For the older generation... To me this season is like waiting to get the "cuts". You know you did wrong and you know you have to pay for it. You also know it's going to hurt but will be good for you in the long term.

I feel both good and bad about not only tonight but the season ahead. I trust they know what they're doing. Eat Em Alive!!

Nice comeback to end the half.. if not for an umpires goal would only be 2 in it.

Don't know whether to take this as a positive or not but we're only 3 goals down yet I think we have been pathetic. Not putting the head over the ball, no manning up, ruck work has been hideous, disposal useless. Get it together in the 2nd and perhaps we are a chance.

While not a brilliant night, I liked a lot of what I saw tonight.

i) Connors and his new role off half-back (just needs to work on his engine a bit more);
ii) Deledio taking another step forward to AFL elite status;
iii) The efforts of our debutants Nason & Martin;
iv) The efforts of Riewoldt as our lone KP forward option;
v) The return of Cotchin and Thompson, who were both serviceable.

Things I didn't like:

i) Our inaccuracy in front of goal (i.e. not taking our chances);
ii) Our accountability (at times), just saw Carlton getting some of their possessions far to easily;
ii) Shane Edwards, who I believe just isn't up to it at AFL level.
iv) Riewoldt as our #1 forward option. He is developing into a smart and effective forward, but I see him as more of a Rob Murphy-type player than a Buddy Franklin. I think we need to throw some cash at a premium forward from another club, which would allow Jack to become the 2nd tall forward option (and thus, the opposition's 2nd best defender); a position I feel he would thrive in.

Other than that....2010 won't be such a dire year :)

Daniel Jackson is a really impressive unit - build a team around him. Connors was good & a good first up from Martin.

Sorry Spud jjj - I thought Deledio, Cotchin, Newman & Tambling showed way to little in tonights game. I know they're all better than that.

Disagree about Cotchin, but Deledio, Newman and Tambling cut peripheral figures today. Not good enough from our senior players.

jaklaughing and deledio7. get these guys out of your new era. clearly delusional. jak with the 29 point win prediction. yeah nice one idiot. only 85 points off.

on a positive note, nason in my dt. relton could be very interesting too. i must admit i was a bit skeptical when i first heard he was ~24 yr old wookie but was pleasantly surprised.

lids didnt do enough and unfortunately couldnt lift when it mattered. your gonna have to hope he does a lot better in the near future. he's such a top kid when up but he'll never reach top status if he cant back it up week after week. 21 pos is allright, but needs greater output.

oh and jak i'm laughing at you lots right now

ii) Deledio taking another step forward to AFL elite status;

Not trolling but you cant be serious about this. I barely noticed him tonight. Goes missing way too often.

Lids has talent to burn but I'm sorry, he's got a long way to go to be considered elite.

Completely agree he was pathetic. People can have a go at me but it's not like I am baggin a kid. He is in his 6th season and should be dominating the big games. He went missing for most of the game and was extremely unaccountable when playing on Gibbs. He went missing in the big game last year and did the same tonight. Probably my most dissapointing aspect walking away from the game, that lids again failed to perform when the heat was on and then got alot of cheap possies in the last quater in the back half when it didn't count. He did the same thing last year in the openeing round, it should be when he shines not when he goes missing.

Tambling is not a wingman but a very good HBF and needs to play there.

Newman...barely sighted

Riewoldt needs to stop trying to take chest marks and use his hands. Tried hard though.

Thompson battled well. Needs to become a greater accumulator though.

Connors...looked the goods. Came out of the backline really well and generally used it well. Big positive.

Vickery looked to be much better than Simmonds contesting the ruck which was a major positive for mine.

Cotch needs some heavy game time, he was rotated heavily but always seemed stuffed.

Jacko tried hard and was serviceable as always.

Very dissapointed in some of the senior players who can't keep using youth as an excuse. It may be an overall team excuse but individually the likes of Lids and Bling need to take another step.

POSIIVES

Martin was half decent in his first game. Nason worked into the game well. Relton did a few good things.

GAME STYLE

We were sooo unaccountable. What is the point having a short side if we are not prepared to run. Carlton ran us off our feet tonight and made us look very unfit. So many free mids runnign through the middle and under no pressure delivering to there forwards. O'Halphin is a hack but showed what you can do with no midfield pressure form Richmond.

KICK OUTS FOR US AND FOR THEM

Our kickouts are horrible. We go short to a pocket and then long down the line even though we are playing no talls and sometimes even to space for a Carlton player in waiting. Also alot of the time they ignored options in the middle...royally F**** up our kcikouts! Need to use Newman and take some risk as going safe down the line is not paying off.

It seems when the ball is at the opposite end the opposite applys. it always comes racing out of our forward line. Guys stand 10m of players doing this zone bullshit. Seriously all they did was kick it to him then the player mans the mark and then the next bloke does the same...all of a sudden they are 20m past HB and heading forward.

At one stage i think it was in the last, the kick was a dud and Houlihan fumbled it from about 40m to 50m with no Richmond player comign near him, was absolutely pathetic.

I know my post may seem fairly pathetic however I want to point out a few reasons why. Senior players like Lids need to lead and become elite. Just because we have young blokes is no reason for not manning up and a lack of pressure. This is what Hardwick has preached all summer and i hope going forward we will see more! Forget all this don't let the jumper hit the floor crap, lets just try manning up first please fellas and we will see dramatic improvement. Also it seems alot of our kicking problems stem from lazy teamates not providing an option. I noted this in one of the praccy games this pre season, that no one was moving or leading. Then we have to bomb it loong, they need to continually move.

The final thing I have to say is we were way to short. Post must come in next week. By round 11 I hope to see Griffiths and Asbutry FF and CHF and Post and Gourdis FB AND CHB. This strucutre will make a huge difference. Alot of the time tonight when we were going forward guys like Hislop (only one just using as an example not trying to bag him) would put there hand up and ask for it long. YOU ARE 6ft plying on guys 6ft3 and 4...you need to use your pace and LEAD UP TO THE BALL CARRIER....UNder 12 stuff really.

Hopefully we see some accounability going forward and some height!

Was at the game tonight and must say I was impressed.

Better seeing a bunch of kids having a decent crack and getting defeated rather than a bunch of old bums getting owned.

Realistically Lids and Bling let us down, not enough ball! Carlton's midfield mauled us. We never had the ball...so without that how could we do anything?

What I did love was that the players skills were quite good when they did get the ball. We are not at the level of Carlton, most of our players are kids and aslong as they keep playing together then a few will develop into stars.

Nason impressed me, this kid is great. The young guns had a crack, while some of the older blokes did not step up.

I loved how head was over the ball and they made a contest for every play. We slipped away at the end but thats just stamina, not skill and lack of talent.

Lots of upside for us, we just need to get more of the ball. Lids and Bling did NOT do enough tonight.

Just finished watching Geelong Essendon, which has just confirmed to me that Carlton won't be a top 8 side this year. Given that they comfortably beat us. A long season is already looking even longer.:(

1. Dogs
2. Saints
3. Geelong
4. Pies
5. Lions
6. Crows
7. Hawks

There's 7 teams almost definate to fill the top 7 positions.

8th position will be between:

Dons
North
Blues
Port
Swans
Freo
West Coast

Wooden spoon will be between the tigers and the demons.

Lol. I didn't once claim we would win. I actually predicted we would lose. Nice way to back it up though....with nothing.
