WATCH ON PORT GUN

VICTORIAN clubs have a trade watch on Port Adelaide star Dan Houston, who is contracted to the Power for another three seasons.

Houston has strong personal ties in Victoria, where he was drafted from the Oakleigh Chargers in 2015, but is signed to the Power until the end of 2027.

The 27-year-old was last year named an All-Australian for the first time after a brilliant year with the Power and came third in the club's best and fairest.

He has played every game this season and last week gathered 34 disposals and nine rebound-50s against Gold Coast.

Melbourne has been linked among the clubs with interest in Houston, who clubs from Victoria have kept close tabs on through his career.

Houston has played 163 games for the Power and is in the club's leadership group. He signed an extension with the club at the start of 2022 which runs for three more seasons. – Callum Twomey

may be unpopular opinion, but Dan Houston is replaceable, we got so many half backs who dont defend and purely just attack like him. why not get a first round pick and go to the draft, get some young talent.

Absolute bullshit has been our most consistent player for years now. Top 5 pick or no deal, and even then I'd be inclined to say no.

Yeah why have a guaranteed elite player like Dan Houston when you could get a draft pick who might but probably won't turn out to be as good as Dan Houston.

Alright lets go through your rationale

Lachie Jones - manic man who plays maybe one good game every 7. Houston is a better ball user
Sinn - jury is still out making up their mind. Shows some stuff here and there still injury prone getting games but still speculative as to if he makes the grade
Farrell - probably in our top 3 kicks and plays shotgun alongside houston
Burton - regressed in his career the last few years
Bergman - playing as a third tall these days and actually defends so shouldnt be on this list
Williams - showed a bit last year but slow as a rats arse and probably gets the boot next year

so from all those options you would take that over a top 5 ball user in the comp. Someone who is a leader, a 2023 all australian player that still has 5 quality years in him. But lets go for a scrawny 18 year old instead.

Actually i forgot someone whos probably leading your thought process for houstos “replacement”. Tassie born-only on the list for trade bait for the new tassie team- putrid ball user and spud at SANFL level as a back let alone AFL level, Tom McCallum. Yes i see it now, dont worry im also part autistic trade houston keep hinkley

This is an interesting one….at 27 he’s right at peak value in the market and likely to only go down from here in value and maybe output also (ala Wines).

If you are in the window of contention it’s a hard no but if you are looking to accelerate a rebuild by adding first round picks in a hurry you look hard at this.

He’d command a first but not top 5, maybe a top 10.

Given our ridiculous trading over the past year it’s a hell of a u-turn to make. I can’t see us being able to stack first quickly enough to justify the dip in output of trading him.

No.

Rozee isn't the leader Port need.
Likewise Butters and JHF they simply don't have the maturity or experience we are seeing that on field this year.

Boak is finished.

So 1. He's a jet. 2. He's high IQ and we really are really struggling for on field leadership.

You just have to wonder why that article was written. Port would only be prepared to let him go for an established player (not a draft pick) and that means someone like Pickett or Shai Bolton (mates with SPP and Narkle).

We do have a good list of half backs. That list above didn't include Logan Evans, Rome and Jase Burgoyne or Montgomery. You could even put DBJ back to a more natural half back role. Maybe Perryman too.

We have shit small forwards- for most of the year we have played McEntee and DBJ there. Would you rather have Houston and McEntee or Sinn/Perryman and Pickett/Bolton?

Interesting because usually where there's smoke there's fire.
