Have to agree with Windyhill's detailed assessment of Merrett.

He added to the mix of high quality players at Essendon without being in the top echelon like S. Madden, Van der Haar, Watson etc. Used his elbows to great effect back in the days when it could be gotten away with more. Was very durable and versatile...... so overall he was a valuable team player. At Brisbane his experience was also a big asset.

In summary, no champion but a "very good, ordinary big man" to borrow Jack Dyer's terminology.

Although I probably didn't see Rodger the Dodger at his best, I loved watching him play in the 90s for Bears. Top player.

As far as Brisbane goes he is an all time great and a legend and an immortal.. but does he rate alongside the greats?

IMO he was very average.
