I think that scallywag kernelT should be pushed off the plank before Cap'n Ross the Boss for trying to start a mutiny.

We are heading for the high seas on another adventure for that elusive second premiership, get aboard or get stuffed.

If you look at how we traded and drafted last year the plan clearly was based on improving our speed and outside game. Henry, Bonner, Hastie, Collard Wilson and Arie the intention was pretty clear and in the Pre Season games and against the Pies even against the Dons till the last quarter that plan seemed to have some merit. We were playing fast exciting footy.

The plan clearly was still to defend in depth but hit back with speed which looked good early but after 3 or 4 rounds when teams are starting to hit their straps and build their pressure our running game collapsed. It didnā€™t help that Henry got injured and Bonner it turned out couldnā€™t be trusted when the heat got turned up. Sincs starting slowly as a more mid than HB also hurt. We lost games lost confidence and the run just dried up. But merely the fact Bonner keeps playing week after week shows what the coaching team want the players to do, if they were intent on a pure contested scrap he wouldnā€™t be playing.

This idea that Ross wants to turn the game into a 2008 style flooding stalemate is clearly wrong. Every team defends with numbers folding back that is not a new Ross invention, it is how aggressively you take the game on once you have won back the ball and how effective you are at causing the opposition to turn it over in the first place.

All teams are pretty much playing the same style currently there is not wild differences in strategy just different levels of talent and different levels of consistency in delivering the plan. The Pies were doing things differently to every one else a couple of years ago, but we have all caught up now and can either do it as well or know how to defend it. Even Freo who were the last holdouts for the possession mark kick game have changed it up this year.

When teams are kicking down the line hacking the ball without a target out of defence or chipping backwards incessantly that is not a game plan that is the signs the game plan has broken down and the opposition have you scrambling, no one at any club is teaching that.

Cornes Lloyd and the others shock jocks know all this but they also know Ross was blamed for the uglification of footy back in 2005 - 2010 and it is easy to get clicks and likes by retreading that old storyline. Truth is this time Ross has a vastly inferior list than he had last time round and there is a no quick way to turn them into the Harlem Globetrotters, but he can teach them how to defend properly. So we are a poor team bottom 6 list but we can defend, not surprising we donā€™t score much but teams find it hard to score against us. We are trying to build a team that can run and counter punch from turnover but right now we make too many errors.

Excellent post.

One of the best posts I've read in a long time.

Spot on. Great analysis.

When we were injured we definitely tried to make the game into a dull slow ugly spectacle. We deserved criticism but there is some truth to what you say. He's not alone in making the game ugly.

So all you knob jockeys who say ross the boss is no good well tell me who should be the next coach yze was suppose to be the nest best what has he done buggar all

He's not getting sacked this year. but half way through next we'd want to be on an upward trajectory.

These guys are still the peloton of coaches in waiting. Obviously Yze is gone but it has all the main players. Josh Carr is the guy you hear a lot about as the next in line but Hansen and Mini are both pretty handy assistants and are well regarded.

Bring back Bevo !

Yze was only ever seen as a good assistant and a few at Richmond in the background were pretty amazed to see him get the coaching gig, and only a few with influence got him in there. Lyon is the retiree who had a lot of money thrown at him- he coaches like it's 2010

The ghost of Allan Jeans. Heā€™d scare the shit out of todayā€™s delicate petals.

He's inherited an injury plagued list and one with a lot of players past their prime. Hard to judge him yet. He might have been above us with more availability.

Good business. You donā€™t throw good money after bad.
I donā€™t think Ratts had what it takes to be a senior coach.

Yes, weā€™ve been pretty ordinary for a year, but Iā€™m not ready to throw the baby out with the bath water just yet.

NAS has improved. Windy, certainly.
Owens a little disappointing after a very promising start.
Pou, second year blues - it happens.
Wilson, well hasnā€™t really been around long enough but heā€™s looking pretty good. Started like a house on fire but has played less than half a season.
Caminiti, starting behind the 8 ball as a rookie, but I think heā€™s on the right track. Still very young. Second year only.

Iā€™d rather Ross than any one of the previous coaches weā€™ve hadā€¦since Ross.

.
Ross has also ā€˜played the mids and imo given youngsters more opportunity in the midfield and to develop in the twos.

Beautiful rant.
And I agree. He is a sanctimonious shmuck.
Used to watch every night - but not any more.
Gerard is a good guy.
To some supporters however, he does come across as a sanctimonious woke know all.
Too rational.

Less articulate, more passionate fans have a better grasp of the true heart of the game.

He's been made to look like a fool after saying he would rather watch Netflix than watch our game against Gold Coast.

Then we played a more entertaining Friday night game against Brisbane than his beloved Geelong served up last night.

Robbo isn't as eloquent, good word that, as Gerard but he will watch every footy game and never switch over to Netflix.

Actually reckon we might have been unfair on Ratts, worse list, worse staff and less support. Lyon has everything he asked for and more and hasn't managed to do anything more. Lethlean, Gags and Rath were a poor support staff.

We have him now so just have to try to make it work but can't let him be our Carlton Malthouse just because we are too proud to admit we were wrong.

I think we likely play finals next year and top 8 should be a minimum expectation. We are further advanced in the cycle than we were under Ratts.

no one was unfair.

the moment you have "player led" fitness programs, you knew he wasnt the right fit.

that was just crazy

Rome wasnā€™t built in a day.
Yea I know, weā€™ve been waiting for decades, but you can only judge Ross on 1 and a half seasons.

Agree with your last sentence.
