Player Watch Rookie Pick #45 (2015) - Dan Houston

The AFL need to brief players that tucking their chin after a bump or tackle could save a few players from hitting their head on the turf. It's a natural reaction to throw your head back after a hit, learning not to do that could help avoid injury.

The problem Dan faces is he had a clear option and the time to choose it. In many of these situations (like Pep earlier in the year) the player is 100% going for the ball then in the last second turns to brace to protect themselves. Here Dan was clearly not going to win the ball and instead of tackling he chose to bump.

I dont reckon he got him that high (and definitely didnt intend to), and honestly dont think it was that big a hit, but when you make the choice, especially against a smaller player, then you wear the consequences when you get unlucky and the other player gets knocked out. Should and probably will get 3-5.

I really hope its not the last time we see him play for Port.

Ok, Dan should have tackled but Port must fight this tooth and nail. There is clearly no knock to the head until Rankine hit the ground. My theory is the bump was seriously a big hit to the rib cage with the ball also causing Rankine to be so heavily winded that he couldn't brace his fall to the ground, his head hitting the ground hard enough for a concussion.
Any boxers out there knows how devastating a hit to the solar plexus has.
Dan will get suspended unfortunately but Port must bring every specialist available to dissect this incident.
And yes I hope Rankine is ok. A fabulous player.

I actually agree with your analysis (though he might have clipped him), but in 2024 I still think that's 3+ weeks.

Don’t tell me Rachele has hurt your feelings has he!

When the dust settles and the emotion of the night (congrats on beating 15th facilitated by sniping our best player) - just take a look at how you view these things. I can only guess you were one of the many booing rankine off tonight.

We have seen the impacts these concussions have. Rankine showed boxers arms tonight (a sign of genuine brain insult). Former players have suicided - and yes, it’s correlated.

Doesn’t hurt to maintain some grace / respect about it.
No we thought Rachele was a soft w@nker well before the last 7 days <insert Rocky Theme.mp3 @64kbps> lol

Carn, You guys booed Brad Ebert for getting hurt and getting a free. You booed Schulz when he nearly lost an eye. You giys booed Robbie Gray being stretchered off. You guys booed a point post cause a crows player ran into it and hurting himself. You guys boo JHF for no reason.

I'd rather it'd been Rachele.

Another reason to scrap the touched rule. Who gives a **** if the ball is touched. Control it and you get paid a mark. Kick it between the big sticks and it’s a goal. Scrap the touched rule. It’s too hard to umpire and makes for negative footy particularly in defence when a bloke like the double fister should just try and take the mark.
I e been saying it for awhile.

Touch rule goes. Touched mark, mark, etc

Stop nominating a ruck, if two player from one team go up it’s a goal.

If it hits a post and goes through goal or point. Bounces back into play play on.

Any contact over shoulder free kick.

Don’t get a clear disposal holding ball, irrelevant if knocked out in tackle. Make it easy

That was very uncharacteristic of Dan the first time I've seen him in rough conduct. He hasn't been himself lately he's cut a very low profile in the last 3 to 4 weeks, hardly noticed he's been on the park, where he normally imposes himself on games. He must have things on his mind.
Don't quite know what it is, but he will be in trouble for this.

just can’t see a world where he gets off, Rankine concussed going out on a stretcher

Only in the AFL can it be:

• legal to bump
• legal to bump the body
• but if you bump the body and the player gets concussed (similar mechanism to ice hockey where the sudden stop and shearing forces cause the brain to wobble), then because you ‘chose to bump’ and the player got concussed, you’re facing “MAXIMUM WEEKS!”

is any of the latter dot point actually in the rules? not really. but it’s how it looks and ‘community expectations’ now.

absolute bizarroworld.

if (when) Houston goes for this, the AFL must ban the bump. the grey area and ‘unwritten rules’ factor surrounding it is ridiculous. just take it off the books so everyone knows where they stand.

It’s a shame there isn’t a schism like the VFL/VFA era where the two codes of rules were about as similar as rugby league and union are to each other. Could trial all of these rules in a lower league and if they work bring them to the big league. Maybe it’s something one of the state leagues could consider, just like what they did in 2018 with the bigger goal square and 6-6-6 with an inconsequential match between two standalones who were out of the finals equation. https://www.afl.com.au/news/139569/vfl-teams-to-trial-new-rules-this-weekend
In fact it would be good to trial these rules at a lower level where there isn’t an incessant amount of cameras for score reviews and replays. Would remove the guesswork from some decisions and realistically, just about anything that removes a grey area and doesn’t leave things up to interpretation is almost always going to be a good idea.

David King is probably waterboarding Dan in the bottom of his basement as we speak…..8 weeks? Okay David.

Jimmy Webster got 7 for charging Jy Simpkin, leaping off the ground, and hitting him square in the head with a shoulder after Simpkin disposed of the ball.

Calling for 8 for a body-to-body hit with the player in possession is literal hysteria.

Port tax + 'we need to send a message' = 8 weeks
