsh a great inclusion, but Cerra is a big loss

Blues by 5 goals
The matchups & strategy at either end should be pretty interesting. Going off the named teams (& not really counting Treloar as he probably spends more time in the midfield?)

McKay 204 / De Koning 203 / Silvagni 194 / Curnow 192 / Fogarty 180 / Owies 180 / Fisher 179 / Durdin 173
Keath 197 / Gardner 197 / Richards 188 / Dale 187 / Crozier 187 / Duryea 181 / Daniel 170

Weitering 196 / McDonald 196 / McGovern 191 / Newman 187 / Docherty 185 / Williams 185 / Saad 178
Naughton 195 / Cordy 195 / Ugle-Hagan 197 / Hannan 190 / Vandermeer 181 / Scott 180 / Weightman 178

We match up alright with them down back, however our forwards have a pretty significant height advantage. The flipside being that they should have some pretty good run & drive out of the back half with the 5 shorter guys, so our small forwards are going to have to work bloody hard to pressure & contain, along with assistance from the mids. I wonder how much time Bont plays forward this week with that ankle? He could provide them another taller target.

Thought the initial reports on Bont after Rd 1 was that he was a real big chance to miss Rd 2. Wonder if he's not fully fit and wont be firing 100% tonight...

We lowered our eyes alot more last week compared to last year, this week it even more critical rather than having the ball on the deck in the forward 50. If so, as you say, our smalls (all players) will have to ramp up the pressure

Where Bont plays will depend who has the upper hand in stoppages

One thing I really like, having seen it now in three games is that we are kicking much lower and targeting a single teammate far more often.

It gives an opposition less time to get to the player being kicked to and is far more direct.

Compare it with the high floating kicks that allow half a dozen players to get to where the ball will land.

In 98 years of running around in the mud against these guys, we have never played a final against them.

I find this information very interesting, quirky even.
nothing wrong with a bit of bryan quirky.....

1 x 29 yr old.
1 x 28 yr old.
1 x 19 yr old.

Then everyone else between 21 - 27 yrs old...our list is primed for a flag tilt for a number of years.
A bit of a stretch when Cripps, Saad, Williams, McGovern all 27. 4 years takes those guys to 31 so the next 4 years is the crucial time for the list as currently constructed imo. Maybe 5. I'm not saying we can't stretch out the window, but it will require some changes on the fly to restructure around Walsh and Cerra.

At any rate, we've got the age profile right I reckon. 2024-2025 is going to be boom time with every important player on our list in their prime.
