Rookie draft discussion

I think it's important to draft players that have a body suitable for AFL games. Many of the guys who have not made it via the rookie list fall into that category, while guys that did (i.e., Firrito, Campbell, Mullett, Pederson, Adams) had some athletic capability.

So many on here wanted to draft a guy with much publicised attitude problems, now we are discussing a guy who is overweight. Here's a thought, let's get one of the many talented kids that don't come with excess baggage!

Now Blonde, if they've got great attitudes AND are talented kids.. chances are they're usually highly rated. And go early.

So then it comes down to gambling with the rookie picks. You can take a less talented kid with a great attitude like McGennis - or you might opt for a talented kid who has scope for attitude improvement.

I've never watched Willy Rioli but let's say his talent is not in question and he knuckled down for 4-5 top shelf AFL seasons. Like Choppy did.

I'd argue that's just as valuable as having Harry Plodder who cuts the fat off his broccoli, slays the beep test and could play until he's 55 but doesn't even get manned up by opposition coaches because they know he'll never hurt them.

Reckon there's room for both types on a list.

Brady Rawlings won 3 B&F's as the latter didnt he?

Gee whiz, you know your struggling when your lockdown tagger is the best player at the club.

The rookie draft starts in a few minutes, right? Is there anyone doing live coverage or do we have to wait until later in the day to find out who we picked?

Fair point tho I rated Brady above an average plodder mate. He was hard as nails, a good height for his type of player and had a knack of finding the pill.

do posters think we will take rookies as per a need or just the best available?
If it's true we're talking to Joel Tippett I expect it's on a need basis. I don't know much about him, but I don't think he's in the "best available" category, is he?

IIRC Rawlings was a 1st round pick. He was a terrible kick but a very good footballer. I also recall when he pantsed Stephen Hill in a game (41 touches to 7, or something close to that). Excellent leader and clubman. He wasn't a plodder.

Doesn't really bother me who North pick up in the rookie draft. Just as long as the players who are recruited are well equipt to play at AFL level if one of the senior players goes down with a long term injury.

Really hoping Cavara gets picked up, is a real honest, hard working battler. If he was a few inches taller, he'd be lining up round 1.

How did you manage to get banned in 8 posts?

You can only have six rookies.

Four Category A's and two Category B's.

I thought it was 6 Cat A? Meaning we could have 4 selections? McGenniss & Warren plus another 4. Wallace is 1 of 3 possible Cat B rookies. Or is it changing again for 2014? Confused.... From the AFL site; http://www.afl.com.au/afl-hq/the-afl-explained/rookie-players

With the entry of the Gold Coast Suns and GWS Giants into the AFL, clubs were permitted to have a minimum of four and up to eight players on their rookie list but starting from 2013 the maximum will be reduced to six. These six rookies are now classified as Category A rookies.

In addition to these six rookie-listed players, each club can include up to three additional players (now referred to as Category B rookies) on its Rookie List provided the player either:

• has not registered in an Australian Football competition for three years immediately before inclusion on the Rookie List;
• is an international player, meaning he is not an Australian citizen and has not lived in Australia for a substantial period;
• is a former NSW Scholarship player with that club;
• is a former International Scholarship player with that club;
• is a rookie Zone Selection for clubs based in NSW or Queensland.

Templeton / Cavarra / Battersby

Sully /Tippett / Vandeleur

I hope we give Cavarra a chance. Sounds like a good kid with strong leadership and work ethic. Could be the next Sam Mitchell or at the very least he'll add midfield grunt to Werribee or Nth Ballarat. Will be a positive impact on the culture of the club.

well i don't think is going to be the best available so if he gets picked it would answer the question.

There's fat on broccoli?

Got this recipe from Loose's cook book
