Stanley will be a late out IMO.
That's what I'm thinking - and that they'd rather let Sav know now so he can be prepared for his debut and let family & friends etc know.

Having a player like Murdoch or Zuthrie as a late in when they know what preparation is required pre-match and their routines seems to make more sense

No way we'd play both him and Esava surely.
why not? we have done it in the past. need to remember that blicavs is playing key defender. So smith and stanley are the two rucks and hawkins and esava the two key forwards. Not necessarily the way i would go but we have gone this tall plenty of times before.

If Melbourne can't beat this Geelong side they're not the team a lot of people are expecting them to be, can't recall a weaker looking Cats team since, well I can't recall.

Now cue calls of "melting" simply for having a negative view. ;)
Certainly the weakest cats side i have seen for a while, but this Melbourne team isn't exactly an unbeatable force either.
It's the type of game where I could just as easy see us win easily as I can see us getting rolled easily.

Loving the new guys getting a crack. I'm excited to see what they can offer. Our depth should really be made up of these young guys i think Horlin-Smith, Murdoch, Thurlow ect shouldn't be getting games over such talent. I like it a lot.

Ratugolea, Fogarty, Kelly all look the goods to me.

I like the in's. I like the fact that Round 1 the MC are saying to players "you want in?. Earn it". Build that hunger!.

Sav has played well enough in the JLT games in the minutes he saw to get a shot. Hasn't impacted the scoreboard massively but we are crying out for another partner for Hawk, give the kid a go. Crameri not ready and Black was a free shot but in reality they have made the decision to get games into a kid and I'm all for that. Are we too tall with Stanley there?. Probably not as Blitz will play back and he will be 2nd ruck.

Fogarty missed the 2nd JLT with concussion but was solid in the VFL game. Showed enough JLT 1 to give him a go. Geelong needed that small, lock in forward last year and with him and Gregson there now, we should be better for it.

Kelly showed us he's ready and was pretty much an automatic selection going off the past history of mature aged players being drafted for a purpose.

I'd like to see them have the confidence to pick Constable as well. I love his ability and desire to get in and under and extract the pill. Has more than earnt a shot after his JLT games IMO. With Danger out, a replacement extractor would be ideal.

It's Round 1. Better to find out early whether they are up to it or not now. Plenty of other guys sitting in the wings that you already know what you are going to get so give the newbies a run.

I don't think the ins make the team necessarily weaker. Certainly makes them more unpredictable but not sold on weaker. I'm confident.

Go Cats.

Just reserving my spot for melts when it's confirmed that Stanley, Sav, Smith and Blicavs are all playing in the same team...on the MCG...where we've been humiliated for a lack of pace for the last 2 years.
The mentality on melting on this board needs to change and change fast.

Posts like this are becoming too frequent and frankly are pathetic for a number of reasons.

Not sure how far from full strength they are to be honest, but would need to be missing quite a bit of quality not to be able to get over the top of us on Sunday.

You'd think our skipper and that new bald guy, plus a few other senior players would need to play monster games to drag us over the line, not impossible but improbable IMO.

Needless to say, hope I have egg all over my face Sunday night.

Its not like either side had 22 small pressuring guys. There were basically inert units on both sides of the field - McIntosh, Ellis, Dow, Grigg, Silvagni were all effectively non-factors during the game. Having Stanley and Smith in the side by no means guarantees anything of the sort, and actually based on what I saw last night having multiple marking options i50 will be really valuable.

So far as Blicz goes I agree he's the best option for backup ruckwork. But I think he'll be too heavily required down back until Hendo is back.
Isn't this obvious? What are people on about saying Blitz 2nd ruck lol we need him in defence.

How about.
Backs:Bews Taylor Kolo
HB:Stewart Blits 2E
C:Kelly Duncan Parfitt
HF Gregson Hawkins Menengola
F Menzel Ratugolea Fogarty
R Smith Ablett Selwood
INT C Gutherie Parsons Murdoch O Conner.
PS I don't think Stanley will play.
Z.Guthrie over O'Connor and that's our side.

Wrong. Playing Stanley forces McDonald to him because Lever is too short. That means Lever goes to Hawkins and gives away 10kgs. Then we’ve got Esava and who do they put on him? Great selections by MC in my opinion.

Yeah don't agree at all. Stanley is a joke for a start so you lost me straight up there. Thanks for pointing out how wrong I am though.

Lever is the perfect match-up for Stanley, and a horrible match-up for Hawkins. McDonald will go to Hawkins.

Stanley has no game sense or defensive side to his game, the perfect player for Lever to play off and be the third up defender.
