I dunno, the Dogs are pretty good at letting the better opposition mids just roam around and do what they want. Also you might be underestimating Sam Walsh.
They don't really tag, they don't need to. They have such a deep midfield they'll overpower your 1 or 2 stars through weight of numbers.

Walsh will probably get bumped and pushed around by the bunch of them, but won't get a hard tag.

Previously they've setup their stoppage structure with two players putting contact/bodying Cripps and occupying the space around him, rather than a classic tag. They try and make the stoppage harder for him then would tend to let him go in general play.

The same strategy wouldn't work the same with Walsh. You probably don't need multiple players on him at the stoppages, he's not the same first-touch contested player and is giving up a good 4" and 10kg on Cripps, but on the flipside you probably don't want to lose focus on him as the ball exits.

I wonder if they'd be in Bailey Smith's ear for a run with role. Smith is clearly a confident guy, insert-cliche-about-drinking-bathwater-or-tickets-on-himself, but he's also got a bit of aggression and is fit. They might say to Bailey, "why don't you play on Walsh, go with him head-to-head all day, go out and win to prove to everyone you're the best" or something along those lines.

In the Pies game the six goals kicked on Plow were because they targeted his matchups (DeGoey, Elliott til injured, Hoskin Elliott, Cox). Agreed. I lost what hair I had left watching him minding Cox. Way too risky for my liking.

I totally agree with the guy that tweeted the pic though. A top team would shred us to pieces if we left Stocker on a Stinger type in lots of space for too long, especially with 60 plus inside fifties.

It’s a huge gamble and too offensive.
From memory only stocker was matched up with stringer once. Much ado about nothing.

All this focus on Harry is so unfortunate.. just imagine a fit Charlie standing right next to him..

Lets all prey to god that he he comes good like Doc.

Doggies defenders and defenders of all teams would have nightmares trying to defend these 2...McKay now kicking bags and Charlie already was - 7 goals in his last game vs Dogs. Our Lynch/Riewoldt, Kennedy/Darling, Franklin/Roughead equivalent...except we've barely had them on the park together.

Unfortunately with Casboult out of form, I'm expecting McKay to be heavily focused and probably double-teamed.

His 30+ possession game versus Dogs in 2019 refers, plenty of midfield time in that game, if our brains trust can recall.
35 disposals, 89% disposal efficiency, 15 contested, 7 marks, 1 goal, 7 clearances, 4 inside 50s, 2 rebound 50s, 5 intercept possessions, 6 score involvements, 12 pressure acts, 2 Brownlow votes.

He had 4 clangers but 2 free kicks against which means from his 35 he only had two unforced errors with disposals; he had 1 turnover and missed one shot at goal.

Only had the 320m gained but it's fine when you're hitting handballs and short passes to players in the middle or forward. Also didn't register a tackle, but we clearly had most of the ball in the middle and from memory he was sitting 5-10m off Cripps' shoulder so he might not have had too many opportunities. Cripps 37, SPS 35, Murphy 28, Fisher 28, Walsh 26...

That was a great day.

Also, just finishing up another rewatch of the Essendon game - I don't think Gibbons was as bad as has been made out.

Agree he did some nice things and he perhaps gets caught out of position sometimes/somehow becomes the marking target when he shouldn't.

My main frustration on the weekend was that on a number of occasions he didn't attack that ball and hoped that it would get to him out the back, nearly all times he tried this his opponent won the ball.

Smith is probably seething that Walsh didn't flinch or break stride after his elbow to the back of Sam's head last year. Watch him try it again.

Im gonna cry if we get robbed of having our twin towers moment for the next 5-7 years... could and will be the difference of our team being a real threat.. just like when we lost Fev in the years pushing for top 4.

Reserves player write ups are enlightening.

Love the specific references to tackle technique for both LOB and Newman, makes me oh so happy to hear that we've got somebody trying to teach it properly.

Kennedy rushing off partway through the game cause he may have been required in the seniors? I'm assuming that was linked to Harry being under the weather.

Good signs for De Koning, hard to get a read on whether they think he's ready for the seniors.

Durdin obviously a work in progress, doubt we see him this year with Fisher and Martin still to return.

Sounds like Willo is struggling a bit, probably a combination of form and then overcompensating for his form by being too aggressive. Another who may well see out the year in the reserves.

Ramsay and Honey getting more praise, confident these two guys will get a chance at some point this year but I reckon it'll just be a taste before they head back to the reserves to keep building.

And finally Setters - based on his notes I don't think he's in the frame this week, sounds like they're still working on his focus and positioning at stoppages. Gonna take that as a huge positive compared to the possibility of him getting stuck on a wing for no good reason.
Yep, we like to see him hit bodies or drive through with contact not just arms...
you can tell a lot by how a player tackles, intent impact and technique are huge imo, lack of embracing physical contact is why players are so poor in this part of their game...
the contact and arms comment is spot on...

looking at our multiple goalkickers across our last 3 games against them

Charlie: - / 7.1 / - (av 7.1)
Eddie: 4.1 / - / - (av 4.1)
Harry: 3.0 / 4.1 / 4.3 (av 3.8)
Martin: 2.1 / - / - (av 2.1)
Mitch: 2.0 / 1.0 / 1.1 ( av 1.4)

Levi: 1.1 / 0 / 3.0 (av 1.4)
Gibbons: 2.0 / 0.1 / 1.1 (av 1.1)
Cuningham: 0 / 2.2 / - (av 1.1)

With all 8 players there it's a combined average of 21.3 goals. Wouldn't mind having Charlie, Martin & Mitch out there with their combined average of 10.3...

That's where we will need to be smart with our ball movement. If they are double teaming Big H then we will have someone free and we will need to lower the eyes and look for the spare.

Also, just finishing up another rewatch of the Essendon game - I don't think Gibbons was as bad as has been made out.

Applied some good pressure, had a few kicks and handballs either fall short of him or favour his opponent (plus a few very unlucky bounces), was under immediate pressure for a lot of his disposals which caused some errors, but he also hit some really good kicks as well as a few smart taps to the advantage of a teammate which wouldn't have registered on the stat sheet.

May still come out if we need to fit Williams, Murph and SPS into the starting 22, but it was hardly the deplorable outing some have suggested.

Haven't watched the replay earlier in the week I tend to agree.

Definitely had a couple of bad moments which stood out though. That's what people remember.

Be I will back his midfield. I don’t see him focusing on any one Blues mid but rather will back his mids to do what they do, not tag and just focus on winning the ball.
Battle of the forwards and defence.
We need to be a lot more efficient moving inside 50s and not expect I50 numbers in the high 50s like the rest of the games. Last year we trounced them by over 8 goals yet we lost the I50 count 41-53. That’s a telling factor.
If we can make use of our chances going forward and not overly expose our backline on the counter attack, then we will be competitive.

Forget Charlie. Has not played for 2 years. Should not be allowed to come near the seniors until he has played at least 8 games in the Ressies, and showed he deserves to be promoted, and that his body can stand up to the rigors of AFL.

8 games?! Why would he be held to a different standard than anyone else, particularly a 100% guaranteed best 22 player? How many reserves games did Doc have to play to prove his body could stand up to the rigors of AFL?

Why only 8? Sticks played 136 games games in the SANFL before joining Carlton, didn't do him any harm!

What's the chance they bring TDK to replace Cas?
Surely he has to be fitter and more Mobile than Cas.
I think we can expect JSos, Williams & SPS in.
Apart from McGovern (injured), the other out will be Veeeeerrrry interesting.
Need fully fit players across the whole team to match the Doggies. Go Blues !!
