Roger Merret ... how good was he?

Have to agree with Windyhill's detailed assessment of Merrett.

He added to the mix of high quality players at Essendon without being in the top echelon like S. Madden, Van der Haar, Watson etc. Used his elbows to great effect back in the days when it could be gotten away with more. Was very durable and versatile...... so overall he was a valuable team player. At Brisbane his experience was also a big asset.

In summary, no champion but a "very good, ordinary big man" to borrow Jack Dyer's terminology.

Well.. is he an all time great, a legend, an immortal, or just a pretty handy club footballer??

As far as Brisbane goes he is an all time great and a legend and an immortal.. but does he rate alongside the greats?

So great you can't even spell his name right.

A great player & champion person. :thumbsu:
